Ora, os filhos de Rúben e os filhos de Gade tinham uma quantidade muito grande de gado. Eles viram a terra de Jazer e a terra de Gileade. Eis que o lugar era um lugar para gado.
- 2
Então os filhos de Gade e os filhos de Rúben vieram e falaram a Moisés, ao sacerdote Eleazar e aos líderes da congregação, dizendo:
- 3
“Atarote, Dibom, Jazer, Ninra, Hesbom, Eleale, Sebã, Nebo e Beom,
- 4
a terra que o SENHOR feriu diante da congregação de Israel, é uma terra para gado; e os seus servos têm gado.”
- 5
Eles disseram: “Se achamos favor aos seus olhos, que esta terra seja dada aos seus servos como propriedade. Não nos faça atravessar o Jordão.”
- 6
Moisés disse aos filhos de Gade e aos filhos de Rúben: “Acaso os seus irmãos irão à guerra enquanto vocês ficam sentados aqui?
- 7
Por que vocês desencorajam o coração dos filhos de Israel de atravessar para a terra que o SENHOR lhes deu?
- 8
Foi isso que os pais de vocês fizeram quando os enviei de Cades-Barneia para ver a terra.

Pois quando subiram até o vale de Escol e viram a terra, eles desencorajaram o coração dos filhos de Israel, para que não entrassem na terra que o SENHOR lhes tinha dado.
- 10
A ira do SENHOR se acendeu naquele dia, e ele jurou, dizendo:
- 11
'Certamente nenhum dos homens que subiram do Egito, de vinte anos para cima, verá a terra que jurei a Abraão, a Isaque e a Jacó; porque não me seguiram totalmente,
- 12
exceto Calebe, filho de Jefoné, o quenezeu, e Josué, filho de Num, porque seguiram o SENHOR completamente.'

A ira do SENHOR se acendeu contra Israel, e ele os fez vagar de um lado para outro no deserto por quarenta anos, até que toda a geração que havia feito o mal aos olhos do SENHOR fosse consumida.
- 14
“Eis que vocês se levantaram no lugar de seus pais, uma geração de homens pecadores, para aumentar a ardente ira do SENHOR contra Israel.
- 15
Pois se vocês se desviarem de segui-lo, ele os deixará mais uma vez no deserto; e vocês destruirão todo este povo.”
- 16
Eles se aproximaram dele e disseram: “Construiremos currais aqui para o nosso gado, e cidades para as nossas crianças;
- 17
mas nós mesmos estaremos prontos e armados para ir adiante dos filhos de Israel, até que os tenhamos levado ao seu lugar. Nossas crianças habitarão nas cidades fortificadas por causa dos habitantes da terra.

Não voltaremos para nossas casas até que todos os filhos de Israel tenham recebido a sua herança.
- 19
Pois não herdaremos com eles do outro lado do Jordão e além, porque a nossa herança nos tocou deste lado do Jordão, para o oriente.”
- 20
Moisés lhes disse: “Se vocês fizerem isso, se vocês se armarem para ir à guerra perante o SENHOR,
- 21
e cada um dos seus homens armados atravessar o Jordão perante o SENHOR, até que ele tenha expulsado os seus inimigos de diante dele,
- 22
e a terra for subjugada perante o SENHOR; então, depois disso, vocês poderão voltar e estarão livres de obrigação para com o SENHOR e para com Israel. Então esta terra será a propriedade de vocês perante o SENHOR.

“Mas se vocês não fizerem assim, eis que terão pecado contra o SENHOR; e estejam certos de que o seu pecado os alcançará.
- 24
Construam cidades para as suas crianças e currais para as suas ovelhas; e façam o que saiu da boca de vocês.”
- 25
Os filhos de Gade e os filhos de Rúben falaram a Moisés, dizendo: “Seus servos farão como o meu senhor ordena.
- 26
Nossas crianças, nossas esposas, nossos rebanhos e todo o nosso gado ficarão lá nas cidades de Gileade;
- 27
mas os seus servos atravessarão, todo homem armado para a guerra, perante o SENHOR para a batalha, como diz o meu senhor.”
- 28
Então Moisés deu ordens a respeito deles ao sacerdote Eleazar, a Josué, filho de Num, e aos chefes das casas paternas das tribos dos filhos de Israel.
- 29
Moisés lhes disse: “Se os filhos de Gade e os filhos de Rúben atravessarem o Jordão com vocês, todo homem armado para a batalha perante o SENHOR, e a terra for subjugada diante de vocês, então vocês lhes darão a terra de Gileade como propriedade;
- 30
mas se eles não atravessarem armados com vocês, terão propriedades entre vocês na terra de Canaã.”
- 31
Os filhos de Gade e os filhos de Rúben responderam, dizendo: “Como o SENHOR disse aos seus servos, assim faremos.
- 32
Atravessaremos armados perante o SENHOR para a terra de Canaã, e a propriedade da nossa herança permanecerá conosco do outro lado do Jordão.”

