Atos 7

Perante apenas a pergunta "Porventura é assim?", Estêvão responde com um amplo percurso pela história de Israel: Abraão, José, Moisés, o tabernáculo, o templo de Salomão. Parece uma defesa, mas avança para uma acusação contra os próprios juízes. O eixo é um tema que se repete: o povo rejeitava os seus libertadores. José foi vendido; a Moisés afastaram-no com "Quem te pôs por governante?" (v.27). Repare como ele chega ao templo de Salomão só para dizer que o Altíssimo não habita em templos feitos por mãos (v.48).

O sumo sacerdote disse: “Estas coisas são mesmo assim?”

Ele disse: “Irmãos e pais, ouçam. O Deus da glória apareceu a nosso pai Abraão quando ele estava na Mesopotâmia, antes de morar em Harã,

e lhe disse: ‘Saia da sua terra e do meio dos seus parentes, e vá para uma terra que eu lhe mostrarei.’
4
Então ele saiu da terra dos caldeus e morou em Harã. Dali, depois que seu pai morreu, Deus o trouxe para esta terra onde vocês agora vivem.
5
Ele não lhe deu herança nela, não, nem mesmo o espaço de um pé. Mas prometeu que a daria como propriedade a ele e à sua descendência depois dele, quando ele ainda não tinha filhos.

Deus falou desta maneira: que a sua descendência viveria como estrangeira em terra alheia, e que eles seriam escravizados e maltratados por quatrocentos anos.

‘Eu julgarei a nação à qual eles estarão sujeitos’, disse Deus, ‘e depois disso eles sairão e me servirão neste lugar.’

Ele lhe deu a aliança da circuncisão. Assim Abraão gerou a Isaque, e o circuncidou no oitavo dia. Isaque gerou a Jacó, e Jacó gerou os doze patriarcas.

