Atos 28
Os náufragos chegam a Malta, onde uma víbora se prende à mão de Paulo e os ilhéus passam de o chamarem assassino a chamarem-lhe deus quando ele a sacode sem ferimento. Cura o pai de Públio e muitos outros; ao fim de três meses de inverno, o grupo navega por Siracusa, Régio e Putéoli, e crentes romanos vêm recebê-los às Três Vendas. O livro encerra em Roma, em prisão domiciliária. Paulo reúne os líderes judeus, expõe o reino a partir de Moisés e dos profetas, e, ao dividirem-se eles, cita o aviso de Isaías sobre ouvidos que não hão de ouvir; depois volta-se para as nações.

Quando escapamos, então eles souberam que a ilha se chamava Malta.

Os nativos demonstraram uma bondade incomum para conosco; pois acenderam uma fogueira e acolheram a todos nós, por causa da chuva que caía e por causa do frio.

Mas quando Paulo ajuntou um feixe de gravetos e os colocou no fogo, uma víbora saiu por causa do calor e prendeu-se à sua mão.

Quando os nativos viram a criatura pendurada em sua mão, disseram uns aos outros: “Sem dúvida este homem é um assassino, a quem, embora tenha escapado do mar, a Justiça não permitiu que vivesse.”

No entanto, ele sacudiu a criatura no fogo e não sofreu nenhum mal.

Mas eles esperavam que ele fosse inchar ou cair morto de repente; porém, depois de observarem por muito tempo e verem que nada de mal lhe acontecia, mudaram de ideia e disseram que ele era um deus.

Ora, nas vizinhanças daquele lugar havia terras pertencentes ao homem principal da ilha, chamado Públio, o qual nos recebeu e nos hospedou cortesmente por três dias.

O pai de Públio estava de cama, doente com febre e disenteria. Paulo entrou para vê-lo, orou e, impondo as mãos sobre ele, o curou.

Tendo acontecido isso, os demais que tinham doenças na ilha também vieram e foram curados.

Eles também nos honraram com muitas honrarias; e quando embarcamos, colocaram a bordo as coisas de que precisávamos.

Após três meses, embarcamos em um navio de Alexandria que havia passado o inverno na ilha, cuja figura de proa era “Os Irmãos Gêmeos”.

Aportando em Siracusa, ficamos ali três dias.

Dali, contornando a costa, chegamos a Régio. Depois de um dia, levantou-se um vento sul, e no segundo dia chegamos a Putéoli,

onde encontramos irmãos, e fomos convidados a ficar com eles por sete dias. E assim fomos para Roma.

Dali os irmãos, quando ouviram falar de nós, vieram ao nosso encontro até a Praça de Ápio e as Três Vendas. Quando Paulo os viu, deu graças a Deus e sentiu-se encorajado.

Quando entramos em Roma, o centurião entregou os prisioneiros ao capitão da guarda, mas a Paulo foi permitido ficar morando por conta própria, com o soldado que o guardava.

Após três dias, Paulo convocou aqueles que eram os líderes dos judeus. Quando se reuniram, ele lhes disse: “Eu, irmãos, embora não tivesse feito nada contra o povo ou contra os costumes de nossos pais, ainda assim fui entregue como prisioneiro, de Jerusalém para as mãos dos romanos,

os quais, quando me interrogaram, queriam me libertar, porque não havia em mim motivo algum para morte.

Mas quando os judeus se opuseram a isso, fui obrigado a apelar para César, não que eu tivesse algo de que acusar a minha nação.
- 20
Por esta causa, portanto, pedi para ver e falar com vocês. Pois é por causa da esperança de Israel que estou preso com esta corrente.”

Eles lhe disseram: “Nós não recebemos cartas da Judeia a seu respeito, nem nenhum dos irmãos veio aqui relatar ou falar qualquer mal de você.

Mas desejamos ouvir de você o que você pensa. Pois, no que diz respeito a esta seita, é sabido por nós que em todo lugar falam contra ela.”

Tendo-lhe marcado um dia, muitas pessoas vieram a ele em seu alojamento. Ele lhes explicava, testificando sobre o Reino de Deus e persuadindo-os a respeito de Jesus, tanto pela lei de Moisés quanto pelos profetas, desde a manhã até a tarde.

Alguns creram nas coisas que foram ditas, e outros não creram.

