Since muitos se comprometeram a colocar em ordem uma narrativa a respeito daqueles assuntos que foram cumpridos entre nós,

mesmo quando aqueles que desde o início foram testemunhas oculares e servidores da palavra nos entregaram,

it também me pareceu bom, tendo traçado o curso de todas as coisas com precisão desde o primeiro, para escrever a você em ordem, o mais excelente Teófilo;
4
para que você possa saber a certeza a respeito das coisas em que você foi instruído.

Havia nos dias de Herodes, o rei da Judéia, um certo sacerdote chamado Zacarias, da divisão sacerdotal de Abijah. Ele tinha uma esposa das filhas de Aarão, e seu nome era Isabel.
6
Ambos eram justos diante de Deus, andando sem culpa em todos os mandamentos e ordenanças do Senhor.
7
Mas elas não tinham filhos, porque Isabel era estéril, e ambas estavam bem avançadas em anos.
8
Agora, enquanto ele executava o ofício sacerdotal diante de Deus na ordem de sua divisão
9
de acordo com o costume do ofício sacerdotal, sua sorte era entrar no templo do Senhor e queimar incenso.
10
Toda a multidão do povo estava orando do lado de fora na hora do incenso.
11
Apareceu-lhe um anjo do Senhor, de pé no lado direito do altar do incenso.
12
Zacarias ficou perturbado quando o viu, e o medo caiu sobre ele.
13
Mas o anjo lhe disse: “Não tenha medo, Zacarias, porque seu pedido foi ouvido. Sua esposa, Elizabeth, lhe dará um filho, e você chamará seu nome de João.
14
Você terá alegria e alegria, e muitos se regozijarão com seu nascimento.
15
Pois ele será grande aos olhos do Senhor, e não beberá vinho nem bebida forte. Ele será cheio do Espírito Santo, mesmo desde o ventre de sua mãe.
16
Ele voltará muitos dos filhos de Israel para o Senhor seu Deus.
17
Ele irá diante dele no espírito e no poder de Elias, 'para converter os corações dos pais aos filhos' e dos desobedientes à sabedoria dos justos; para preparar um povo preparado para o Senhor”.
18
Zacharias disse ao anjo: “Como posso ter certeza disso? Pois eu sou um homem velho, e minha esposa está bem avançada em anos”.
19
O anjo lhe respondeu: “Eu sou Gabriel, que estou na presença de Deus. Fui enviado para falar com vocês e trazer-lhes esta boa notícia”.
20
Eis que você ficará em silêncio e não poderá falar até o dia em que estas coisas acontecerão, porque não acreditou nas minhas palavras, que serão cumpridas no seu devido tempo”.
21
O povo estava esperando por Zacarias, e eles se maravilharam com o fato de ele se ter atrasado no templo.
22
Quando ele saiu, ele não podia falar com eles. Eles perceberam que ele tinha visto uma visão no templo. Ele continuou fazendo sinais para eles, e permaneceu mudo.
23
Quando os dias de seu serviço foram cumpridos, ele partiu para sua casa.
24
Depois desses dias Elizabeth sua esposa concebeu, e ela se escondeu cinco meses, dizendo:
25
“Assim me fez o Senhor nos dias em que olhou para mim, para tirar minha reprovação entre os homens”.
26
Agora, no sexto mês, o anjo Gabriel foi enviado de Deus para uma cidade da Galiléia chamada Nazaré,
27
para uma virgem prometida em casamento com um homem cujo nome era José, da casa de Davi. O nome da virgem era Maria.
28
Having entre, o anjo lhe disse: “Alegre-se, você a favoreceu muito! O Senhor está com você. Abençoada sejais vós entre as mulheres”.
29
Mas quando ela o viu, ficou muito perturbada com o ditado, e considerou que tipo de saudação isso poderia ser.
30
O anjo lhe disse: “Não tenha medo, Maria, pois você encontrou favor com Deus.
31
Eis que conceberás em teu ventre e darás à luz um filho, e lhe darás o nome de “Jesus”.
32
Ele será grande e será chamado o Filho do Altíssimo. O Senhor Deus lhe dará o trono de seu pai David,
33
e ele reinará sobre a casa de Jacó para sempre. Não haverá fim para o seu Reino”.
