Now os filisteus reuniram seus exércitos para a batalha; e eles foram reunidos em Socoh, que pertence a Judah, e acampados entre Socoh e Azekah em Ephesdammim.

Saul e os homens de Israel estavam reunidos, e acampados no vale de Elá, e ordenaram a batalha contra os filisteus.

Os filisteus estavam na montanha de um lado, e Israel estava na montanha do outro lado: e havia um vale entre eles.

Um campeão fora do campo dos filisteus chamado Golias de Gate, cuja altura era de seis côvados e um vão se apagou.

Ele tinha um capacete de bronze na cabeça, e usava um casaco de correio; e o peso do casaco era de cinco mil shekels de bronze.

Ele tinha uma armadura de canela de bronze em suas pernas e um dardo de bronze entre seus ombros.

O bastão de sua lança era como uma viga de tecelão; e a cabeça de sua lança pesava seiscentos shekels de ferro. Seu portador de escudo foi antes dele.

Ele se levantou e gritou aos exércitos de Israel, e disse-lhes: “Por que vocês saíram para organizar sua batalha? Não sou eu um filisteu e vocês servos de Saul? Escolham um homem para vocês e deixem que ele desça até mim.

Se ele for capaz de lutar comigo e me matar, então seremos seus servos; mas se eu prevalecer contra ele e matá-lo, então vocês serão nossos servos e nos servirão”.

O filisteu disse: “Desafio os exércitos de Israel hoje! Dai-me um homem, para que possamos lutar juntos”!

Quando Saul e todo Israel ouviram essas palavras do filisteu, ficaram consternados e com muito medo.

Agora Davi era o filho daquele efrateu de Belém Judá, cujo nome era Jessé; e tinha oito filhos. O homem era um homem idoso nos dias de Saul.
- 13
Os três filhos mais velhos de Jessé tinham ido atrás de Saul para a batalha; e os nomes de seus três filhos que foram para a batalha eram Eliab, o primogênito, e ao seu lado Abinadabe, e o terceiro Shammah.

David era o mais jovem; e os três mais velhos seguiram Saul.

Agora Davi ia e voltava de Saul para alimentar as ovelhas de seu pai em Belém.

O filisteu se aproximou de manhã e à noite, e se apresentou durante quarenta dias.

Jesse disse a David, seu filho: “Agora tome para seus irmãos uma efa deste grão torrado e estes dez pães, e leve-os rapidamente ao acampamento para seus irmãos;
- 18
e traga estes dez queijos ao capitão dos mil; e veja como seus irmãos estão se saindo, e traga notícias”.

Now Saul, e eles, e todos os homens de Israel estavam no vale de Elá, lutando com os filisteus.

David levantou-se de manhã cedo e deixou as ovelhas com um tratador, pegou as provisões e foi, como Jesse lhe havia ordenado. Ele chegou ao lugar das carroças enquanto o exército que ia à luta gritava para a batalha.

Israel e os filisteus colocaram a batalha em ordem, exército contra exército.

David deixou sua bagagem na mão do guarda da bagagem e correu para o exército, e veio e cumprimentou seus irmãos.

Enquanto falava com eles, eis que o campeão, o filisteu de Gate, Golias por nome, saiu das fileiras dos filisteus e disse as mesmas palavras; e David os ouviu.

Todos os homens de Israel, quando viram o homem, fugiram dele e ficaram aterrorizados.

Os homens de Israel disseram: “Você já viu este homem que subiu? Ele certamente subiu para desafiar Israel. O rei dará grandes riquezas ao homem que o matar, e lhe dará sua filha, e tornará a casa de seu pai livre de impostos em Israel”.

David falou aos homens que o apoiaram, dizendo: “O que será feito ao homem que matar este filisteu e tirar a reprovação de Israel? Pois quem é este filisteu incircunciso, para que desafie os exércitos do Deus vivo?”

O povo lhe respondeu desta maneira, dizendo: “Assim será feito com o homem que o matar”.
- 28
Eliab, seu irmão mais velho, ouviu quando falou com os homens; e a raiva de Eliab queimou contra David, e ele disse: “Por que você desceu? Com quem você deixou aquelas poucas ovelhas no deserto? Eu conheço seu orgulho e o mal de seu coração; pois você desceu para poder ver a batalha”.

David disse: “O que eu fiz agora? Não há uma causa?”

Ele se afastou dele em direção a outro, e falou assim novamente; e as pessoas responderam-lhe novamente da mesma maneira.

