Mateus 18

Os discípulos perguntam quem é o maior, e Jesus responde colocando uma criança no meio deles: a grandeza no Reino é tornar-se pequeno. A partir daí o capítulo vira um manual de vida em comunidade: cuidar dos "pequeninos", a ovelha perdida que se busca deixando as noventa e nove, os passos para corrigir o irmão que peca e a espantosa aritmética do perdão. Repare no fio que une tudo: como tratar o vulnerável e o ofensor sem desprezar nenhum dos dois.

Naquela hora, os discípulos aproximaram-se de Jesus, dizendo: “Quem é, então, o maior no Reino dos Céus?”

Jesus chamou uma criança para junto de si, colocou-a no meio deles

e disse: “Em verdade lhes digo: a não ser que vocês se convertam e se tornem como crianças, de modo algum entrarão no Reino dos Céus.
4
Portanto, aquele que se humilhar como esta criança, esse é o maior no Reino dos Céus.
5
E quem receber uma criança como esta em meu nome, recebe a mim;
6
mas quem fizer tropeçar um destes pequeninos que creem em mim, melhor lhe seria que uma grande pedra de moinho fosse pendurada em seu pescoço e que fosse afundado nas profundezas do mar.

“Ai do mundo por causa das ocasiões de tropeço! Pois é necessário que venham as ocasiões, mas ai daquela pessoa por meio de quem a ocasião vem!

Se a sua mão ou o seu pé o faz tropeçar, corte-o e jogue-o fora. É melhor para você entrar na vida mutilado ou aleijado, do que, tendo duas mãos ou dois pés, ser lançado no fogo eterno.

Se o seu olho o faz tropeçar, arranque-o e jogue-o fora. É melhor para você entrar na vida com um olho só, do que, tendo os dois olhos, ser lançado na Geena de fogo.

Cuidado para não desprezarem um destes pequeninos, pois eu lhes digo que nos céus os seus anjos sempre veem a face de meu Pai que está nos céus.

Porque o Filho do Homem veio para salvar o que estava perdido.

“O que vocês acham? Se um homem tem cem ovelhas, e uma delas se desgarra, ele não deixa as noventa e nove, vai aos montes e procura aquela que se desgarrou?
13
Se ele a encontra, em verdade lhes digo, ele se alegra mais por causa dela do que pelas noventa e nove que não se desgarraram.
14
Da mesma forma, não é a vontade de seu Pai que está nos céus que um destes pequeninos pereça.
15
“Se o seu irmão pecar contra você, vá e mostre-lhe o seu erro, apenas entre você e ele. Se ele o ouvir, você ganhou de volta o seu irmão.
16
Mas, se ele não o ouvir, leve consigo mais um ou dois, para que pela boca de duas ou três testemunhas toda palavra seja confirmada.
17
Se ele se recusar a ouvi-los, conte à igreja. Se ele se recusar a ouvir também a igreja, considere-o como um gentio ou um cobrador de impostos.
18
Em verdade lhes digo: tudo o que vocês ligarem na terra terá sido ligado no céu, e tudo o que vocês desligarem na terra terá sido desligado no céu.
19
Novamente, com toda a certeza lhes digo que, se dois de vocês concordarem na terra a respeito de qualquer coisa que pedirem, isso lhes será feito por meu Pai que está nos céus.
20
Pois onde dois ou três estiverem reunidos em meu nome, ali estou eu no meio deles.”
21
Então Pedro aproximou-se e lhe disse: “Senhor, quantas vezes o meu irmão pecará contra mim, e eu lhe perdoarei? Até sete vezes?”
22
Jesus lhe disse: “Eu não lhe digo até sete vezes, mas até setenta vezes sete.
23
Portanto, o Reino dos Céus é semelhante a um certo rei que desejava acertar as contas com os seus servos.
24
Quando ele começou a acertar, foi-lhe trazido um que lhe devia dez mil talentos.
25
Mas, como ele não tinha com que pagar, o seu senhor ordenou que ele fosse vendido, com sua esposa, seus filhos e tudo o que ele tinha, para que a dívida fosse paga.
26
O servo, portanto, prostrou-se e ajoelhou-se diante dele, dizendo: 'Senhor, tenha paciência comigo, e eu lhe pagarei tudo!'
27
O senhor daquele servo, movido de íntima compaixão, soltou-o e perdoou-lhe a dívida.
28
“Mas aquele servo saiu e encontrou um dos seus conservos que lhe devia cem denários, e ele o agarrou e o tomou pela garganta, dizendo: 'Pague-me o que você deve!'
29
“Então o seu conservo prostrou-se aos seus pés e lhe implorou, dizendo: 'Tenha paciência comigo, e eu lhe pagarei!'
30
Ele, porém, não quis; antes, foi e o lançou na prisão, até que pagasse o que devia.
31
Quando os seus conservos viram o que havia acontecido, ficaram extremamente tristes, e foram contar ao seu senhor tudo o que havia acontecido.
32
Então o seu senhor o chamou e lhe disse: 'Servo mau! Eu lhe perdoei toda aquela dívida porque você me implorou.
33
Você não devia também ter tido misericórdia do seu conservo, assim como eu tive misericórdia de você?'
34
O seu senhor ficou irado e o entregou aos torturadores, até que pagasse tudo o que lhe devia.
35
Assim também meu Pai celestial fará a vocês, se cada um de vocês não perdoar de coração ao seu irmão pelas suas ofensas.”

