David contou as pessoas que estavam com ele, e colocou capitães de milhares e capitães de centenas sobre eles.

David enviou o povo, uma terceira parte sob a mão de Joab, e uma terceira parte sob a mão de Abishai, filho de Zeruiah, irmão de Joab, e uma terceira parte sob a mão de Ittai, o Gittita. O rei disse ao povo: “Eu também certamente sairei com você”.

Mas o povo disse: “Vocês não sairão, pois se fugirmos, eles não se importarão conosco, nem se metade de nós morrer, eles se importarão conosco. Mas vocês valem dez mil de nós. Portanto, agora é melhor que você esteja pronto para nos ajudar a sair da cidade”.

O rei lhes disse: “Farei o que lhe parecer melhor”. O rei ficou ao lado do portão, e todo o povo saiu às centenas e aos milhares.

O rei comandou Joab e Abishai e Ittai, dizendo: “Lidem gentilmente, por mim, com o jovem Absalom”. Todo o povo ouviu quando o rei ordenou a todos os capitães a respeito de Absalom.

Então o povo foi para o campo contra Israel; e a batalha foi na floresta de Efraim.
- 7
O povo de Israel foi atingido lá diante dos servos de Davi, e houve uma grande matança naquele dia de vinte mil homens.
- 8
Pois a batalha estava ali espalhada pela superfície de todo o país, e a floresta devorou mais pessoas naquele dia do que a espada devorou.
- 9
Absalom conheceu por acaso os criados de David. Absalom estava montado em sua mula, e a mula foi para debaixo dos ramos grossos de um grande carvalho; e sua cabeça pegou o carvalho, e ele estava pendurado entre o céu e a terra; e a mula que estava debaixo dele continuou.

Um certo homem o viu, disse a Joab, e disse: “Eis que eu vi Absalom pendurado num carvalho”.

Joab disse ao homem que lhe disse: “Eis que você o viu, e por que você não o atingiu lá no chão? Eu lhe teria dado dez moedas de prata e uma faixa”.

O homem disse a Joab: “Embora eu devesse receber mil moedas de prata em minha mão, eu ainda não estenderia minha mão contra o filho do rei; pois em nossa audiência o rei ordenou a você e Abishai e Ittai, dizendo: 'Cuidado para que ninguém toque no jovem Absalom'.

Caso contrário, se eu tivesse agido falsamente contra sua vida (e não há matéria escondida do rei), então você mesmo teria se colocado contra mim”.

Então Joab disse: “Eu não vou esperar assim com você”. Ele pegou três dardos na mão e os empurrou através do coração de Absalom enquanto ainda estava vivo no meio do carvalho.

Dez jovens que carregaram a armadura de Joab cercaram e atingiram Absalom, e o mataram.
- 16
Joab tocou a trombeta, e o povo voltou de perseguir Israel; pois Joab reteve o povo.
- 17
Eles pegaram Absalom e o lançaram em um grande poço na floresta, e levantaram sobre ele um monte de pedras muito grande. Então todo Israel fugiu, cada um para sua própria tenda.

Agora Absalom em sua vida havia tomado e criado para si o pilar que está no vale do rei, pois ele disse: “Não tenho nenhum filho para manter meu nome na memória”. Ele chamou o pilar com o seu próprio nome. É chamado de monumento de Absalom, até os dias de hoje.

Então Ahimaaz, filho de Zadok, disse: “Deixe-me agora correr e levar a notícia do rei, como Javé o vingou de seus inimigos”.

Joab disse-lhe: “Você não deve ser o portador de notícias hoje, mas deve levar notícias em outro dia”. Mas hoje você não deve levar notícias, porque o filho do rei está morto”.

Então Joab disse ao Cushite: “Vá, diga ao rei o que você viu”! O Cushite se curvou diante de Joab, e correu.

Então Ahimaaz, o filho de Zadok, disse mais uma vez a Joab: “Mas, aconteça o que acontecer, por favor, deixe-me também correr atrás do Cushite”. Joab disse: “Por que você quer correr, meu filho, já que não terá nenhuma recompensa pela notícia?”

“Mas aconteça o que acontecer”, disse ele, “eu vou correr”. Ele disse a ele: “Corra!”. Então Ahimaaz correu pelo caminho da Planície, e ultrapassou o Cushite.

Agora David estava sentado entre os dois portões; e o vigia subiu até o teto do portão para o muro, levantou os olhos e olhou, e eis que um homem corria sozinho.

O sentinela gritou e disse ao rei. O rei disse: “Se ele está sozinho, há novidades em sua boca”. Ele se aproximou cada vez mais.

O vigilante viu outro homem correndo; e o vigilante chamou o porteiro e disse: “Eis um homem correndo sozinho”! O rei disse: “Ele também traz novidades”.

O vigia disse: “Acho que a corrida do primeiro é como a corrida de Ahimaaz, o filho de Zadok”. O rei disse: “Ele é um bom homem, e vem com boas notícias”.

