Satanás se levantou contra Israel e incitou Davi a fazer um censo de Israel.

Davi disse a Joabe e aos líderes do povo: “Vão, contem Israel, desde Berseba até Dã; e tragam-me a resposta, para que eu saiba quantos são.”

Joabe disse: “Que o SENHOR multiplique o seu povo cem vezes mais do que são. Mas, meu senhor, o rei, não são todos eles servos do meu senhor? Por que o meu senhor exige essa coisa? Por que ele seria motivo de culpa para Israel?”

No entanto, a palavra do rei prevaleceu contra Joabe. Portanto, Joabe partiu e percorreu todo o Israel; depois, voltou a Jerusalém.

Joabe entregou a Davi a soma do censo do povo. Em todo o Israel havia um milhão e cem mil homens que empunhavam a espada; e em Judá havia quatrocentos e setenta mil homens que empunhavam a espada.

Mas ele não contou Levi e Benjamim entre eles, pois a palavra do rei era abominável para Joabe.

Deus se desagradou dessa coisa; portanto, ele feriu Israel.

Davi disse a Deus: “Pequei gravemente ao fazer essa coisa. Mas agora, eu te peço, remove a iniquidade do teu servo, pois agi com muita insensatez.”

O SENHOR falou a Gade, o vidente de Davi, dizendo:
- 10
“Vá e fale a Davi, dizendo: 'Assim diz o SENHOR: “Eu lhe ofereço três coisas. Escolha uma delas, para que eu a faça a você.”'”

Então Gade foi a Davi e lhe disse: “Assim diz o SENHOR: 'Faça a sua escolha:
- 12
ou três anos de fome; ou três meses sendo consumido diante dos seus adversários, enquanto a espada dos seus inimigos o alcança; ou então três dias da espada do SENHOR, isto é, peste na terra, e o anjo do SENHOR destruindo por todas as fronteiras de Israel. Agora, portanto, considere que resposta devo levar àquele que me enviou.'”

Davi disse a Gade: “Estou em grande angústia. Que eu caia, eu peço, nas mãos do SENHOR, pois as suas misericórdias são muito grandes. Não me deixe cair nas mãos dos homens.”

Então o SENHOR enviou uma peste sobre Israel, e caíram setenta mil homens de Israel.

Deus enviou um anjo a Jerusalém para destruí-la. Quando ele estava prestes a destruir, o SENHOR viu, e se arrependeu do desastre, e disse ao anjo destruidor: “Basta. Agora retire a sua mão.” O anjo do SENHOR estava em pé junto à eira de Ornã, o jebuseu.

Davi levantou os olhos e viu o anjo do SENHOR em pé entre a terra e o céu, tendo uma espada desembainhada em sua mão, estendida sobre Jerusalém. Então Davi e os líderes, vestidos de pano de saco, prostraram-se com o rosto em terra.

Davi disse a Deus: “Não fui eu quem mandou contar o povo? Fui eu mesmo quem pecou e agiu com muita maldade; mas estas ovelhas, o que elas fizeram? Por favor, que a tua mão, ó SENHOR meu Deus, seja contra mim e contra a casa do meu pai; mas não contra o teu povo, para que não seja atingido pela praga.”

Então o anjo do SENHOR ordenou a Gade que dissesse a Davi que Davi subisse e erguesse um altar ao SENHOR na eira de Ornã, o jebuseu.

Davi subiu conforme a palavra de Gade, que ele falou em nome do SENHOR.
- 20
Ornã se virou e viu o anjo; e os seus quatro filhos que estavam com ele se esconderam. Ora, Ornã estava debulhando trigo.
- 21
Quando Davi se aproximou de Ornã, Ornã olhou e viu Davi, e saiu da eira, e curvou-se diante de Davi com o rosto em terra.
- 22
Então Davi disse a Ornã: “Venda-me o lugar desta eira, para que eu construa nela um altar ao SENHOR. Você deve vendê-lo a mim pelo preço total, para que a praga pare de afligir o povo.”

Ornã disse a Davi: “Tome-o para você, e que o meu senhor, o rei, faça o que for bom aos seus olhos. Eis que dou os bois para os holocaustos, e os instrumentos de debulhar para servir de lenha, e o trigo para a oferta de cereais. Eu dou tudo isso.”

