Josias tinha oito anos de idade quando começou a reinar, e reinou trinta e um anos em Jerusalém.
- 2
Ele fez o que era reto aos olhos do SENHOR, e andou nos caminhos de Davi, seu pai, e não se desviou nem para a direita nem para a esquerda.

Pois no oitavo ano do seu reinado, sendo ainda jovem, ele começou a buscar o Deus de Davi, seu pai; e no décimo segundo ano, começou a purificar Judá e Jerusalém dos altos, dos postes de Aserá, das imagens esculpidas e das imagens de fundição.

Derrubaram os altares dos baalins na sua presença; e ele despedaçou os altares de incenso que estavam no alto, acima deles. Ele quebrou os postes de Aserá, as imagens esculpidas e as imagens de fundição em pedaços, reduziu-os a pó, e o espalhou sobre as sepulturas daqueles que lhes haviam sacrificado.

Ele queimou os ossos dos sacerdotes sobre os seus altares, e purificou Judá e Jerusalém.

Ele fez isso nas cidades de Manassés, Efraim e Simeão, até Naftali, por todas as suas ruínas ao redor.

Ele derrubou os altares, reduziu a pó os postes de Aserá e as imagens esculpidas, e despedaçou todos os altares de incenso por toda a terra de Israel; então voltou para Jerusalém.

No décimo oitavo ano do seu reinado, quando já havia purificado a terra e a casa, ele enviou Safã, filho de Azalias, Maaseias, o governador da cidade, e Joá, filho de Joacaz, o cronista, para repararem a casa do SENHOR, seu Deus.

Eles foram a Hilquias, o sumo sacerdote, e entregaram o dinheiro que havia sido trazido para a casa de Deus, o qual os levitas, guardas da soleira, haviam recolhido das mãos de Manassés, de Efraim, de todo o remanescente de Israel, de todo o Judá e Benjamim, e dos habitantes de Jerusalém.

Eles o entregaram nas mãos dos trabalhadores que tinham a supervisão da casa do SENHOR; e os trabalhadores que trabalhavam na casa do SENHOR o deram para consertar e reparar a casa.

Eles o deram aos carpinteiros e aos construtores para comprarem pedras lavradas e madeira para os encaixes, e para fazerem vigas para os edifícios que os reis de Judá haviam destruído.

Os homens fizeram o trabalho fielmente. Seus supervisores eram Jaate e Obadias, levitas, dos filhos de Merari; e Zacarias e Mesulão, dos filhos dos coatitas, para dirigirem a obra; e outros dos levitas, que eram todos habilidosos com instrumentos musicais.

Eles também estavam sobre os carregadores de cargas, e dirigiam todos os que faziam o trabalho em cada tipo de serviço. Dos levitas, havia escribas, oficiais e guardas das portas.

Quando tiraram o dinheiro que havia sido trazido para a casa do SENHOR, o sacerdote Hilquias encontrou o livro da lei do SENHOR dada por meio de Moisés.

Hilquias disse a Safã, o escriba: “Encontrei o livro da lei na casa do SENHOR.” Então Hilquias entregou o livro a Safã.
- 16
Safã levou o livro ao rei, e também lhe trouxe um relatório, dizendo: “Tudo o que foi confiado aos seus servos, eles estão fazendo.
- 17
Eles esvaziaram o dinheiro que foi encontrado na casa do SENHOR, e o entregaram nas mãos dos supervisores e nas mãos dos trabalhadores.”

Safã, o escriba, informou ao rei, dizendo: “O sacerdote Hilquias me entregou um livro.” E Safã leu o livro para o rei.

Quando o rei ouviu as palavras da lei, ele rasgou as suas roupas.
- 20
O rei ordenou a Hilquias, a Aicão, filho de Safã, a Abdom, filho de Mica, a Safã, o escriba, e a Asaías, servo do rei, dizendo:
- 21
“Vão e consultem o SENHOR por mim, e pelos que restaram em Israel e em Judá, a respeito das palavras do livro que foi encontrado; pois grande é a ira do SENHOR que foi derramada sobre nós, porque nossos pais não guardaram a palavra do SENHOR, para fazerem conforme tudo o que está escrito neste livro.”

Então Hilquias e aqueles a quem o rei havia ordenado foram à profetisa Hulda, mulher de Salum, filho de Tocate, filho de Hasra, o guarda do guarda-roupa (ela morava em Jerusalém, no segundo distrito), e falaram com ela a esse respeito.

Ela lhes disse: “Assim diz o SENHOR, o Deus de Israel: 'Digam ao homem que os enviou a mim:

“Assim diz o SENHOR: 'Eis que trarei o mal sobre este lugar e sobre os seus habitantes, a saber, todas as maldições que estão escritas no livro que leram diante do rei de Judá.
- 25
Porque me abandonaram e queimaram incenso a outros deuses, para me provocarem à ira com todas as obras das suas mãos, portanto a minha ira se derramará sobre este lugar, e não se apagará.'”

Mas ao rei de Judá, que os enviou para consultar o SENHOR, vocês lhe dirão o seguinte: 'Assim diz o SENHOR, o Deus de Israel: “A respeito das palavras que você ouviu,

porque o seu coração foi sensível, e você se humilhou diante de Deus quando ouviu as suas palavras contra este lugar e contra os seus habitantes, e se humilhou diante de mim, rasgou as suas roupas e chorou diante de mim, eu também o ouvi”, diz o SENHOR.

