Atos 27
A viagem para a Itália começa sob o comando do centurião Júlio, com Lucas e Aristarco a bordo. Depois de uma travessia lenta, de ventos contrários, ao largo de Creta, a tripulação ignora o aviso de Paulo, faz-se ao mar e é apanhada pelo vento de tempestade Euroclidon. Dias sem sol nem estrelas apagam "toda a esperança de nos salvarmos". É o mais longo relato marítimo da Escritura, denso em pormenores náuticos: cingir o casco com cabos, lançar a carga e os aparelhos ao mar, sondar de vinte a quinze braças. Repare-se como o prisioneiro cativo se vai tornando aquele que ampara as 276 almas do navio.

Quando foi decidido que navegaríamos para a Itália, entregaram Paulo e alguns outros prisioneiros a um centurião chamado Júlio, da coorte Augusta.

Embarcando em um navio de Adramítio, que estava prestes a navegar para os lugares na costa da Ásia, nos fizemos ao mar, estando conosco Aristarco, um macedônio de Tessalônica.

No dia seguinte, chegamos a Sidom. Júlio tratou Paulo com bondade e deu-lhe permissão para ir aos seus amigos e receber cuidados.

Fazendo-nos ao mar dali, navegamos sob o abrigo de Chipre, porque os ventos eram contrários.

Tendo atravessado o mar ao longo da Cilícia e Panfília, chegamos a Mira, uma cidade da Lícia.

Ali o centurião encontrou um navio de Alexandria que navegava para a Itália, e nos fez embarcar nele.

Tendo navegado lentamente por muitos dias, e tendo chegado com dificuldade defronte de Cnido, não nos permitindo o vento ir mais longe, navegamos sob o abrigo de Creta, defronte de Salmona.

Navegando ao longo dela com dificuldade, chegamos a um certo lugar chamado Bons Portos, perto da cidade de Laseia.

Tendo passado muito tempo e sendo a viagem já perigosa, porque o Jejum já havia passado, Paulo os advertiu
- 10
e disse-lhes: “Senhores, percebo que a viagem será com dano e muita perda, não só da carga e do navio, mas também de nossas vidas.”

Mas o centurião deu mais crédito ao piloto e ao dono do navio do que àquelas coisas que foram ditas por Paulo.
- 12
Como o porto não era adequado para passar o inverno, a maioria aconselhou que se fizessem ao mar dali, para ver se de algum modo poderiam chegar a Fenice e invernar lá, que é um porto de Creta, voltado para o sudoeste e noroeste.

Quando o vento sul soprou suavemente, supondo que haviam alcançado o seu propósito, levantaram âncora e navegaram ao longo de Creta, perto da costa.

Mas não muito depois, um vento tempestuoso desceu da costa, o qual é chamado Euroclidão.

Quando o navio foi pego e não pôde resistir ao vento, cedemos a ele e fomos levados.
- 16
Correndo sob o abrigo de uma pequena ilha chamada Clauda, pudemos, com dificuldade, recolher o bote.
- 17
Depois de o terem içado, usaram cabos para ajudar a reforçar o navio. Temendo encalhar nos bancos de areia de Sirte, baixaram a âncora flutuante, e assim foram levados.

Como fomos violentamente açoitados pela tempestade, no dia seguinte começaram a jogar a carga ao mar.

No terceiro dia, lançaram fora a armação do navio com as próprias mãos.
- 20
Quando nem sol nem estrelas brilharam sobre nós por muitos dias, e não pequena tempestade nos pressionava, toda a esperança de sermos salvos foi finalmente tirada.

Havendo eles estado muito tempo sem comer, Paulo levantou-se no meio deles e disse: “Senhores, vocês deveriam ter me ouvido, e não ter partido de Creta e sofrido este dano e perda.

Agora eu os exorto a terem bom ânimo, pois não haverá perda de vida entre vocês, mas apenas do navio.

Pois esta noite esteve comigo um anjo, pertencente ao Deus de quem eu sou e a quem sirvo,
- 24
dizendo: 'Não tenha medo, Paulo. Você deve comparecer perante César. Eis que Deus lhe concedeu todos os que navegam com você.'

Portanto, senhores, tenham bom ânimo! Pois eu creio em Deus, que acontecerá exatamente como me foi dito.

Mas devemos encalhar em uma certa ilha.”

Mas quando chegou a décima quarta noite, sendo nós levados de um lado para outro no mar Adriático, por volta da meia-noite os marinheiros suspeitaram que estavam se aproximando de alguma terra.

Eles lançaram a sonda e encontraram vinte braças. Depois de um pouco de tempo, lançaram a sonda novamente, e encontraram quinze braças.

Temendo que encalhássemos em lugares rochosos, lançaram quatro âncoras da popa, e ansiavam pelo amanhecer.
- 30
Como os marinheiros tentavam fugir do navio e haviam baixado o bote ao mar, fingindo que iriam lançar âncoras da proa,

Paulo disse ao centurião e aos soldados: “A menos que estes permaneçam no navio, vocês não poderão ser salvos.”
- 32
Então os soldados cortaram as cordas do bote e o deixaram cair.
- 33
Enquanto o dia amanhecia, Paulo rogava a todos que comessem alguma coisa, dizendo: “Hoje é o décimo quarto dia que vocês esperam e continuam em jejum, não tendo comido nada.

Portanto, rogo-lhes que comam alguma coisa, pois isso é para a sua segurança; porque nem um fio de cabelo perecerá da cabeça de qualquer um de vocês.”

Tendo dito isso e tomado pão, deu graças a Deus na presença de todos; então o partiu e começou a comer.

Então todos se animaram, e eles também comeram.

