Atos 21
A viagem por mar termina e o caminho até Jerusalém estreita-se. Em Tiro e depois em Cesareia, discípulos e o profeta Ágabo avisam Paulo das cadeias que o esperam; Ágabo ata as próprias mãos com o cinto de Paulo. Paulo não recua: está pronto a morrer por causa do nome do Senhor Jesus. Repare-se como o perigo anunciado chega quase de imediato: Tiago pede-lhe que custeie os votos de quatro homens no templo, e ali mesmo judeus da Ásia prendem-no e provocam um tumulto.

Depois de nos separarmos deles e zarparmos, navegamos em curso direto para Cós, no dia seguinte para Rodes, e dali para Pátara.

Tendo encontrado um navio que fazia a travessia para a Fenícia, embarcamos e zarpamos.

Quando avistamos Chipre, deixando-a à esquerda, navegamos para a Síria e desembarcamos em Tiro, pois o navio ia descarregar ali a sua carga.

Tendo encontrado os discípulos, ficamos ali sete dias. Eles diziam a Paulo, pelo Espírito, que não subisse a Jerusalém.

Quando aqueles dias terminaram, partimos e seguimos nossa viagem. Todos eles, com as esposas e filhos, nos acompanharam até fora da cidade. Ajoelhando-nos na praia, oramos.

Depois de nos despedirmos uns dos outros, embarcamos no navio, e eles voltaram para suas casas.

Quando terminamos a viagem vindo de Tiro, chegamos a Ptolemaida. Saudamos os irmãos e ficamos com eles um dia.

No dia seguinte, nós, que éramos companheiros de Paulo, partimos e chegamos a Cesareia. Entramos na casa de Filipe, o evangelista, que era um dos sete, e ficamos com ele.

Ora, este homem tinha quatro filhas virgens que profetizavam.

Como ficamos ali alguns dias, desceu da Judeia um certo profeta chamado Ágabo.

Vindo até nós e tomando o cinto de Paulo, ele amarrou os próprios pés e mãos, e disse: “Assim diz o Espírito Santo: 'Desta maneira os judeus em Jerusalém amarrarão o homem a quem pertence este cinto, e o entregarão nas mãos dos gentios.'”

Quando ouvimos estas coisas, tanto nós como as pessoas daquele lugar imploramos a ele que não subisse a Jerusalém.

Então Paulo respondeu: “O que vocês estão fazendo, chorando e partindo o meu coração? Pois estou pronto não apenas para ser amarrado, mas também para morrer em Jerusalém pelo nome do Senhor Jesus.”

Como ele não se deixou persuadir, nós desistimos, dizendo: “Seja feita a vontade do Senhor.”

Depois destes dias, arrumamos a nossa bagagem e subimos a Jerusalém.

Alguns dos discípulos de Cesareia também foram conosco, levando consigo um certo Mnasom, de Chipre, um dos primeiros discípulos, com quem nos hospedaríamos.

Quando chegamos a Jerusalém, os irmãos nos receberam com alegria.

No dia seguinte, Paulo foi conosco encontrar-se com Tiago; e todos os presbíteros estavam presentes.

Depois de saudá-los, ele relatou uma por uma as coisas que Deus havia feito entre os gentios por meio do seu ministério.

Eles, quando ouviram isso, glorificaram a Deus. E disseram a ele: “Você vê, irmão, quantos milhares de judeus há que creram, e todos são zelosos da lei.

Eles foram informados a seu respeito, de que você ensina todos os judeus que vivem entre os gentios a abandonarem Moisés, dizendo-lhes que não circuncidem os seus filhos e não andem segundo os costumes.

O que faremos então? A assembleia certamente deve se reunir, pois ouvirão que você chegou.

Portanto, faça o que lhe dizemos. Temos quatro homens que fizeram um voto.

Tome-os e purifique-se com eles, e pague as despesas deles, para que raspem a cabeça. Então todos saberão que não há verdade nas coisas de que foram informados a seu respeito, mas que você mesmo também anda guardando a lei.

Mas quanto aos gentios que creem, nós já escrevemos a nossa decisão de que eles não devem observar tais coisas, exceto que devem se abster de comida oferecida a ídolos, do sangue, da carne de animais estrangulados e da imoralidade sexual.”

Então Paulo tomou os homens e, no dia seguinte, purificou-se e entrou com eles no templo, declarando o cumprimento dos dias de purificação, até que a oferta fosse oferecida por cada um deles.

Quando os sete dias estavam quase terminando, os judeus da Ásia, ao vê-lo no templo, alvoroçaram toda a multidão e agarraram-no,

gritando: “Homens de Israel, ajudem! Este é o homem que ensina a todos em toda parte contra o povo, e a lei, e este lugar. Além disso, ele também trouxe gregos para o templo e profanou este lugar santo!”

Pois eles tinham visto Trófimo, o efésio, com ele na cidade, e supunham que Paulo o havia levado para o templo.

Toda a cidade se agitou e o povo correu para lá. Eles agarraram Paulo e o arrastaram para fora do templo. Imediatamente as portas foram fechadas.

Enquanto tentavam matá-lo, chegou a notícia ao comandante do regimento de que toda Jerusalém estava em alvoroço.

Imediatamente ele tomou soldados e centuriões e correu para eles. Eles, quando viram o comandante e os soldados, pararam de bater em Paulo.

Então o comandante se aproximou, prendeu-o, ordenou que fosse amarrado com duas correntes, e perguntou quem ele era e o que havia feito.

