Now estas são as palavras da carta que Jeremias, o profeta, enviou de Jerusalém aos resíduos dos anciãos do cativeiro, aos sacerdotes, aos profetas e a todo o povo que Nabucodonosor havia levado cativo de Jerusalém para a Babilônia,

(depois de Jeconias, o rei), a mãe rainha, os eunucos, os príncipes de Judá e Jerusalém, os artesãos e os ferreiros haviam partido de Jerusalém),
- 3
pela mão de Elasah, filho de Safã, e Gemarias, filho de Hilquias (que Zedequias, rei de Judá, enviou à Babilônia para Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia). Dizia ele:

Yahweh dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel, diz a todos os cativos que eu fiz com que fossem levados cativos de Jerusalém para a Babilônia:
- 5
“Construa casas e habite nelas. Plantem jardins e comam seus frutos”.
- 6
Levar esposas e pais filhos e filhas. Tomem esposas para seus filhos e dêem suas filhas aos maridos, para que eles possam ter filhos e filhas. Multipliquem-se ali e não sejam diminuídos.

Busquem a paz da cidade onde vos fiz cair em cativeiro, e rezem a Javé por ela; pois em sua paz tereis paz”.

Para Iavé dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel diz: “Não deixe que seus profetas que estão entre vocês e seus adivinhadores o enganem. Não escute seus sonhos que você faz sonhar”.

Pois eles profetizam falsamente para vocês em meu nome. Eu não os enviei”, diz Yahweh.

Pois Yahweh diz: “Depois de setenta anos de Babilônia, eu o visitarei e cumprirei minha boa palavra para com você, fazendo-o voltar a este lugar”.
- 11
Pois eu conheço os pensamentos que eu penso para você”, diz Javé, “pensamentos de paz, e não de mal, para lhe dar esperança e um futuro”.

Vós me invocareis, e ireis rezar comigo, e eu vos ouvirei”.
- 13
Você me buscará e me encontrará, quando me procurar de todo o coração.
- 14
Serei encontrado por ti”, diz Javé, “e voltarei ao teu cativeiro, e te congregarei de todas as nações, e de todos os lugares para onde te conduzi, diz Javé. Eu o levarei novamente ao lugar de onde o fiz ser levado em cativeiro”. '

Porque você disse: “Javé nos levantou profetas na Babilônia”,

Javé diz a respeito do rei que está sentado no trono de Davi, e a respeito de todo o povo que habita nesta cidade, seus irmãos que não foram com você para o cativeiro,

Javé dos Exércitos diz: “Eis que enviarei sobre eles a espada, a fome e a peste, e os farei como figos podres que não podem ser comidos, eles são tão ruins.

persegui-los-ei com a espada, com a fome e com a peste, e os entregarei para serem jogados para frente e para trás entre todos os reinos da terra, para serem objeto de horror, de espanto, de assobio e de reprovação entre todas as nações para onde os conduzi,
- 19
porque não ouviram minhas palavras”, diz Javé, “com as quais enviei a eles meus servos, os profetas, levantando-me cedo e enviando-os”; mas vocês não quiseram ouvir”, diz Iavé.'

Ouçam portanto a palavra de Javé, todos vocês cativos que enviei de Jerusalém para a Babilônia.

Javé de Exércitos, o Deus de Israel, diz a respeito de Acabe, filho de Colaías, e de Zedequias, filho de Maaséias, que vos profetiza uma mentira em meu nome: “Eis que os entregarei nas mãos de Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia; e ele os matará diante de vossos olhos.

Uma maldição será levada sobre eles por todos os cativos de Judá que estão na Babilônia, dizendo: 'Javé vos faz como Zedequias e como Acabe, a quem o rei da Babilônia assou no fogo';

porque fizeram coisas insensatas em Israel, e cometeram adultério com as esposas de seus vizinhos, e pronunciaram palavras falsas em meu nome, que eu não lhes ordenei. Eu sou aquele que sabe e sou testemunha”, diz Yahweh. '

Em relação a Semaías, o Neelamita, você falará, dizendo:

“Yahweh dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel, diz: 'Porque você enviou cartas em seu próprio nome a todo o povo que está em Jerusalém, e a Sofonias, o filho de Maaséias, o sacerdote', e a todos os sacerdotes, dizendo:

“Javé o fez sacerdote no lugar de Jehoiada o sacerdote, para que haja oficiais na casa de Javé, para cada homem que é louco e se faz profeta, para que você o ponha no estoque e em grilhões.

