Gênesis 25
Este capítulo encerra uma geração e abre outra. Abraão se casa com Quetura e tem mais filhos, mas dá tudo a Isaque antes de morrer aos 175 anos, sepultado por Isaque e Ismael em Macpela. Listam-se os doze príncipes de Ismael e, em seguida, sua morte. O centro do capítulo é o nascimento de Esaú e Jacó: gêmeos que lutam no ventre, com o oráculo de que o mais velho servirá ao mais novo.

Abraão tomou outra mulher, e o nome dela era Quetura.

Ela lhe deu à luz Zinrã, Jocsã, Medã, Midiã, Isbaque e Sua.

Jocsã gerou a Seba e a Dedã. Os filhos de Dedã foram os assurins, os letusins e os leumins.

Os filhos de Midiã foram Efa, Efer, Enoque, Abida e Elda. Todos estes foram filhos de Quetura.

Abraão deu tudo o que tinha a Isaque,

mas Abraão deu presentes aos filhos das concubinas de Abraão. Enquanto ele ainda vivia, ele os enviou para longe de Isaque, seu filho, para o leste, para a terra do oriente.

Estes são os dias dos anos da vida de Abraão que ele viveu: cento e setenta e cinco anos.

Abraão entregou o seu espírito e morreu em boa velhice, um homem idoso e cheio de anos, e foi reunido ao seu povo.

Isaque e Ismael, seus filhos, o sepultaram na caverna de Macpela, no campo de Efrom, filho de Zoar, o heteu, que fica perto de Manre,

o campo que Abraão comprou dos filhos de Hete. Abraão foi sepultado lá com Sara, sua mulher.

Após a morte de Abraão, Deus abençoou Isaque, seu filho. Isaque habitava perto de Beer-Laai-Roi.

Ora, esta é a história das gerações de Ismael, filho de Abraão, que Hagar, a egípcia, serva de Sara, deu à luz a Abraão.

Estes são os nomes dos filhos de Ismael, pelos seus nomes, de acordo com a ordem de seu nascimento: o primogênito de Ismael, Nebaiote, depois Quedar, Adbeel, Mibsão,

Misma, Dumá, Massá,

Hadade, Tema, Jetur, Nafis e Quedemá.

Estes são os filhos de Ismael, e estes são os seus nomes, por suas vilas e por seus acampamentos: doze príncipes, segundo as suas nações.

Estes são os anos da vida de Ismael: cento e trinta e sete anos. Ele entregou o seu espírito e morreu, e foi reunido ao seu povo.

Eles habitaram desde Havilá até Sur, que fica diante do Egito, indo em direção à Assíria. Ele habitou diante de todos os seus parentes.

Esta é a história das gerações de Isaque, filho de Abraão. Abraão gerou a Isaque.

Isaque tinha quarenta anos quando tomou Rebeca, filha de Betuel, o arameu de Padã-Arã, irmã de Labão, o arameu, para ser sua mulher.

Isaque suplicou ao SENHOR por sua mulher, porque ela era estéril. O SENHOR ouviu a sua súplica, e Rebeca, sua mulher, concebeu.

As crianças lutavam uma com a outra dentro dela. Ela disse: “Se é assim, por que continuo vivendo?” Então ela foi consultar o SENHOR.

O SENHOR lhe disse: “Duas nações estão em seu ventre. Dois povos serão separados do seu corpo. Um povo será mais forte do que o outro povo. O mais velho servirá ao mais novo.”

Quando se cumpriram os dias para ela dar à luz, eis que havia gêmeos em seu ventre.

O primeiro saiu todo vermelho, como uma veste de pelos. Eles o chamaram de Esaú.

Depois disso, saiu o seu irmão, e a sua mão segurava o calcanhar de Esaú. Ele foi chamado de Jacó. Isaque tinha sessenta anos quando ela os deu à luz.

Os meninos cresceram. Esaú era um caçador habilidoso, um homem do campo. Jacó era um homem pacato, que habitava em tendas.

Ora, Isaque amava Esaú, porque comia da sua caça. Rebeca, porém, amava Jacó.

Jacó fez um ensopado. Esaú chegou do campo, e estava faminto.
- 30
Esaú disse a Jacó: “Por favor, dê-me de comer um pouco desse ensopado vermelho, pois estou faminto.” Por isso o seu nome foi chamado Edom.

Jacó disse: “Primeiro, venda-me o seu direito de primogenitura.”
- 32
Esaú disse: “Eis que estou a ponto de morrer. De que me serve o direito de primogenitura?”

Jacó disse: “Jure-me primeiro.” Ele lhe jurou. Ele vendeu o seu direito de primogenitura a Jacó.

Jacó deu a Esaú pão e ensopado de lentilhas. Ele comeu e bebeu, levantou-se e seguiu o seu caminho. Assim, Esaú desprezou o seu direito de primogenitura.

Abraham took another wife, and her name was Keturah.

She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.

Jokshan became the father of Sheba, and Dedan. The sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim.

The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.

Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac,
- 6
but Abraham gave gifts to the sons of Abraham’s concubines. While he still lived, he sent them away from Isaac his son, eastward, to the east country.

These are the days of the years of Abraham’s life which he lived: one hundred seventy-five years.

Abraham gave up his spirit, and died at a good old age, an old man, and full of years, and was gathered to his people.

Isaac and Ishmael, his sons, buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron, the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is near Mamre,

the field which Abraham purchased from the children of Heth. Abraham was buried there with Sarah, his wife.

After the death of Abraham, God blessed Isaac, his son. Isaac lived by Beer Lahai Roi.

Now this is the history of the generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s servant, bore to Abraham.

These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to the order of their birth: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebaioth, then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,

Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.

These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their villages, and by their encampments: twelve princes, according to their nations.

These are the years of the life of Ishmael: one hundred thirty-seven years. He gave up his spirit and died, and was gathered to his people.

They lived from Havilah to Shur that is before Egypt, as you go toward Assyria. He lived opposite all his relatives.

This is the history of the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son. Abraham became the father of Isaac.

Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Paddan Aram, the sister of Laban the Syrian, to be his wife.

Isaac entreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren. The LORD was entreated by him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
- 22
The children struggled together within her. She said, “If it is like this, why do I live?” She went to inquire of the LORD.
- 23
The LORD said to her, “Two nations are in your womb. Two peoples will be separated from your body. The one people will be stronger than the other people. The elder will serve the younger.”

When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
- 25
The first came out red all over, like a hairy garment. They named him Esau.
- 26
After that, his brother came out, and his hand had hold on Esau’s heel. He was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.

The boys grew. Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field. Jacob was a quiet man, living in tents.

Now Isaac loved Esau, because he ate his venison. Rebekah loved Jacob.

Jacob boiled stew. Esau came in from the field, and he was famished.
- 30
Esau said to Jacob, “Please feed me with some of that red stew, for I am famished.” Therefore his name was called Edom.
- 31
Jacob said, “First, sell me your birthright.”
- 32
Esau said, “Behold, I am about to die. What good is the birthright to me?”
- 33
Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” He swore to him. He sold his birthright to Jacob.
- 34
Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew. He ate and drank, rose up, and went his way. So Esau despised his birthright.
Uma primogenitura vendida por um guisado
Os irmãos são opostos desde o início: Esaú caçador do campo, Jacó homem quieto das tendas, e os pais divididos na preferência. Quando Esaú chega faminto, Jacó troca um prato de guisado vermelho de lentilhas pela primogenitura. Esaú a jura entregar, e o texto diz sem rodeios que a desprezou; por isso foi chamado Edom.
