Uma genealogia percorre dez gerações de Adão até Noé, e cada entrada segue o mesmo compasso: viveu tantos anos, gerou um filho, viveu mais anos e teve outros filhos, e morreu. O repetido "e morreu" é a batida constante sob a sentença de mortalidade do capítulo 3. Preste atenção às duas quebras do ritmo. De Enoque nunca se diz que morreu: "andou com Deus, e ele não foi encontrado, pois Deus o levou" (v.24). E o capítulo termina preparando o próximo: o nascimento de Noé.

All the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty-nine years, then he died.

Lamech lived one hundred eighty-two years, then became the father of a son.

He named him Noah, saying, “This one will comfort us in our work and in the toil of our hands, caused by the ground which the LORD has cursed.”

Lamech lived after he became the father of Noah five hundred ninety-five years, and became the father of other sons and daughters.

All the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy-seven years, then he died.

Noah was five hundred years old, then Noah became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Uma lista que aponta para frente
As vidas são longuíssimas - Matusalém chega a 969 anos (v.27), a maior - e ainda assim o veredito "e morreu" fecha quase todos os nomes, exceto o de Enoque, cuja partida é diferente.
Lameque chama seu filho de Noé esperando que ele "nos console em nosso trabalho" por causa da terra amaldiçoada (v.29), ligando esta lista ao capítulo 3 e ao dilúvio que vem. O capítulo encerra com Noé gerando Sem, Cam e Jafé.