Quando as palavras de David foram ouvidas, eles as ensaiaram diante de Saul; e ele mandou chamá-lo.
- 32
David disse a Saul: “Que o coração de nenhum homem falhe por causa dele”. Seu servo irá e lutará com este filisteu”.
- 33
Saul disse a David: “Você não pode ir contra este filisteu para lutar com ele; pois você é apenas um jovem, e ele um homem de guerra de sua juventude”.
- 34
David disse a Saul: “Seu servo estava guardando as ovelhas de seu pai; e quando um leão ou um urso chegou e tirou um cordeiro do rebanho,
- 35
eu saí atrás dele, bati nele e o salvei da boca. Quando ele se levantou contra mim, eu o peguei pela barba, bati nele, e o matei.
- 36
Seu criado bateu tanto no leão quanto no urso. Este filisteu incircunciso será como um deles, já que desafiou os exércitos do Deus vivo”.

David disse: “Yahweh, que me libertou da pata do leão e da pata do urso, me libertará da mão deste filisteu”. Saul disse a David: “Vá! Yahweh estará com você”.
- 38
Saul vestiu David com suas roupas. Ele colocou um capacete de bronze em sua cabeça, e o revestiu com um casaco de correio.
- 39
David amarrou sua espada em sua roupa e tentou se mover, pois não a havia testado. David disse a Saul: “Eu não posso ir com estas, pois não as testei”. Então David as tirou.
- 40
Ele pegou seu pessoal na mão e escolheu para si cinco pedras lisas do riacho e as colocou na bolsa de seu pastor que ele tinha na bolsa. Sua funda estava em sua mão; e ele se aproximou do filisteu.

O filisteu caminhou e se aproximou de David; e o homem que levava o escudo foi antes dele.
- 42
Quando o filisteu olhou em volta e viu David, ele o desprezou; pois ele não passava de um jovem, e corado, e tinha um rosto bonito.

O filisteu disse a David: “Sou eu um cão, que você vem até mim com paus? O filisteu amaldiçoou Davi por seus deuses.
- 44
O filisteu disse a Davi: “Vem a mim, e eu darei tua carne aos pássaros do céu e aos animais do campo”.
- 45
Então David disse ao filisteu: “Você vem a mim com uma espada, com uma lança e com um dardo; mas eu venho a você em nome de Javé dos exércitos, o Deus dos exércitos de Israel, a quem você desafiou.
- 46
Hoje, Javé o entregará em minhas mãos. Eu te baterei e tirarei sua cabeça de cima de você. Darei os cadáveres do exército dos filisteus hoje às aves do céu e aos animais selvagens da terra, para que toda a terra saiba que existe um Deus em Israel,
- 47
e que toda esta assembléia saiba que Javé não salva com espada e lança; pois a batalha é de Javé, e ele vos entregará em nossas mãos”.

Quando o filisteu se levantou, andou e se aproximou para encontrar David, David se apressou e correu em direção ao exército para encontrar o filisteu.
- 49
David colocou a mão na bolsa, pegou uma pedra e a jogou, e bateu na testa do filisteu. A pedra afundou em sua testa, e ele caiu com o rosto na terra.
- 50
Então David prevaleceu sobre o filisteu com uma funda e com uma pedra, e bateu no filisteu e o matou; mas não havia espada na mão de David.

Então David correu, ficou em pé sobre o filisteu, pegou sua espada, tirou-a de sua bainha, matou-o e cortou sua cabeça com ela. Quando os filisteus viram que seu campeão estava morto, eles fugiram.

Os homens de Israel e de Judá levantaram-se e gritaram, e perseguiram os filisteus até Gai e até os portões de Ekron. Os feridos dos filisteus caíram no caminho para Shaaraim, até mesmo para Gate e para Ekron.

As crianças de Israel voltaram de perseguir os filisteus, e saquearam seu acampamento.

David pegou a cabeça dos filisteus e a trouxe para Jerusalém, mas colocou sua armadura em sua tenda.

Quando Saul viu Davi sair contra o filisteu, disse a Abner, o capitão do exército: “Abner, de quem é filho este jovem? Abner disse: “Como sua alma vive, ó rei, eu não sei dizer”.

O rei disse: “Inquira de quem é o filho o jovem”!

Quando David voltou do massacre do filisteu, Abner o tomou e o trouxe diante de Saul com a cabeça do filisteu na mão.

