Gênesis 16
Dez anos em Canaã e ainda sem filho, Sarai força uma solução humana: dá sua serva egípcia Agar a Abrão. Agar concebe e despreza a senhora; Sarai culpa Abrão, trata Agar com dureza, e ela foge para o deserto. Junto a uma fonte no caminho de Sur, o anjo do SENHOR a encontra, manda-a voltar e lhe promete um filho, Ismael, nome que diz que Deus ouviu a sua aflição.

Ora, Sarai, mulher de Abrão, não lhe dava filhos. Ela tinha uma serva, uma egípcia, cujo nome era Agar.

Sarai disse a Abrão: “Veja agora, o SENHOR me impediu de ter filhos. Por favor, deite-se com a minha serva. Pode ser que eu obtenha filhos por meio dela.” Abrão deu ouvidos à voz de Sarai.

Sarai, mulher de Abrão, tomou Agar, a egípcia, sua serva, depois que Abrão havia vivido dez anos na terra de Canaã, e a deu a Abrão, seu marido, para ser sua mulher.

Ele se deitou com Agar, e ela concebeu. Quando ela viu que havia concebido, passou a desprezar a sua senhora.

Sarai disse a Abrão: “A culpa por esta injustiça é sua. Eu entreguei minha serva em seus braços, e quando ela viu que havia concebido, ela me desprezou. Que o SENHOR julgue entre mim e você.”

Mas Abrão disse a Sarai: “Eis que a sua serva está em suas mãos. Faça com ela o que for bom aos seus olhos.” Sarai a tratou duramente, e ela fugiu da sua presença.

O anjo do SENHOR a encontrou junto a uma fonte de água no deserto, junto à fonte no caminho de Sur.

Ele disse: “Agar, serva de Sarai, de onde você veio? E para onde você vai?” Ela disse: “Estou fugindo da presença de minha senhora Sarai.”

O anjo do SENHOR disse a ela: “Volte para a sua senhora e sujeite-se sob as mãos dela.”
- 10
O anjo do SENHOR disse a ela: “Multiplicarei grandemente a sua descendência, de modo que não poderá ser contada, de tão numerosa.”
- 11
O anjo do SENHOR disse a ela: “Eis que você está grávida, e dará à luz um filho. Você lhe dará o nome de Ismael, porque o SENHOR ouviu a sua aflição.
- 12
Ele será como um jumento selvagem entre os homens. A mão dele será contra todos os homens, e a mão de todos os homens será contra ele. Ele viverá em oposição a todos os seus irmãos.”

Ela invocou o nome do SENHOR que falava com ela: “Você é um Deus que vê”, pois ela disse: “Acaso eu ainda continuo viva depois de vê-lo?”

Portanto, o poço foi chamado de Beer-Laai-Roi. Eis que ele está entre Cades e Berede.

Agar deu à luz um filho a Abrão. Abrão deu o nome de Ismael ao seu filho, que Agar deu à luz.

Abrão tinha oitenta e seis anos de idade quando Agar deu à luz Ismael a Abrão.

Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, bore him no children. She had a servant, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.

Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the LORD has restrained me from bearing. Please go in to my servant. It may be that I will obtain children by her.” Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife.

He went in to Hagar, and she conceived. When she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

Sarai said to Abram, “This wrong is your fault. I gave my servant into your bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, she despised me. May the LORD judge between me and you.”

But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your maid is in your hand. Do to her whatever is good in your eyes.” Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her face.

The LORD’s angel found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain on the way to Shur.

He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s servant, where did you come from? Where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sarai.”

The LORD’s angel said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hands.”
- 10
The LORD’s angel said to her, “I will greatly multiply your offspring, that they will not be counted for multitude.”

The LORD’s angel said to her, “Behold, you are with child, and will bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, because the LORD has heard your affliction.
- 12
He will be like a wild donkey among men. His hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him. He will live opposed to all of his brothers.”

She called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees,” for she said, “Have I even stayed alive after seeing him?”
- 14
Therefore the well was called Beer Lahai Roi. Behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

Hagar bore a son for Abram. Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
- 16
Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
O Deus que vê uma serva em fuga
Agar, serva estrangeira e sem posição, é a primeira pessoa em Gênesis a receber uma promessa de descendência própria e a primeira a dar nome a Deus: "Tu és o Deus que vê" (v.13). O poço se chama Beer-Laai-Roi.
A palavra do anjo sobre o menino não é sentimental: anuncia um homem "montês" em conflito com os irmãos. Abrão tem oitenta e seis anos quando Ismael nasce, filho real, mas não o herdeiro prometido.