Ao todo, éramos duzentas e setenta e seis almas no navio.
- 38
Quando comeram o suficiente, aliviaram o navio, lançando o trigo ao mar.
- 39
Quando amanheceu, não reconheceram a terra, mas notaram uma certa baía com uma praia, e decidiram tentar encalhar o navio nela.
- 40
Soltando as âncoras, deixaram-nas no mar, desamarrando ao mesmo tempo as cordas dos lemes. Içando a vela de proa ao vento, dirigiram-se para a praia.

Mas dando em um lugar onde dois mares se encontravam, encalharam o navio. A proa cravou-se e permaneceu imóvel, mas a popa começou a se despedaçar pela violência das ondas.

O conselho dos soldados foi matar os prisioneiros, para que nenhum deles saísse nadando e escapasse.

Mas o centurião, desejando salvar Paulo, impediu-os do seu propósito, e ordenou que aqueles que sabiam nadar se lançassem ao mar primeiro para ir em direção à terra;

e os demais os seguissem, alguns em tábuas e outros em outras coisas do navio. E assim todos escaparam a salvo para a terra.

When it was determined that we should sail for Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners to a centurion named Julius, of the Augustan band.

Embarking in a ship of Adramyttium, which was about to sail to places on the coast of Asia, we put to sea, Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica being with us.

The next day, we touched at Sidon. Julius treated Paul kindly and gave him permission to go to his friends and refresh himself.

Putting to sea from there, we sailed under the lee of Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.

When we had sailed across the sea which is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia.

There the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing for Italy, and he put us on board.

When we had sailed slowly many days, and had come with difficulty opposite Cnidus, the wind not allowing us further, we sailed under the lee of Crete, opposite Salmone.

With difficulty sailing along it we came to a certain place called Fair Havens, near the city of Lasea.

When much time had passed and the voyage was now dangerous because the Fast had now already gone by, Paul admonished them
- 10
and said to them, “Sirs, I perceive that the voyage will be with injury and much loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.”
- 11
But the centurion gave more heed to the master and to the owner of the ship than to those things which were spoken by Paul.
- 12
Because the haven was not suitable to winter in, the majority advised going to sea from there, if by any means they could reach Phoenix and winter there, which is a port of Crete, looking southwest and northwest.

When the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, they weighed anchor and sailed along Crete, close to shore.
- 14
But before long, a stormy wind beat down from shore, which is called Euroclydon.
- 15
When the ship was caught and couldn’t face the wind, we gave way to it and were driven along.
- 16
Running under the lee of a small island called Clauda, we were able, with difficulty, to secure the boat.
- 17
After they had hoisted it up, they used cables to help reinforce the ship. Fearing that they would run aground on the Syrtis sand bars, they lowered the sea anchor, and so were driven along.

As we labored exceedingly with the storm, the next day they began to throw things overboard.
- 19
On the third day, they threw out the ship’s tackle with their own hands.
- 20
When neither sun nor stars shone on us for many days, and no small storm pressed on us, all hope that we would be saved was now taken away.
- 21
When they had been long without food, Paul stood up in the middle of them and said, “Sirs, you should have listened to me, and not have set sail from Crete and have gotten this injury and loss.

Now I exhort you to cheer up, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.
- 23
For there stood by me this night an angel, belonging to the God whose I am and whom I serve,
- 24
saying, ‘Don’t be afraid, Paul. You must stand before Caesar. Behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.’

Therefore, sirs, cheer up! For I believe God, that it will be just as it has been spoken to me.
- 26
But we must run aground on a certain island.”
- 27
But when the fourteenth night had come, as we were driven back and forth in the Adriatic Sea, about midnight the sailors surmised that they were drawing near to some land.

They took soundings and found twenty fathoms. After a little while, they took soundings again, and found fifteen fathoms.

Fearing that we would run aground on rocky ground, they let go four anchors from the stern, and wished for daylight.
- 30
As the sailors were trying to flee out of the ship and had lowered the boat into the sea, pretending that they would lay out anchors from the bow,

Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, “Unless these stay in the ship, you can’t be saved.”
- 32
Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the boat and let it fall off.

While the day was coming on, Paul begged them all to take some food, saying, “Today is the fourteenth day that you wait and continue fasting, having taken nothing.

Therefore I beg you to take some food, for this is for your safety; for not a hair will perish from any of your heads.”
- 35
When he had said this and had taken bread, he gave thanks to God in the presence of all; then he broke it and began to eat.
- 36
Then they all cheered up, and they also took food.
- 37
In all, we were two hundred seventy-six souls on the ship.

When they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, throwing out the wheat into the sea.

When it was day, they didn’t recognize the land, but they noticed a certain bay with a beach, and they decided to try to drive the ship onto it.
- 40
Casting off the anchors, they left them in the sea, at the same time untying the rudder ropes. Hoisting up the foresail to the wind, they made for the beach.

But coming to a place where two seas met, they ran the vessel aground. The bow struck and remained immovable, but the stern began to break up by the violence of the waves.
- 42
The soldiers’ counsel was to kill the prisoners, so that none of them would swim out and escape.
- 43
But the centurion, desiring to save Paul, stopped them from their purpose, and commanded that those who could swim should throw themselves overboard first to go toward the land;
- 44
and the rest should follow, some on planks and some on other things from the ship. So they all escaped safely to the land.
O prisioneiro toma o comando
Paulo fala três vezes, de cada vez com mais autoridade. Primeiro um aviso desatendido; depois, após um anjo lhe dizer que há de comparecer perante César e que Deus lhe concedeu todos os que com ele navegam (v.24), a promessa de que só a nau se perderá. Por fim, trava a fuga dos marinheiros, exorta-os a comer e parte o pão diante de todos. No versículo 44, cada um chega a terra com vida, tal como ele anunciara.
