Novamente a raiva de Javé queimou contra Israel, e ele moveu Davi contra eles, dizendo: “Vá, conte Israel e Judá”.

O rei disse a Joab, o capitão do exército, que estava com ele: “Agora vai e vem por todas as tribos de Israel, desde Dan até Berseba, e conta o povo, para que eu possa conhecer a soma do povo”.

Joab disse ao rei: “Agora que Yahweh seu Deus acrescente ao povo, por muitos que sejam, cem vezes; e que os olhos de meu senhor, o rei, o vejam. Mas por que meu senhor, o rei, se deleita com isto”?

Notwithstanding, a palavra do rei prevaleceu contra Joab e contra os capitães do exército. Joab e os capitães do exército saíram da presença do rei para contar o povo de Israel.

Passaram o Jordão e acamparam em Aroer, no lado direito da cidade que está no meio do vale de Gad, e para Jazer;
- 6
depois vieram para Gilead e para a terra de Tahtim Hodshi; e vieram para Dan Jaan e em torno de Sidon,
- 7
e vieram para a fortaleza de Tiro, e para todas as cidades dos hivitas e dos cananeus; e saíram para o sul de Judá, em Beersheba.

Assim, ao final de nove meses e vinte dias, quando eles tinham ido e voltado por toda a terra, eles chegaram a Jerusalém.

Joabe entregou ao rei a soma da contagem do povo; e havia em Israel oitocentos mil homens valentes que desembainharam a espada, e os homens de Judá eram quinhentos mil homens.

O coração de David bateu nele depois que ele contou o povo. David disse a Javé: “Eu pequei muito naquilo que fiz. Mas agora, Javé, ponha de lado, eu lhe imploro, a iniqüidade de seu servo; pois fiz muito loucamente”.

Quando David levantou-se pela manhã, a palavra de Javé veio ao profeta Gad, o vidente de David, dizendo:

“ Vá e fale com David, 'Javé diz: “Eu lhe ofereço três coisas. Escolha uma delas, para que eu possa fazer isso com você”””.
- 13
Então Gad veio até David e disse a ele, dizendo: “Será que sete anos de fome virão até você em sua terra? Ou você vai fugir três meses antes de seus inimigos enquanto eles o perseguem? Ou haverá três dias de pestilência em sua terra? Agora responda, e considere que resposta devo devolver àquele que me enviou”.

David disse a Gad: “Estou em apuros. Vamos cair agora nas mãos de Javé, pois suas misericórdias são grandes. Que eu não caia na mão do homem”.

Então Yahweh enviou uma pestilência sobre Israel desde a manhã até a hora marcada; e setenta mil homens morreram do povo de Dan até mesmo para Beersheba.

Quando o anjo estendeu sua mão em direção a Jerusalém para destruí-la, Javé se arrependeu do desastre, e disse ao anjo que destruiu o povo: “Basta”. Agora retire sua mão”. O anjo de Javé estava junto à eira de Araunah, o jebusita.

David falou com Yahweh quando viu o anjo que atingiu o povo, e disse: “Eis que pequei, e fiz perversamente; mas estas ovelhas, o que fizeram elas? Por favor, que sua mão esteja contra mim, e contra a casa de meu pai”.

Gad veio naquele dia a David e lhe disse: “Suba, construa um altar para Yahweh na eira de Araunah, o jebusita”.

David subiu de acordo com o ditado de Gad, como Yahweh ordenou.
- 20
Araunah olhou para fora, e viu o rei e seus servos se aproximando dele. Então Araunah saiu e se curvou diante do rei com o rosto no chão.
- 21
Araunah disse: “Por que meu senhor, o rei, veio ao seu servo”? David disse: “Para comprar sua eira, para construir um altar para Yahweh, que a praga possa ser impedida de afligir o povo”.

Araunah disse a David: “Que meu senhor, o rei, aceite e ofereça o que lhe parece bom”. Eis o gado para o holocausto, e as debulhadoras e os jugos dos bois para a madeira”.
- 23
Tudo isto, ó rei, o Araúna dá ao rei”. Araúna disse ao rei: “Que Yahweh, teu Deus, te aceite”.

O rei disse a Araunah: “Não, mas certamente vou comprá-lo de você por um preço. Não oferecerei holocaustos a Javé, meu Deus, que não me custaram nada”. Então David comprou a eira e os bois por cinqüenta siclos de prata.

David construiu ali um altar para Iavé e ofereceu holocaustos e ofertas de paz. Então Javé foi tratado pela terra, e a peste foi removida de Israel.

Again the LORD’s anger burned against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, “Go, count Israel and Judah.”

The king said to Joab the captain of the army, who was with him, “Now go back and forth through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beersheba, and count the people, that I may know the sum of the people.”

Joab said to the king, “Now may the LORD your God add to the people, however many they may be, one hundred times; and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king delight in this thing?”

Notwithstanding, the king’s word prevailed against Joab and against the captains of the army. Joab and the captains of the army went out from the presence of the king to count the people of Israel.

They passed over the Jordan and encamped in Aroer, on the right side of the city that is in the middle of the valley of Gad, and to Jazer;
- 6
then they came to Gilead and to the land of Tahtim Hodshi; and they came to Dan Jaan and around to Sidon,
- 7
and came to the stronghold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites and of the Canaanites; and they went out to the south of Judah, at Beersheba.

So when they had gone back and forth through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

Joab gave up the sum of the counting of the people to the king; and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men who drew the sword, and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

David’s heart struck him after he had counted the people. David said to the LORD, “I have sinned greatly in that which I have done. But now, the LORD, put away, I beg you, the iniquity of your servant; for I have done very foolishly.”

When David rose up in the morning, the LORD’s word came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying,
- 12
“Go and speak to David, ‘The LORD says, “I offer you three things. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.”’”
- 13
So Gad came to David, and told him, saying, “Shall seven years of famine come to you in your land? Or will you flee three months before your foes while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days’ pestilence in your land? Now answer, and consider what answer I shall return to him who sent me.”

David said to Gad, “I am in distress. Let us fall now into the LORD’s hand, for his mercies are great. Let me not fall into man’s hand.”
- 15
So the LORD sent a pestilence on Israel from the morning even to the appointed time; and seventy thousand men died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba.

When the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD relented of the disaster, and said to the angel who destroyed the people, “It is enough. Now withdraw your hand.” The LORD’s angel was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

David spoke to the LORD when he saw the angel who struck the people, and said, “Behold, I have sinned, and I have done perversely; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand be against me, and against my father’s house.”

Gad came that day to David and said to him, “Go up, build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.”

David went up according to the saying of Gad, as the LORD commanded.

Araunah looked out, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him. Then Araunah went out and bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.
- 21
Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” David said, “To buy your threshing floor, to build an altar to the LORD, that the plague may be stopped from afflicting the people.”

Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take and offer up what seems good to him. Behold, the cattle for the burnt offering, and the threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for the wood.

All this, O king, does Araunah give to the king.” Araunah said to the king, “May the LORD your God accept you.”
- 24
The king said to Araunah, “No, but I will most certainly buy it from you for a price. I will not offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God which cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

David built an altar to the LORD there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was entreated for the land, and the plague was removed from Israel.