Como não concordavam entre si, eles partiram, depois que Paulo disse uma palavra: “Bem falou o Espírito Santo aos nossos pais, por meio do profeta Isaías,

dizendo: ‘Vá a este povo e diga: ouvindo, vocês ouvirão, mas de modo algum entenderão. Vendo, vocês verão, mas de modo algum perceberão.

Pois o coração deste povo se tornou insensível. Seus ouvidos estão pesados para ouvir. Eles fecharam os seus olhos. Para que não vejam com os olhos, ouçam com os ouvidos, entendam com o coração, e se convertam, e então eu os cure.’

“Seja, portanto, conhecido por vocês que a salvação de Deus é enviada às nações, e elas ouvirão.”

Quando ele disse estas palavras, os judeus partiram, tendo uma grande discussão entre si.

Paulo permaneceu dois anos inteiros em sua própria casa alugada e recebia a todos os que vinham a ele,

pregando o Reino de Deus e ensinando as coisas a respeito do Senhor Jesus Cristo com toda a ousadia, sem impedimento.

When we had escaped, then they learned that the island was called Malta.

The natives showed us uncommon kindness; for they kindled a fire and received us all, because of the present rain and because of the cold.

But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened on his hand.

When the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped from the sea, yet Justice has not allowed to live.”

However he shook off the creature into the fire, and wasn’t harmed.
- 6
But they expected that he would have swollen or fallen down dead suddenly, but when they watched for a long time and saw nothing bad happen to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.

Now in the neighborhood of that place were lands belonging to the chief man of the island, named Publius, who received us and courteously entertained us for three days.
- 8
The father of Publius lay sick of fever and dysentery. Paul entered in to him, prayed, and laying his hands on him, healed him.
- 9
Then when this was done, the rest also who had diseases in the island came and were cured.
- 10
They also honored us with many honors; and when we sailed, they put on board the things that we needed.
- 11
After three months, we set sail in a ship of Alexandria which had wintered in the island, whose figurehead was “The Twin Brothers.”

Touching at Syracuse, we stayed there three days.

From there we circled around and arrived at Rhegium. After one day, a south wind sprang up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli,
- 14
where we found brothers, and were entreated to stay with them for seven days. So we came to Rome.

From there the brothers, when they heard of us, came to meet us as far as The Market of Appius and The Three Taverns. When Paul saw them, he thanked God and took courage.

When we entered into Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard, but Paul was allowed to stay by himself with the soldier who guarded him.

After three days Paul called together those who were the leaders of the Jews. When they had come together, he said to them, “I, brothers, though I had done nothing against the people or the customs of our fathers, still was delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans,

who, when they had examined me, desired to set me free, because there was no cause of death in me.
- 19
But when the Jews spoke against it, I was constrained to appeal to Caesar, not that I had anything about which to accuse my nation.
- 20
For this cause therefore I asked to see you and to speak with you. For because of the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.”

They said to him, “We neither received letters from Judea concerning you, nor did any of the brothers come here and report or speak any evil of you.
- 22
But we desire to hear from you what you think. For, as concerning this sect, it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against.”
- 23
When they had appointed him a day, many people came to him at his lodging. He explained to them, testifying about God’s Kingdom, and persuading them concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses and from the prophets, from morning until evening.

Some believed the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved.
- 25
When they didn’t agree among themselves, they departed after Paul had spoken one message: “The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah the prophet to our fathers,

saying, ‘Go to this people and say, in hearing, you will hear, but will in no way understand. In seeing, you will see, but will in no way perceive.
- 27
For this people’s heart has grown callous. Their ears are dull of hearing. Their eyes they have closed. Lest they should see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and would turn again, then I would heal them.’

“Be it known therefore to you that the salvation of God is sent to the nations, and they will listen.”

When he had said these words, the Jews departed, having a great dispute among themselves.

Paul stayed two whole years in his own rented house and received all who were coming to him,
- 31
preaching God’s Kingdom and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness, without hindrance.
Um final em aberto
Atos termina sem veredicto sobre a apelação de Paulo. A imagem final fica deliberadamente em aberto: dois anos inteiros na sua casa alugada, a pregar o Reino de Deus a todos os que o procuravam, "com toda a confiança, sem impedimento" (v.31). O evangelho chegou à capital do império tal como prometera 1:8, até aos confins da terra, e esta última palavra, sem estorvo, deixa a missão ainda a avançar para lá da página.
