A palavra que veio a Jeremias da parte do SENHOR, quando o rei Zedequias lhe enviou Pasur, filho de Malquias, e o sacerdote Sofonias, filho de Maaseias, dizendo:

“Por favor, consulte o SENHOR por nós; pois Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia, está fazendo guerra contra nós. Talvez o SENHOR aja em nosso favor segundo todas as suas obras maravilhosas, para que ele se retire de nós.”

Então Jeremias lhes disse: “Digam a Zedequias:
- 4
‘Assim diz o SENHOR, o Deus de Israel: “Eis que farei voltar as armas de guerra que estão nas mãos de vocês, com as quais vocês lutam contra o rei da Babilônia e contra os caldeus que os cercam do lado de fora das muralhas; e eu as ajuntarei no meio desta cidade.

Eu mesmo lutarei contra vocês com mão estendida e com braço forte, sim, com ira, com furor e com grande indignação.

Ferirei os habitantes desta cidade, tanto homens quanto animais. Eles morrerão de uma grande peste.

Depois disso”, diz o SENHOR, “entregarei Zedequias, rei de Judá, seus servos e o povo, sim, aqueles que restarem nesta cidade da peste, da espada e da fome, nas mãos de Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia, e nas mãos de seus inimigos, e nas mãos daqueles que procuram tirar-lhes a vida. Ele os ferirá ao fio da espada. Ele não os poupará, não terá piedade, nem terá misericórdia.”’

“Você dirá a este povo: ‘Assim diz o SENHOR: “Eis que ponho diante de vocês o caminho da vida e o caminho da morte.

Aquele que permanecer nesta cidade morrerá pela espada, pela fome e pela peste, mas aquele que sair e passar para os caldeus que os cercam, esse viverá, e escapará com a sua vida.

Pois fixei o meu rosto contra esta cidade para o mal, e não para o bem”, diz o SENHOR. “Ela será entregue nas mãos do rei da Babilônia, e ele a queimará com fogo.”’

“A respeito da casa do rei de Judá, ouçam a palavra do SENHOR:
- 12
Casa de Davi, assim diz o SENHOR: ‘Pratiquem a justiça pela manhã, e livrem aquele que é roubado das mãos do opressor, para que a minha ira não saia como fogo, e queime de modo que ninguém possa apagá-la, por causa da maldade das suas ações.
- 13
Eis que sou contra você, ó habitante do vale, e da rocha da planície’, diz o SENHOR. ‘Vocês que dizem: “Quem desceria contra nós?” ou: “Quem entraria em nossas moradas?”

Eu os castigarei segundo o fruto das suas ações’, diz o SENHOR; ‘e acenderei um fogo em sua floresta, e ele devorará tudo o que está ao seu redor.’”

The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, when King Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur the son of Malchijah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, saying,

“Please inquire of the LORD for us; for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon makes war against us. Perhaps the LORD will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may withdraw from us.”

Then Jeremiah said to them, “Tell Zedekiah:
- 4
‘The LORD, the God of Israel says, “Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, with which you fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans who besiege you outside the walls; and I will gather them into the middle of this city.

I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, in wrath, and in great indignation.
- 6
I will strike the inhabitants of this city, both man and animal. They will die of a great pestilence.
- 7
Afterward,” says the LORD, “I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah, his servants, and the people, even those who are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their life. He will strike them with the edge of the sword. He will not spare them, have pity, or have mercy.”’

“You shall say to this people, ‘The LORD says: “Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.

He who remains in this city will die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, but he who goes out and passes over to the Chaldeans who besiege you, he will live, and he will escape with his life.

For I have set my face on this city for evil, and not for good,” says the LORD. “It will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire.”’

“Concerning the house of the king of Judah, hear the LORD’s word:
- 12
House of David, the LORD says, ‘Execute justice in the morning, and deliver him who is robbed out of the hand of the oppressor, lest my wrath go out like fire, and burn so that no one can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.
- 13
Behold, I am against you, O inhabitant of the valley, and of the rock of the plain,’ says the LORD. ‘You that say, “Who would come down against us?” or, “Who would enter into our homes?”
- 14
I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings,’ says the LORD; ‘and I will kindle a fire in her forest, and it will devour all that is around her.’”