Saul lhe disse: “De quem você é filho, seu jovem?” David respondeu: “Sou o filho de seu servo Jesse, o Bethlehemite”.

Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle; and they were gathered together at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah in Ephesdammim.

Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and encamped in the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.
- 3
The Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.

A champion out of the camp of the Philistines named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span went out.
- 5
He had a helmet of bronze on his head, and he wore a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze.
- 6
He had bronze shin armor on his legs and a bronze javelin between his shoulders.
- 7
The staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam; and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron. His shield bearer went before him.
- 8
He stood and cried to the armies of Israel, and said to them, “Why have you come out to set your battle in array? Am I not a Philistine, and you servants to Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me.

If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then will we be your servants; but if I prevail against him and kill him, then you will be our servants and serve us.”
- 10
The Philistine said, “I defy the armies of Israel today! Give me a man, that we may fight together!”
- 11
When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
- 12
Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem Judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons. The man was an elderly old man in the days of Saul.
- 13
The three oldest sons of Jesse had gone after Saul to the battle; and the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.
- 14
David was the youngest; and the three oldest followed Saul.
- 15
Now David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.

The Philistine came near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.
- 17
Jesse said to David his son, “Now take for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to your brothers;
- 18
and bring these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand; and see how your brothers are doing, and bring back news.”
- 19
Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.
- 20
David rose up early in the morning and left the sheep with a keeper, and took the provisions and went, as Jesse had commanded him. He came to the place of the wagons as the army which was going out to the fight shouted for the battle.
- 21
Israel and the Philistines put the battle in array, army against army.
- 22
David left his baggage in the hand of the keeper of the baggage and ran to the army, and came and greeted his brothers.
- 23
As he talked with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up out of the ranks of the Philistines, and said the same words; and David heard them.
- 24
All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were terrified.
- 25
The men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? He has surely come up to defy Israel. The king will give great riches to the man who kills him, and will give him his daughter, and will make his father’s house tax-free in Israel.”
- 26
David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done to the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
- 27
The people answered him in this way, saying, “So shall it be done to the man who kills him.”
- 28
Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger burned against David, and he said, “Why have you come down? With whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the evil of your heart; for you have come down that you might see the battle.”

David said, “What have I now done? Is there not a cause?”
- 30
He turned away from him toward another, and spoke like that again; and the people answered him again the same way.

When the words were heard which David spoke, they rehearsed them before Saul; and he sent for him.
- 32
David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”
- 33
Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.”
- 34
David said to Saul, “Your servant was keeping his father’s sheep; and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock,
- 35
I went out after him, struck him, and rescued it out of his mouth. When he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, struck him, and killed him.
- 36
Your servant struck both the lion and the bear. This uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, since he has defied the armies of the living God.”
- 37
David said, “The LORD, who delivered me out of the paw of the lion and out of the paw of the bear, will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “Go! The LORD will be with you.”

Saul dressed David with his clothing. He put a helmet of bronze on his head, and he clad him with a coat of mail.

David strapped his sword on his clothing and he tried to move, for he had not tested it. David said to Saul, “I can’t go with these, for I have not tested them.” Then David took them off.

He took his staff in his hand, and chose for himself five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag which he had. His sling was in his hand; and he came near to the Philistine.
- 41
The Philistine walked and came near to David; and the man who bore the shield went before him.
- 42
When the Philistine looked around and saw David, he disdained him; for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and had a good looking face.
- 43
The Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” The Philistine cursed David by his gods.
- 44
The Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the sky and to the animals of the field.”
- 45
Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin; but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
- 46
Today, the LORD will deliver you into my hand. I will strike you and take your head from off you. I will give the dead bodies of the army of the Philistines today to the birds of the sky and to the wild animals of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel,
- 47
and that all this assembly may know that the LORD doesn’t save with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give you into our hand.”

When the Philistine arose, and walked and came near to meet David, David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.
- 49
David put his hand in his bag, took a stone and slung it, and struck the Philistine in his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth.
- 50
So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him; but there was no sword in David’s hand.
- 51
Then David ran, stood over the Philistine, took his sword, drew it out of its sheath, killed him, and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.

The men of Israel and of Judah arose and shouted, and pursued the Philistines as far as Gai and to the gates of Ekron. The wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath and to Ekron.

The children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they plundered their camp.
- 54
David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent.

When Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the captain of the army, “Abner, whose son is this youth?” Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I can’t tell.”
- 56
The king said, “Inquire whose son the young man is!”
- 57
As David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.

Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, you young man?” David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”