In that hour the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who then is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?”

Jesus called a little child to himself, and set him in the middle of them
3
and said, “Most certainly I tell you, unless you turn and become as little children, you will in no way enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.
4
Whoever therefore humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.
5
Whoever receives one such little child in my name receives me,
6
but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him if a huge millstone were hung around his neck and that he were sunk in the depths of the sea.
7
“Woe to the world because of occasions of stumbling! For it must be that the occasions come, but woe to that person through whom the occasion comes!
8
If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life maimed or crippled, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into the eternal fire.
9
If your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the Gehenna of fire.
10
See that you don’t despise one of these little ones, for I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.
11
For the Son of Man came to save that which was lost.
12
“What do you think? If a man has one hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine, go to the mountains, and seek that which has gone astray?
13
If he finds it, most certainly I tell you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine which have not gone astray.
14
Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.
15
“If your brother sins against you, go, show him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained back your brother.
16
But if he doesn’t listen, take one or two more with you, that at the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.
17
If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the assembly. If he refuses to hear the assembly also, let him be to you as a Gentile or a tax collector.
18
Most certainly I tell you, whatever things you bind on earth will have been bound in heaven, and whatever things you release on earth will have been released in heaven.
19
Again, assuredly I tell you, that if two of you will agree on earth concerning anything that they will ask, it will be done for them by my Father who is in heaven.
20
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them.”
21
Then Peter came and said to him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Until seven times?”
22
Jesus said to him, “I don’t tell you until seven times, but, until seventy times seven.
23
Therefore the Kingdom of Heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.
24
When he had begun to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.
25
But because he couldn’t pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, with his wife, his children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.
26
The servant therefore fell down and knelt before him, saying, ‘Lord, have patience with me, and I will repay you all!’
27
The lord of that servant, being moved with compassion, released him and forgave him the debt.
28
“But that servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him one hundred denarii, and he grabbed him and took him by the throat, saying, ‘Pay me what you owe!’
29
“So his fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will repay you!’
30
He would not, but went and cast him into prison until he should pay back that which was due.
31
So when his fellow servants saw what was done, they were exceedingly sorry, and came and told their lord all that was done.
32
Then his lord called him in and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me.
33
Shouldn’t you also have had mercy on your fellow servant, even as I had mercy on you?’
34
His lord was angry, and delivered him to the tormentors until he should pay all that was due to him.
35
So my heavenly Father will also do to you, if you don’t each forgive your brother from your hearts for his misdeeds.”

Setenta vezes sete e uma dívida impagável

Pedro propõe sete como limite generoso do perdão; Jesus troca o teto por "setenta vezes sete" e depois uma parábola. Um servo a quem se perdoam dez mil talentos agarra um conservo por cem denários: a recusa imperdoável de repassar a misericórdia recebida.

Os números é que ensinam: a dívida perdoada é impagável; a cobrada, ínfima em comparação. O perdão brota do coração ou não brota.
