No décimo oitavo ano do rei Jeroboão, Abijah começou a reinar sobre Judá.
- 2
Ele reinou três anos em Jerusalém. O nome de sua mãe era Micaiah, filha de Uriel de Gibeah. Havia uma guerra entre Abias e Jeroboão.

Abias juntou-se à batalha com um exército de valentes homens de guerra, mesmo quatrocentos mil homens escolhidos; e Jeroboão ordenou a batalha contra ele com oitocentos mil homens escolhidos, que eram poderosos homens de valor.

Abijah levantou-se no Monte Zemaraim, que fica na região montanhosa de Efraim, e disse: “Escutem-me, Jeroboão e todo Israel”:

Ought você não sabe que Javé, o Deus de Israel, deu o reino sobre Israel a Davi para sempre, até mesmo a ele e a seus filhos por um pacto de sal?

No entanto, Jeroboão, filho de Nebat, o servo de Salomão, filho de Davi, levantou-se e se rebelou contra seu senhor.

Homens inúteis se reuniram a ele, companheiros perversos que se fortaleceram contra Roboão, filho de Salomão, quando Roboão era jovem e terno de coração, e não podia resistir a eles.

“Agora você pretende resistir ao reino de Yahweh na mão dos filhos de David. Você é uma grande multidão, e os bezerros de ouro que Jeroboão lhe fez para os deuses estão com você”.

Vocês não expulsaram os sacerdotes de Iavé, os filhos de Aarão, e os levitas, e fizeram sacerdotes para vocês mesmos, de acordo com os caminhos dos povos de outras terras? Quem vem para se consagrar com um touro jovem e sete carneiros pode ser um sacerdote daqueles que não são deuses.

“Mas quanto a nós, Yahweh é nosso Deus e não o abandonamos. Temos sacerdotes servindo a Javé, os filhos de Aarão, e os levitas em seu trabalho.

Eles queimam para Iavé todas as manhãs e todas as noites holocaustos e incenso doce. Eles também ordenam o pão de exposição sobre a mesa pura, e cuidam do suporte da lâmpada de ouro com suas lâmpadas, para queimar todas as noites; pois nós mantemos a instrução de Javé, nosso Deus, mas o abandonaram.

Eis que Deus está conosco à nossa frente, e seus sacerdotes com as trombetas de alarme para fazer soar um alarme contra vocês. Filhos de Israel, não lutem contra Javé, o Deus de vossos pais; pois vós não prosperareis”.

Mas Jeroboam provocou uma emboscada atrás deles; assim eles estavam diante de Judá, e a emboscada estava atrás deles.

Quando Judah olhou para trás, eis que a batalha estava diante e atrás deles; e eles gritaram a Javé, e os sacerdotes soaram com as trombetas.

Então os homens de Judá deram um grito. Enquanto os homens de Judá gritavam, Deus golpeou Jeroboão e todo Israel diante de Abias e Judá.

Os filhos de Israel fugiram diante de Judá, e Deus os entregou em suas mãos.
- 17
Abias e seu povo os mataram com um grande massacre, então quinhentos mil homens escolhidos de Israel caíram mortos.

Thus os filhos de Israel foram abatidos naquela época, e os filhos de Judá prevaleceram, porque confiaram em Javé, o Deus de seus pais.

Abijah perseguiu Jeroboão e lhe tirou cidades: Bethel com suas aldeias, Jeshanah com suas aldeias, e Efron com suas aldeias.

Jeroboam não recuperou forças novamente nos dias de Abijah. Yahweh o atingiu, e ele morreu.
- 21
Mas Abijah cresceu poderoso e tomou para si catorze esposas, e se tornou o pai de vinte e dois filhos e dezesseis filhas.

In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah began to reign over Judah.
- 2
He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Micaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. There was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.

Abijah joined battle with an army of valiant men of war, even four hundred thousand chosen men; and Jeroboam set the battle in array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, who were mighty men of valor.

Abijah stood up on Mount Zemaraim, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, and said, “Hear me, Jeroboam and all Israel:

Ought you not to know that the LORD, the God of Israel, gave the kingdom over Israel to David forever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?
- 6
Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up, and rebelled against his lord.
- 7
Worthless men were gathered to him, wicked fellows who strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tender hearted, and could not withstand them.

“Now you intend to withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David. You are a great multitude, and the golden calves which Jeroboam made you for gods are with you.
- 9
Haven’t you driven out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made priests for yourselves according to the ways of the peoples of other lands? Whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams may be a priest of those who are no gods.

“But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him. We have priests serving the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites in their work.

They burn to the LORD every morning and every evening burnt offerings and sweet incense. They also set the show bread in order on the pure table, and care for the gold lamp stand with its lamps, to burn every evening; for we keep the instruction of the LORD our God, but you have forsaken him.
- 12
Behold, God is with us at our head, and his priests with the trumpets of alarm to sound an alarm against you. Children of Israel, don’t fight against the LORD, the God of your fathers; for you will not prosper.”

But Jeroboam caused an ambush to come about behind them; so they were before Judah, and the ambush was behind them.

When Judah looked back, behold, the battle was before and behind them; and they cried to the LORD, and the priests sounded with the trumpets.
- 15
Then the men of Judah gave a shout. As the men of Judah shouted, God struck Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.
- 16
The children of Israel fled before Judah, and God delivered them into their hand.
- 17
Abijah and his people killed them with a great slaughter, so five hundred thousand chosen men of Israel fell down slain.

Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied on the LORD, the God of their fathers.

Abijah pursued Jeroboam, and took cities from him: Bethel with its villages, Jeshanah with its villages, and Ephron with its villages.
- 20
Jeroboam didn’t recover strength again in the days of Abijah. The LORD struck him, and he died.
- 21
But Abijah grew mighty and took for himself fourteen wives, and became the father of twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.