34
Mary disse ao anjo: “Como isso pode ser, vendo que sou virgem”?
35
O anjo lhe respondeu: “O Espírito Santo virá sobre você, e o poder do Altíssimo o ofuscará”. Portanto, também o santo que nascer de vós será chamado Filho de Deus.
36
Eis que Isabel, sua parente, também concebeu um filho em sua velhice; e este é o sexto mês com ela que foi chamada estéril.
37
Pois nada do que Deus diz é impossível”.
38
Maria disse: “Eis o servo do Senhor; faça-se em mim segundo a vossa palavra”. Então o anjo se afastou dela.
39
Maria levantou-se naqueles dias e entrou apressadamente no país das colinas, em uma cidade de Judá,
40
e entrou na casa de Zacarias e cumprimentou Isabel.
41
Quando Elizabeth ouviu a saudação de Maria, o bebê saltou em seu ventre; e Elizabeth foi cheia do Espírito Santo.
42
Ela chamou em voz alta e disse: “Bendita és tu entre as mulheres, e bendito é o fruto do teu ventre!
43
Why sou tão favorecida, que a mãe de meu Senhor deveria vir a mim?
44
Pois eis que, quando a voz de vossa saudação chegou a meus ouvidos, o bebê saltou de alegria em meu ventre!
45
Bem-aventurada aquela que acreditou, pois haverá um cumprimento das coisas que lhe foram ditas pelo Senhor”!
46
Disse Mary, “Minha alma engrandece o Senhor”.
47
Meu espírito rejubilou em Deus, meu Salvador,
48
pois ele olhou para o humilde estado de seu servo. Pois eis que de agora em diante, todas as gerações me chamarão de abençoado.
49
Para aquele que é poderoso, fez grandes coisas por mim. Santo é seu nome.
50
Sua misericórdia é por gerações e gerações para com aqueles que o temem.
51
Ele mostrou força com seu braço. Ele espalhou o orgulho na imaginação de seus corações.
52
Ele derrubou príncipes de seus tronos, e tem exaltado os humildes.
53
Ele encheu os famintos de coisas boas. Ele mandou os ricos embora vazios.
54
Ele deu ajuda a Israel, seu servo, para que ele pudesse se lembrar da misericórdia,
55
enquanto ele falava com nossos pais, a Abraão e sua descendência para sempre”.
56
Mary ficou com ela cerca de três meses, e depois voltou para sua casa.
57
Agora o tempo em que Elizabeth deveria dar à luz foi cumprido, e ela deu à luz a um filho.
58
Seus vizinhos e parentes ouviram que o Senhor tinha aumentado sua misericórdia para com ela, e se regozijaram com ela.
59
No oitavo dia, eles vieram para circuncidar a criança; e o teriam chamado de Zacarias, depois do nome de seu pai.
60
Sua mãe respondeu: “Não é assim; mas ele será chamado João”.
61
Eles disseram a ela: “Não há ninguém entre seus parentes que seja chamado por este nome”.
62
Eles fizeram sinais para seu pai, como ele gostaria que ele o chamasse.
63
Ele pediu uma tábua de escrever, e escreveu: “Seu nome é John”. Todos eles se maravilharam.
64
Sua boca foi aberta imediatamente e sua língua libertada, e ele falou, abençoando a Deus.
65
O medo veio sobre todos os que viviam ao seu redor, e todos estes ditados foram falados em toda a região montanhosa da Judéia.
66
Todos os que os ouviram os deitaram em seu coração, dizendo: “O que será então esta criança”? A mão do Senhor estava com ele.
67
Seu pai Zacharias foi cheio do Espírito Santo, e profetizou, dizendo,
68
“Bendito seja o Senhor, o Deus de Israel”, pois ele visitou e resgatou seu povo;
69
e levantou um chifre de salvação para nós na casa de seu servo David
70
(como ele falou pela boca de seus santos profetas que foram de outrora),
71
salvação de nossos inimigos e da mão de todos os que nos odeiam;
72
para mostrar misericórdia para com nossos pais, para lembrar seu santo pacto,
73
o juramento que ele fez a Abraão, nosso pai,
74
para nos conceder que nós, sendo libertados das mãos de nossos inimigos, deve servi-lo sem medo,
75
em santidade e retidão diante dele todos os dias de nossa vida.