Moisés deu a eles, aos filhos de Gade, aos filhos de Rúben e à meia tribo de Manassés, filho de José, o reino de Seom, rei dos amorreus, e o reino de Ogue, rei de Basã; a terra, de acordo com as suas cidades e fronteiras, as cidades da terra ao redor.

Os filhos de Gade construíram Dibom, Atarote, Aroer,
- 35
Atarote-Sofã, Jazer, Jogbeá,
- 36
Bete-Ninra e Bete-Harã: cidades fortificadas e currais para ovelhas.

Os filhos de Rúben construíram Hesbom, Eleale, Quiriataim,
- 38
Nebo e Baal-Meom (tendo seus nomes mudados), e Sibma. Eles deram outros nomes às cidades que construíram.
- 39
Os filhos de Maquir, filho de Manassés, foram para Gileade, a tomaram e expulsaram os amorreus que lá estavam.
- 40
Moisés deu Gileade a Maquir, filho de Manassés; e ele habitou nela.
- 41
Jair, filho de Manassés, foi e tomou os seus povoados, e os chamou de Havote-Jair.
- 42
Noba foi e tomou Quenate e os seus povoados, e a chamou de Noba, segundo o seu próprio nome.

Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of livestock. They saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead. Behold, the place was a place for livestock.
- 2
Then the children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the princes of the congregation, saying,
- 3
“Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,
- 4
the land which the LORD struck before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock; and your servants have livestock.”
- 5
They said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession. Don’t bring us over the Jordan.”
- 6
Moses said to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, “Shall your brothers go to war while you sit here?
- 7
Why do you discourage the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD has given them?
- 8
Your fathers did so when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land.
- 9
For when they went up to the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which the LORD had given them.

The LORD’s anger burned in that day, and he swore, saying,
- 11
‘Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me,
- 12
except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun, because they have followed the LORD completely.’
- 13
The LORD’s anger burned against Israel, and he made them wander back and forth in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation who had done evil in the LORD’s sight was consumed.
- 14
“Behold, you have risen up in your fathers’ place, an increase of sinful men, to increase the fierce anger of the LORD toward Israel.
- 15
For if you turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and you will destroy all these people.”
- 16
They came near to him, and said, “We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones;
- 17
but we ourselves will be ready armed to go before the children of Israel, until we have brought them to their place. Our little ones shall dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
- 18
We will not return to our houses until the children of Israel have all received their inheritance.
- 19
For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan eastward.”
- 20
Moses said to them: “If you will do this thing, if you will arm yourselves to go before the LORD to the war,
- 21
and every one of your armed men will pass over the Jordan before the LORD until he has driven out his enemies from before him,
- 22
and the land is subdued before the LORD; then afterward you shall return, and be clear of obligation to the LORD and to Israel. Then this land shall be your possession before the LORD.
- 23
“But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD; and be sure your sin will find you out.
- 24
Build cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which has proceeded out of your mouth.”
- 25
The children of Gad and the children of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying, “Your servants will do as my lord commands.
- 26
Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock shall be there in the cities of Gilead;
- 27
but your servants will pass over, every man who is armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord says.”
- 28
So Moses commanded concerning them to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers’ households of the tribes of the children of Israel.

Moses said to them, “If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over the Jordan, every man who is armed to battle before the LORD, and the land is subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession;
- 30
but if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.”
- 31
The children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, “As the LORD has said to your servants, so will we do.
- 32
We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us beyond the Jordan.”
- 33
Moses gave to them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan; the land, according to its cities and borders, even the cities of the surrounding land.

The children of Gad built Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
- 35
Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,
- 36
Beth Nimrah, and Beth Haran: fortified cities and folds for sheep.
- 37
The children of Reuben built Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,
- 38
Nebo, and Baal Meon, (their names being changed), and Sibmah. They gave other names to the cities which they built.
- 39
The children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were therein.
- 40
Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh; and he lived therein.
- 41
Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its villages, and called them Havvoth Jair.
- 42
Nobah went and took Kenath and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.