“Eis que eu o reunirei aos seus pais, e você será recolhido à sua sepultura em paz. Os seus olhos não verão todo o mal que trarei sobre este lugar e sobre os seus habitantes.”'” Eles levaram esta mensagem de volta ao rei.

Então o rei mandou reunir todos os anciãos de Judá e de Jerusalém.

O rei subiu à casa do SENHOR com todos os homens de Judá e os habitantes de Jerusalém — os sacerdotes, os levitas e todo o povo, desde o maior até o menor — e leu em voz alta diante deles todas as palavras do livro da aliança que havia sido encontrado na casa do SENHOR.

O rei se pôs em pé no seu lugar e fez uma aliança diante do SENHOR, de andar após o SENHOR, e de guardar os seus mandamentos, os seus testemunhos e os seus estatutos de todo o seu coração e de toda a sua alma, para cumprir as palavras da aliança que estavam escritas neste livro.

Ele fez com que todos os que se encontravam em Jerusalém e em Benjamim se pusessem de pé. Os habitantes de Jerusalém fizeram conforme a aliança de Deus, o Deus de seus pais.

Josias removeu todas as abominações de todas as terras que pertenciam aos filhos de Israel, e fez com que todos os que se encontravam em Israel servissem, sim, que servissem ao SENHOR, seu Deus. Todos os seus dias eles não se desviaram de seguir o SENHOR, o Deus de seus pais.

Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem.

He did that which was right in the LORD’s eyes, and walked in the ways of David his father, and didn’t turn away to the right hand or to the left.

For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father; and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, the Asherah poles, the engraved images, and the molten images.

They broke down the altars of the Baals in his presence; and he cut down the incense altars that were on high above them. He broke the Asherah poles, the engraved images, and the molten images in pieces, made dust of them, and scattered it on the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.

He burned the bones of the priests on their altars, and purged Judah and Jerusalem.

He did this in the cities of Manasseh, Ephraim, and Simeon, even to Naphtali, around in their ruins.

He broke down the altars, beat the Asherah poles and the engraved images into powder, and cut down all the incense altars throughout all the land of Israel, then returned to Jerusalem.

Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder to repair the house of the LORD his God.

They came to Hilkiah the high priest and delivered the money that was brought into God’s house, which the Levites, the keepers of the threshold, had gathered from the hands of Manasseh, Ephraim, of all the remnant of Israel, of all Judah and Benjamin, and of the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

They delivered it into the hands of the workmen who had the oversight of the LORD’s house; and the workmen who labored in the LORD’s house gave it to mend and repair the house.

They gave it to the carpenters and to the builders to buy cut stone and timber for couplings, and to make beams for the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed.
- 12
The men did the work faithfully. Their overseers were Jahath and Obadiah the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to give direction; and others of the Levites, who were all skillful with musical instruments.

Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and directed all who did the work in every kind of service. Of the Levites, there were scribes, officials, and gatekeepers.

When they brought out the money that was brought into the LORD’s house, Hilkiah the priest found the book of the LORD’s law given by Moses.
- 15
Hilkiah answered Shaphan the scribe, “I have found the book of the law in the LORD’s house.” So Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan.
- 16
Shaphan carried the book to the king, and moreover brought back word to the king, saying, “All that was committed to your servants, they are doing.
- 17
They have emptied out the money that was found in the LORD’s house, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers and into the hand of the workmen.”

Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, “Hilkiah the priest has delivered me a book.” Shaphan read from it to the king.

When the king had heard the words of the law, he tore his clothes.
- 20
The king commanded Hilkiah, Ahikam the son of Shaphan, Abdon the son of Micah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king’s servant, saying,
- 21
“Go inquire of the LORD for me, and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found; for great is the LORD’s wrath that is poured out on us, because our fathers have not kept the LORD’s word, to do according to all that is written in this book.”

So Hilkiah and those whom the king had commanded went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe (now she lived in Jerusalem in the second quarter), and they spoke to her to that effect.

She said to them, “The LORD, the God of Israel says: ‘Tell the man who sent you to me,
- 24
“The LORD says, ‘Behold, I will bring evil on this place and on its inhabitants, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah.
- 25
Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands, therefore my wrath is poured out on this place, and it will not be quenched.’”’

But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, you shall tell him this, ‘The LORD, the God of Israel says: “About the words which you have heard,
- 27
because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before God when you heard his words against this place and against its inhabitants, and have humbled yourself before me, and have torn your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard you,” says the LORD.

“Behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes won’t see all the evil that I will bring on this place and on its inhabitants.”’” They brought back this message to the king.

Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.
- 30
The king went up to the LORD’s house with all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem—the priests, the Levites, and all the people, both great and small—and he read in their hearing all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the LORD’s house.

The king stood in his place and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments, his testimonies, and his statutes with all his heart and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant that were written in this book.

He caused all who were found in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand. The inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.

Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that belonged to the children of Israel, and made all who were found in Israel to serve, even to serve the LORD their God. All his days they didn’t depart from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.