76
E você, criança, será chamada de profeta do Altíssimo; pois você irá diante da face do Senhor para preparar seus caminhos,
77
para dar conhecimento da salvação a seu povo através da remissão de seus pecados,
78
por causa da terna misericórdia de nosso Deus, pelo qual o amanhecer do alto nos visitará,
79
para brilhar sobre aqueles que se sentam na escuridão e na sombra da morte; para guiar nossos pés para o caminho da paz”.
80
A criança estava crescendo e se tornando forte em espírito, e esteve no deserto até o dia de sua aparição pública em Israel.

Since many have undertaken to set in order a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us,
2
even as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word delivered them to us,
3
it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write to you in order, most excellent Theophilus;
4
that you might know the certainty concerning the things in which you were instructed.
5
There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the priestly division of Abijah. He had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
6
They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.
7
But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they both were well advanced in years.
8
Now while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his division
9
according to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.
10
The whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense.
11
An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
12
Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.
13
But the angel said to him, “Don’t be afraid, Zacharias, because your request has been heard. Your wife, Elizabeth, will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.
14
You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.
15
For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.
16
He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.
17
He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to prepare a people prepared for the Lord.”
18
Zacharias said to the angel, “How can I be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.”
19
The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God. I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.
20
Behold, you will be silent and not able to speak until the day that these things will happen, because you didn’t believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”
21
The people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marveled that he delayed in the temple.
22
When he came out, he could not speak to them. They perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple. He continued making signs to them, and remained mute.
23
When the days of his service were fulfilled, he departed to his house.
24
After these days Elizabeth his wife conceived, and she hid herself five months, saying,
25
“Thus has the Lord done to me in the days in which he looked at me, to take away my reproach among men.”
26
Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,
27
to a virgin pledged to be married to a man whose name was Joseph, of David’s house. The virgin’s name was Mary.
28
Having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, you highly favored one! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women!”
29
But when she saw him, she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered what kind of salutation this might be.
30
The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
31
Behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and shall name him ‘Jesus.’
32
He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,
33
and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom.”
34
Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, seeing I am a virgin?”
35
The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God.
36
Behold, Elizabeth your relative also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.
37
For nothing spoken by God is impossible.”
38
Mary said, “Behold, the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.
39
Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah,
40
and entered into the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.
41
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
42
She called out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
43
Why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44
For behold, when the voice of your greeting came into my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy!
45
Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord!”
46
Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord.
47
My spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior,
48
for he has looked at the humble state of his servant. For behold, from now on, all generations will call me blessed.
49
For he who is mighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name.
50
His mercy is for generations and generations on those who fear him.
51
He has shown strength with his arm. He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52
He has put down princes from their thrones, and has exalted the lowly.
53
He has filled the hungry with good things. He has sent the rich away empty.
54
He has given help to Israel, his servant, that he might remember mercy,
55
as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and his offspring forever.”
56
Mary stayed with her about three months, and then returned to her house.
57
Now the time that Elizabeth should give birth was fulfilled, and she gave birth to a son.
58
Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy toward her, and they rejoiced with her.
59
On the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
60
His mother answered, “Not so; but he will be called John.”
61
They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.”
62
They made signs to his father, what he would have him called.
63
He asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, “His name is John.” They all marveled.
64
His mouth was opened immediately and his tongue freed, and he spoke, blessing God.
65
Fear came on all who lived around them, and all these sayings were talked about throughout all the hill country of Judea.
66
All who heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, “What then will this child be?” The hand of the Lord was with him.
67
His father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,
68
“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people;
69
and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David
70
(as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets who have been from of old),
71
salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us;
72
to show mercy toward our fathers, to remember his holy covenant,
73
the oath which he swore to Abraham our father,
74
to grant to us that we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, should serve him without fear,
75
in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life.
76
And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways,
77
to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the remission of their sins,
78
because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the dawn from on high will visit us,
79
to shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death; to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
80
The child was growing and becoming strong in spirit, and was in the desert until the day of his public appearance to Israel.
