Depois destas coisas, o rei Assuero promoveu Haman, filho de Hammedatha, o Agagita, e o promoveu e colocou seu assento acima de todos os príncipes que estavam com ele.

Todos os servos do rei que estavam no portão do rei se curvaram e prestaram homenagem a Haman, pois o rei tinha assim ordenado a seu respeito. Mas Mordecai não se curvou nem prestou homenagem a ele.

Então os servos do rei que estavam no portão do rei disseram a Mordecai: “Por que você desobedece ao mandamento do rei?”.

Agora, quando eles falavam diariamente com ele, e ele não os ouvia, eles diziam a Haman, para ver se a razão de Mordecai permaneceria de pé; pois ele lhes havia dito que era judeu.

Quando Haman viu que Mordecai não se curvou nem lhe prestou homenagem, Haman estava cheio de raiva.

Mas ele desprezou a idéia de impor as mãos somente a Mordecai, pois eles haviam dado a conhecer ao povo de Mordecai. Portanto, Haman procurou destruir todos os judeus que estavam em todo o reino de Assuero, até mesmo o povo de Mordecai.

No primeiro mês, que é o mês de Nisan, no décimo segundo ano do rei Assuero, eles lançaram Pur, ou seja, o lote, antes de Haman de dia para dia, e de mês para mês, e escolheram o décimo segundo mês, que é o mês Adar.

Haman disse ao rei Assuero: “Há um certo povo espalhado no exterior e disperso entre os povos de todas as províncias de seu reino, e suas leis são diferentes das de outros povos. Eles não cumprem as leis do rei”. Portanto, não é para o lucro do rei permitir que elas permaneçam.

Se agradar ao rei, que se escreva que sejam destruídos; e eu pagarei dez mil talentos de prata nas mãos daqueles que estão encarregados dos negócios do rei, para trazê-los para os tesouros do rei”.

O rei tirou seu anel de sua mão e o deu a Haman, filho de Hammedatha, o agagita, o inimigo dos judeus.

O rei disse a Haman: “A prata é dada a você, o povo também, para fazer com eles o que lhe parece bom”.

Então os escribas do rei foram chamados no primeiro mês, no décimo terceiro dia do mês; e tudo o que Haman ordenou foi escrito aos governadores locais do rei, e aos governadores que estavam sobre cada província, e aos príncipes de cada povo, a cada província de acordo com sua escrita, e a cada povo em sua língua. Foi escrito em nome do rei Assuero, e foi selado com o anel do rei.

Cartas foram enviadas por correios a todas as províncias do rei, para destruir, matar e fazer perecer todos os judeus, jovens e velhos, crianças e mulheres, em um dia, mesmo no décimo terceiro dia do décimo segundo mês, que é o mês de Adar, e para saquear seus bens.

Uma cópia da carta, que o decreto deveria ser entregue em cada província, foi publicada para todos os povos, para que estivessem prontos contra aquele dia.

Os correios saíram apressados por ordem do rei, e o decreto foi entregue na cidadela de Susa. O rei e Haman sentaram-se para beber; mas a cidade de Susa estava perplexa.

After these things King Ahasuerus promoted Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him, and set his seat above all the princes who were with him.

All the king’s servants who were in the king’s gate bowed down and paid homage to Haman, for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai didn’t bow down or pay him homage.

Then the king’s servants who were in the king’s gate said to Mordecai, “Why do you disobey the king’s commandment?”

Now it came to pass, when they spoke daily to him, and he didn’t listen to them, that they told Haman, to see whether Mordecai’s reason would stand; for he had told them that he was a Jew.

When Haman saw that Mordecai didn’t bow down nor pay him homage, Haman was full of wrath.
- 6
But he scorned the thought of laying hands on Mordecai alone, for they had made known to him Mordecai’s people. Therefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews who were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even Mordecai’s people.

In the first month, which is the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day to day, and from month to month, and chose the twelfth month, which is the month Adar.

Haman said to King Ahasuerus, “There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom, and their laws are different from other people’s. They don’t keep the king’s laws. Therefore it is not for the king’s profit to allow them to remain.

If it pleases the king, let it be written that they be destroyed; and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver into the hands of those who are in charge of the king’s business, to bring it into the king’s treasuries.”

The king took his ring from his hand, and gave it to Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the Jews’ enemy.

The king said to Haman, “The silver is given to you, the people also, to do with them as it seems good to you.”
- 12
Then the king’s scribes were called in on the first month, on the thirteenth day of the month; and all that Haman commanded was written to the king’s local governors, and to the governors who were over every province, and to the princes of every people, to every province according to its writing, and to every people in their language. It was written in the name of King Ahasuerus, and it was sealed with the king’s ring.

Letters were sent by couriers into all the king’s provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to plunder their possessions.

A copy of the letter, that the decree should be given out in every province, was published to all the peoples, that they should be ready against that day.
- 15
The couriers went out in haste by the king’s commandment, and the decree was given out in the citadel of Susa. The king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city of Susa was perplexed.
