Então voltei e vi todas as opressões que são feitas sob o sol: e eis que as lágrimas dos oprimidos não tinham consolador; e do lado de seus opressores havia poder; mas eles não tinham consolador.

Portanto, elogiei mais os mortos que há muito estão mortos do que os vivos que ainda estão vivos.

Sim, melhor que ambos é aquele que ainda não morreu, que ainda não viu o trabalho maligno que é feito sob o sol.

Então eu vi todo o trabalho e realização que é a inveja do próximo de um homem. Isto também é vaidade e um esforço após o vento.

O tolo dobra as mãos e se arruína.

É melhor um punhado, com tranqüilidade, do que dois punhados com mão de obra e perseguindo o vento.

Há um que está sozinho, e não tem nem filho nem irmão. Não há fim para todo o seu trabalho, nem seus olhos estão satisfeitos com a riqueza. “Para quem, então, eu trabalho e privo minha alma de prazer?” Isto também é vaidade. Sim, é um negócio miserável.

Dois são melhores do que um, porque têm uma boa recompensa por seu trabalho.

Pois se eles caírem, aquele levantará seu companheiro; mas ai daquele que está sozinho quando ele cai, e não tem outro para levantá-lo.

Again, se dois se deitam juntos, então eles têm calor; mas como se pode manter o calor sozinho?

Se um homem prevalecer contra um que está sozinho, dois lhe resistirão; e uma corda tripla não se quebra rapidamente.

É melhor um jovem pobre e sábio do que um rei velho e tolo que não sabe mais como receber admoestações.

Pois fora da prisão ele saiu para ser rei; sim, mesmo em seu reino ele nasceu pobre.

Vi todos os vivos que caminham sob o sol, que estavam com a juventude, o outro, que o sucedeu.

Não havia fim para todo o povo, mesmo para aqueles sobre os quais ele era - ainda assim aqueles que vêm depois não se alegrarão com ele. Certamente isto também é vaidade e uma perseguição ao vento.

Then I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold, the tears of those who were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.

Therefore I praised the dead who have been long dead more than the living who are yet alive.

Yes, better than them both is him who has not yet been, who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

Then I saw all the labor and achievement that is the envy of a man’s neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

The fool folds his hands together and ruins himself.

Better is a handful, with quietness, than two handfuls with labor and chasing after wind.

Then I returned and saw vanity under the sun.

There is one who is alone, and he has neither son nor brother. There is no end to all of his labor, neither are his eyes satisfied with wealth. “For whom then do I labor and deprive my soul of enjoyment?” This also is vanity. Yes, it is a miserable business.

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor.
- 10
For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

Again, if two lie together, then they have warmth; but how can one keep warm alone?

If a man prevails against one who is alone, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Better is a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king who doesn’t know how to receive admonition any more.
- 14
For out of prison he came out to be king; yes, even in his kingdom he was born poor.
- 15
I saw all the living who walk under the sun, that they were with the youth, the other, who succeeded him.
- 16
There was no end of all the people, even of all them over whom he was—yet those who come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a chasing after wind.