O rei Davi disse a Ornã: “Não, mas eu certamente o comprarei pelo preço total. Pois não tomarei o que é seu para o SENHOR, nem oferecerei um holocausto que não me custe nada.”

Então Davi deu a Ornã seiscentos siclos de ouro, por peso, pelo lugar.
- 26
Davi construiu ali um altar ao SENHOR, e ofereceu holocaustos e ofertas pacíficas, e invocou o SENHOR; e ele lhe respondeu do céu com fogo sobre o altar de holocaustos.

Então o SENHOR deu ordem ao anjo, e ele guardou a sua espada de volta na bainha.

Naquele tempo, quando Davi viu que o SENHOR lhe havia respondido na eira de Ornã, o jebuseu, então ele ofereceu sacrifícios ali.

Pois o tabernáculo do SENHOR, que Moisés fez no deserto, e o altar de holocaustos, estavam naquele tempo no lugar alto em Gibeão.

Mas Davi não podia ir diante dele para consultar a Deus, pois estava com medo por causa da espada do anjo do SENHOR.

Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to take a census of Israel.

David said to Joab and to the princes of the people, “Go, count Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring me word, that I may know how many there are.”
- 3
Joab said, “May the LORD make his people a hundred times as many as they are. But, my lord the king, aren’t they all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord require this thing? Why will he be a cause of guilt to Israel?”
- 4
Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Therefore Joab departed and went throughout all Israel, then came to Jerusalem.

Joab gave the sum of the census of the people to David. All those of Israel were one million one hundred thousand men who drew a sword; and in Judah were four hundred seventy thousand men who drew a sword.
- 6
But he didn’t count Levi and Benjamin among them, for the king’s word was abominable to Joab.
- 7
God was displeased with this thing; therefore he struck Israel.
- 8
David said to God, “I have sinned greatly, in that I have done this thing. But now put away, I beg you, the iniquity of your servant, for I have done very foolishly.”

The LORD spoke to Gad, David’s seer, saying,
- 10
“Go and speak to David, saying, ‘The LORD says, “I offer you three things. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.”’”
- 11
So Gad came to David and said to him, “The LORD says, ‘Take your choice:
- 12
either three years of famine; or three months to be consumed before your foes, while the sword of your enemies overtakes you; or else three days of the sword of the LORD, even pestilence in the land, and the LORD’s angel destroying throughout all the borders of Israel. Now therefore consider what answer I shall return to him who sent me.’”

David said to Gad, “I am in distress. Let me fall, I pray, into the LORD’s hand, for his mercies are very great. Don’t let me fall into man’s hand.”

So the LORD sent a pestilence on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell.
- 15
God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. As he was about to destroy, the LORD saw, and he relented of the disaster, and said to the destroying angel, “It is enough. Now withdraw your hand.” the LORD’s angel was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

David lifted up his eyes, and saw the LORD’s angel standing between earth and the sky, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell on their faces.

David said to God, “Isn’t it I who commanded the people to be counted? It is even I who have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O LORD my God, be against me and against my father’s house; but not against your people, that they should be plagued.”
- 18
Then the LORD’s angel commanded Gad to tell David that David should go up and raise an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spoke in the LORD’s name.

Ornan turned back and saw the angel; and his four sons who were with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.
- 21
As David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshing floor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.
- 22
Then David said to Ornan, “Sell me the place of this threshing floor, that I may build an altar to the LORD on it. You shall sell it to me for the full price, that the plague may be stopped from afflicting the people.”

Ornan said to David, “Take it for yourself, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes. Behold, I give the oxen for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meal offering. I give it all.”
- 24
King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will most certainly buy it for the full price. For I will not take that which is yours for the LORD, nor offer a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”
- 25
So David gave to Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the place.
- 26
David built an altar to the LORD there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called on the LORD; and he answered him from the sky by fire on the altar of burnt offering.

Then the LORD commanded the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath.
- 28
At that time, when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.
- 29
For the LORD’s tabernacle, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering, were at that time in the high place at Gibeon.
- 30
But David couldn’t go before it to inquire of God, for he was afraid because of the sword of the LORD’s angel.