Ahimaaz chamou, e disse ao rei: “Tudo está bem”. Ele se curvou diante do rei com o rosto na terra, e disse: “Bendito seja Javé, vosso Deus, que entregou os homens que levantaram a mão contra meu senhor, o rei”!

O rei disse: “Está tudo bem com o jovem Absalom”? Ahimaaz respondeu: “Quando Joab enviou o servo do rei, até mesmo eu seu servo, vi um grande tumulto, mas não sei o que era”.

O rei disse: “Venha e fique aqui”. Ele veio e ficou parado.
- 31
Eis que veio o Cushite. O Cushite disse: “Boas notícias para meu senhor, o rei, pois Javé vingou-vos hoje de todos aqueles que se levantaram contra vós”.
- 32
O rei disse ao Cushite: “Está tudo bem com o jovem Absalom”? O Cushite respondeu: “Que os inimigos de meu senhor, o rei, e todos os que se levantam contra vós para fazer-vos mal, sejam como aquele jovem é”.

The o rei ficou muito emocionado, e subiu para a sala por cima do portão e chorou. Ao ir, ele disse: “Meu filho Absalom! Meu filho, meu filho Absalom! Quem me dera ter morrido ao invés de você, Absalom, meu filho, meu filho”!

David counted the people who were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them.

David sent the people out, a third part under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. The king said to the people, “I will also surely go out with you myself.”

But the people said, “You shall not go out, for if we flee away, they will not care for us, neither if half of us die, will they care for us. But you are worth ten thousand of us. Therefore now it is better that you are ready to help us out of the city.”

The king said to them, “I will do what seems best to you.” The king stood beside the gate, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands.

The king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, “Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom.” All the people heard when the king commanded all the captains concerning Absalom.

So the people went out into the field against Israel; and the battle was in the forest of Ephraim.
- 7
The people of Israel were struck there before David’s servants, and there was a great slaughter there that day of twenty thousand men.

For the battle was there spread over the surface of all the country, and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.

Absalom happened to meet David’s servants. Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak; and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was hanging between the sky and earth; and the mule that was under him went on.

A certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, “Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak.”
- 11
Joab said to the man who told him, “Behold, you saw it, and why didn’t you strike him there to the ground? I would have given you ten pieces of silver and a sash.”
- 12
The man said to Joab, “Though I should receive a thousand pieces of silver in my hand, I still wouldn’t stretch out my hand against the king’s son; for in our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, saying, ‘Beware that no one touch the young man Absalom.’
- 13
Otherwise, if I had dealt falsely against his life (and there is no matter hidden from the king), then you yourself would have set yourself against me.”
- 14
Then Joab said, “I’m not going to wait like this with you.” He took three darts in his hand and thrust them through Absalom’s heart while he was still alive in the middle of the oak.
- 15
Ten young men who bore Joab’s armor surrounded and struck Absalom, and killed him.
- 16
Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel; for Joab held the people back.

They took Absalom and cast him into a great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones. Then all Israel fled, each to his own tent.
- 18
Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself the pillar which is in the king’s valley, for he said, “I have no son to keep my name in memory.” He called the pillar after his own name. It is called Absalom’s monument, to this day.

Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said, “Let me now run and carry the king news, how the LORD has avenged him of his enemies.”
- 20
Joab said to him, “You must not be the bearer of news today, but you must carry news another day. But today you must carry no news, because the king’s son is dead.”
- 21
Then Joab said to the Cushite, “Go, tell the king what you have seen!” The Cushite bowed himself to Joab, and ran.
- 22
Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said yet again to Joab, “But come what may, please let me also run after the Cushite.” Joab said, “Why do you want to run, my son, since you will have no reward for the news?”
- 23
“But come what may,” he said, “I will run.” He said to him, “Run!” Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the Plain, and outran the Cushite.

Now David was sitting between the two gates; and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate to the wall, and lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, a man running alone.
- 25
The watchman shouted and told the king. The king said, “If he is alone, there is news in his mouth.” He came closer and closer.
- 26
The watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called to the gatekeeper and said, “Behold, a man running alone!” The king said, “He also brings news.”
- 27
The watchman said, “I think the running of the first one is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok.” The king said, “He is a good man, and comes with good news.”
- 28
Ahimaaz called, and said to the king, “All is well.” He bowed himself before the king with his face to the earth, and said, “Blessed is the LORD your God, who has delivered up the men who lifted up their hand against my lord the king!”

The king said, “Is it well with the young man Absalom?” Ahimaaz answered, “When Joab sent the king’s servant, even me your servant, I saw a great tumult, but I don’t know what it was.”

The king said, “Come and stand here.” He came and stood still.
- 31
Behold, the Cushite came. The Cushite said, “Good news for my lord the king, for the LORD has avenged you today of all those who rose up against you.”
- 32
The king said to the Cushite, “Is it well with the young man Absalom?” The Cushite answered, “May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up against you to do you harm, be as that young man is.”
- 33
The king was much moved, and went up to the room over the gate and wept. As he went, he said, “My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! I wish I had died instead of you, Absalom, my son, my son!”