Alguns gritavam uma coisa e outros outra, no meio da multidão. Como ele não conseguiu descobrir a verdade por causa do tumulto, ordenou que ele fosse levado para a fortaleza.

Quando ele chegou às escadas, foi carregado pelos soldados por causa da violência da multidão;

pois a multidão do povo o seguia, gritando: “Fora com ele!”

Quando Paulo estava para ser levado para a fortaleza, ele perguntou ao comandante: “Posso falar com o senhor?” Ele disse: “Você sabe grego?

Não é você, então, o egípcio que antes destes dias provocou uma rebelião e liderou no deserto os quatro mil homens dos Assassinos?”

Mas Paulo disse: “Eu sou um judeu de Tarso, na Cilícia, cidadão de uma cidade não insignificante. Eu lhe imploro, permita-me falar ao povo.”

Quando ele lhe deu permissão, Paulo, em pé nas escadas, fez um sinal com a mão para o povo. Quando se fez um grande silêncio, ele lhes falou na língua hebraica, dizendo:

When we had departed from them and had set sail, we came with a straight course to Cos, and the next day to Rhodes, and from there to Patara.

Having found a ship crossing over to Phoenicia, we went aboard and set sail.

When we had come in sight of Cyprus, leaving it on the left hand, we sailed to Syria and landed at Tyre, for the ship was there to unload her cargo.

Having found disciples, we stayed there seven days. These said to Paul through the Spirit that he should not go up to Jerusalem.

When those days were over, we departed and went on our journey. They all, with wives and children, brought us on our way until we were out of the city. Kneeling down on the beach, we prayed.

After saying goodbye to each other, we went on board the ship, and they returned home again.

When we had finished the voyage from Tyre, we arrived at Ptolemais. We greeted the brothers and stayed with them one day.

On the next day, we who were Paul’s companions departed and came to Caesarea. We entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him.

Now this man had four virgin daughters who prophesied.
- 10
As we stayed there some days, a certain prophet named Agabus came down from Judea.
- 11
Coming to us and taking Paul’s belt, he bound his own feet and hands, and said, “The Holy Spirit says: ‘So the Jews at Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt, and will deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’”

When we heard these things, both we and the people of that place begged him not to go up to Jerusalem.

Then Paul answered, “What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”

When he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, “The Lord’s will be done.”

After these days we took up our baggage and went up to Jerusalem.

Some of the disciples from Caesarea also went with us, bringing one Mnason of Cyprus, an early disciple, with whom we would stay.
- 17
When we had come to Jerusalem, the brothers received us gladly.
- 18
The day following, Paul went in with us to James; and all the elders were present.

When he had greeted them, he reported one by one the things which God had worked among the Gentiles through his ministry.
- 20
They, when they heard it, glorified God. They said to him, “You see, brother, how many thousands there are among the Jews of those who have believed, and they are all zealous for the law.
- 21
They have been informed about you, that you teach all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children and not to walk after the customs.
- 22
What then? The assembly must certainly meet, for they will hear that you have come.
- 23
Therefore do what we tell you. We have four men who have taken a vow.
- 24
Take them and purify yourself with them, and pay their expenses for them, that they may shave their heads. Then all will know that there is no truth in the things that they have been informed about you, but that you yourself also walk keeping the law.

But concerning the Gentiles who believe, we have written our decision that they should observe no such thing, except that they should keep themselves from food offered to idols, from blood, from strangled things, and from sexual immorality.”

Then Paul took the men, and the next day purified himself and went with them into the temple, declaring the fulfillment of the days of purification, until the offering was offered for every one of them.

When the seven days were almost completed, the Jews from Asia, when they saw him in the temple, stirred up all the multitude and laid hands on him,
- 28
crying out, “Men of Israel, help! This is the man who teaches all men everywhere against the people, and the law, and this place. Moreover, he also brought Greeks into the temple and has defiled this holy place!”

For they had seen Trophimus the Ephesian with him in the city, and they supposed that Paul had brought him into the temple.

All the city was moved and the people ran together. They seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple. Immediately the doors were shut.

As they were trying to kill him, news came up to the commanding officer of the regiment that all Jerusalem was in an uproar.
- 32
Immediately he took soldiers and centurions and ran down to them. They, when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, stopped beating Paul.
- 33
Then the commanding officer came near, arrested him, commanded him to be bound with two chains, and inquired who he was and what he had done.
- 34
Some shouted one thing and some another, among the crowd. When he couldn’t find out the truth because of the noise, he commanded him to be brought into the barracks.

When he came to the stairs, he was carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the crowd;

for the multitude of the people followed after, crying out, “Away with him!”

As Paul was about to be brought into the barracks, he asked the commanding officer, “May I speak to you?” He said, “Do you know Greek?
- 38
Aren’t you then the Egyptian who before these days stirred up to sedition and led out into the wilderness the four thousand men of the Assassins?”

But Paul said, “I am a Jew from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no insignificant city. I beg you, allow me to speak to the people.”

When he had given him permission, Paul, standing on the stairs, beckoned with his hand to the people. When there was a great silence, he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, saying,
Um gesto mal interpretado
Toda a prisão assenta numa suposição falsa. Tinham visto Trófimo, o efésio, com Paulo na cidade e supuseram que ele o levara ao templo (v.29), ainda que nunca o tivessem visto entrar.
Assim, o plano dos anciãos para mostrar que Paulo continua a guardar a lei fracassa por um boato sobre outra fronteira. O capítulo corta a cena com Paulo na escadaria, a pedir para falar.