Agora, portanto, por que não repreendeu Jeremias de Anatoth, que se faz profeta para você,

porque ele nos enviou na Babilônia, dizendo: O cativeiro é longo. Constrói casas, e habita nelas. Plantem jardins, e comam seus frutos...””.

Zephaniah o sacerdote leu esta carta na audiência de Jeremias o profeta.

Então a palavra de Javé veio a Jeremias, dizendo:

“Envie a todos os cativos, dizendo: 'Javé diz a respeito de Semaías, o Neelamita': “Porque Semaías vos profetizou, e eu não o enviei, e ele vos fez confiar em uma mentira”,

portanto Javé diz: “Eis que castigarei Semaías, o neelamita, e sua descendência”. Ele não terá um homem para morar no meio deste povo”. Ele não verá o bem que eu farei ao meu povo”, diz Javé, “porque ele falou rebelião contra Javé””.

Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the residue of the elders of the captivity, and to the priests, to the prophets, and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon,

(after Jeconiah the king, the queen mother, the eunuchs, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen, and the smiths had departed from Jerusalem),

by the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon). It said:

The LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says to all the captives whom I have caused to be carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon:
- 5
“Build houses and dwell in them. Plant gardens and eat their fruit.
- 6
Take wives and father sons and daughters. Take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters. Multiply there, and don’t be diminished.
- 7
Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace.”

For the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel says: “Don’t let your prophets who are among you and your diviners deceive you. Don’t listen to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed.
- 9
For they prophesy falsely to you in my name. I have not sent them,” says the LORD.
- 10
For the LORD says, “After seventy years are accomplished for Babylon, I will visit you and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.
- 11
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the LORD, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.
- 12
You shall call on me, and you shall go and pray to me, and I will listen to you.
- 13
You shall seek me and find me, when you search for me with all your heart.
- 14
I will be found by you,” says the LORD, “and I will turn again your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places where I have driven you,” says the LORD. “I will bring you again to the place from where I caused you to be carried away captive.”

Because you have said, “The LORD has raised us up prophets in Babylon,”
- 16
the LORD says concerning the king who sits on David’s throne, and concerning all the people who dwell in this city, your brothers who haven’t gone with you into captivity,
- 17
the LORD of Armies says: “Behold, I will send on them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like rotten figs that can’t be eaten, they are so bad.

I will pursue after them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be tossed back and forth among all the kingdoms of the earth, to be an object of horror, an astonishment, a hissing, and a reproach among all the nations where I have driven them,

because they have not listened to my words,” says the LORD, “with which I sent to them my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but you would not hear,” says the LORD.

Hear therefore the LORD’s word, all you captives whom I have sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon.

The LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and concerning Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who prophesy a lie to you in my name: “Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and he will kill them before your eyes.

A curse will be taken up about them by all the captives of Judah who are in Babylon, saying, ‘The LORD make you like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;’

because they have done foolish things in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives, and have spoken words in my name falsely, which I didn’t command them. I am he who knows, and am witness,” says the LORD.

Concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite you shall speak, saying,

“The LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says, ‘Because you have sent letters in your own name to all the people who are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, and to all the priests, saying,
- 26
“The LORD has made you priest in the place of Jehoiada the priest, that there may be officers in the LORD’s house, for every man who is crazy and makes himself a prophet, that you should put him in the stocks and in shackles.
- 27
Now therefore, why have you not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth, who makes himself a prophet to you,
- 28
because he has sent to us in Babylon, saying, The captivity is long. Build houses, and dwell in them. Plant gardens, and eat their fruit?”’”

Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the hearing of Jeremiah the prophet.

Then the LORD’s word came to Jeremiah, saying,
- 31
“Send to all of the captives, saying, ‘The LORD says concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite: “Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, and I didn’t send him, and he has caused you to trust in a lie,”
- 32
therefore the LORD says, “Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his offspring. He will not have a man to dwell among this people. He won’t see the good that I will do to my people,” says the LORD, “because he has spoken rebellion against the LORD.”’”