“Os patriarcas, movidos de inveja contra José, o venderam para o Egito. Mas Deus estava com ele
10
e o livrou de todas as suas aflições, e lhe deu favor e sabedoria diante do Faraó, rei do Egito. Este o constituiu governador sobre o Egito e sobre toda a sua casa.
11
Então veio uma fome sobre toda a terra do Egito e de Canaã, e grande aflição. Nossos pais não encontravam alimento.
12
Mas quando Jacó ouviu que havia trigo no Egito, enviou nossos pais pela primeira vez.
13
Na segunda vez, José se deu a conhecer aos seus irmãos, e a família de José foi revelada ao Faraó.
14
José mandou chamar a Jacó, seu pai, e a todos os seus parentes, setenta e cinco pessoas.
15
Jacó desceu ao Egito e morreu, ele e nossos pais;
16
e eles foram levados de volta para Siquém e colocados no túmulo que Abraão havia comprado por certo preço em prata dos filhos de Hamor, em Siquém.
17
“Mas, conforme se aproximava o tempo da promessa que Deus havia jurado a Abraão, o povo cresceu e se multiplicou no Egito,
18
até que se levantou um rei diferente, que não conhecia a José.
19
Este rei se aproveitou da nossa raça e maltratou os nossos pais, forçando-os a abandonar os seus recém-nascidos, para que não sobrevivessem.
20
Naquele tempo nasceu Moisés, e ele era muito formoso diante de Deus. Ele foi criado por três meses na casa de seu pai.
21
Quando foi abandonado, a filha do Faraó o recolheu e o criou como seu próprio filho.
22
Moisés foi instruído em toda a sabedoria dos egípcios. Ele era poderoso em suas palavras e obras.
23
Mas, quando completou quarenta anos, veio ao seu coração o desejo de visitar os seus irmãos, os filhos de Israel.
24
Vendo um deles sofrer injustiça, ele o defendeu e vingou o oprimido, golpeando o egípcio.
25
Ele supunha que seus irmãos entenderiam que Deus, por sua mão, lhes estava dando livramento; mas eles não entenderam.
26
“No dia seguinte, ele apareceu a eles enquanto brigavam, e tentou reconciliá-los em paz, dizendo: ‘Senhores, vocês são irmãos. Por que fazem mal uns aos outros?’
27
Mas aquele que maltratava o seu próximo o empurrou, dizendo: ‘Quem o constituiu governante e juiz sobre nós?
28
Você quer me matar como matou o egípcio ontem?’
29
Ao ouvir isso, Moisés fugiu e tornou-se estrangeiro na terra de Midiã, onde gerou dois filhos.
30
“Passados quarenta anos, um anjo do Senhor apareceu a ele no deserto do monte Sinai, numa chama de fogo em uma sarça.
31
Quando Moisés viu isso, maravilhou-se com a visão. Ao se aproximar para observar, a voz do Senhor veio a ele:
32
‘Eu sou o Deus de seus pais: o Deus de Abraão, o Deus de Isaque e o Deus de Jacó.’ Moisés tremeu e não ousava olhar.
33
O Senhor lhe disse: ‘Tire as sandálias dos pés, pois o lugar onde você está é terra santa.
34
Eu certamente vi a aflição do meu povo que está no Egito, e ouvi o seu gemido. Eu desci para livrá-los. Agora venha, eu o enviarei ao Egito.’
35
“A este Moisés, a quem eles rejeitaram, dizendo: ‘Quem o constituiu governante e juiz?’ — a este Deus enviou como governante e libertador, pela mão do anjo que lhe apareceu na sarça.
36
Este homem os tirou de lá, tendo feito maravilhas e sinais no Egito, no mar Vermelho e no deserto por quarenta anos.
37
Este é aquele Moisés que disse aos filhos de Israel: ‘O Senhor, nosso Deus, levantará para vocês um profeta dentre os seus irmãos, semelhante a mim.’
38
Este é o que esteve na congregação no deserto, com o anjo que lhe falava no monte Sinai, e com os nossos pais; o qual recebeu revelações vivas para nos entregar.
39
A ele nossos pais não quiseram obedecer; pelo contrário, o rejeitaram e, em seus corações, voltaram para o Egito,
40
dizendo a Arão: ‘Faça-nos deuses que vão adiante de nós; pois, quanto a este Moisés que nos tirou da terra do Egito, não sabemos o que aconteceu com ele.’
41
Naqueles dias, eles fizeram um bezerro, ofereceram sacrifício ao ídolo e se alegraram com as obras de suas mãos.
42
Mas Deus se afastou e os entregou para servirem ao exército do céu, como está escrito no livro dos profetas: ‘Por acaso vocês me ofereceram animais mortos e sacrifícios durante quarenta anos no deserto, ó casa de Israel?
43
Vocês levantaram o tabernáculo de Moloque, e a estrela do seu deus Renfã, as imagens que vocês fizeram para adorar; por isso eu os transportarei além da Babilônia.’
44
“Nossos pais tinham o tabernáculo do testemunho no deserto, assim como aquele que falou a Moisés lhe ordenou que o fizesse, segundo o modelo que ele tinha visto.
45
O qual também nossos pais, por sua vez, trouxeram com Josué quando tomaram posse das nações que Deus expulsou de diante da face de nossos pais, até os dias de Davi.
46
Este encontrou favor diante de Deus e pediu para encontrar uma habitação para o Deus de Jacó.
47
Mas foi Salomão quem lhe construiu uma casa.
48
No entanto, o Altíssimo não habita em templos feitos por mãos humanas, como diz o profeta:
49
‘o céu é o meu trono, e a terra é o estrado para os meus pés. Que tipo de casa vocês me edificarão?’ diz o Senhor. ‘Ou qual é o lugar do meu repouso?
50
Não foi a minha mão que fez todas estas coisas?’
51
“Homens de dura cerviz, e incircuncisos de coração e de ouvidos, vocês sempre resistem ao Espírito Santo! Assim como fizeram os seus pais, vocês também fazem.
52
Qual dos profetas os seus pais não perseguiram? Eles mataram aqueles que anunciaram antecipadamente a vinda do Justo, do qual vocês agora se tornaram traidores e assassinos.
53
Vocês receberam a lei como foi ordenada por anjos, e não a guardaram!”
54
Ao ouvirem estas coisas, eles se enfureceram em seus corações e rangeram os dentes contra ele.
55
Mas ele, estando cheio do Espírito Santo, olhou fixamente para o céu e viu a glória de Deus, e Jesus em pé à direita de Deus,
56
e disse: “Eis que vejo os céus abertos e o Filho do Homem em pé à direita de Deus!”
57
Mas eles gritaram em alta voz, taparam os ouvidos e avançaram contra ele de comum acordo.
58
Eles o lançaram fora da cidade e o apedrejaram. As testemunhas colocaram as suas vestes aos pés de um jovem chamado Saulo.
59
Eles apedrejavam Estêvão enquanto ele clamava, dizendo: “Senhor Jesus, recebe o meu espírito!”
60
Ele se ajoelhou e clamou em alta voz: “Senhor, não lhes imputes este pecado!” Tendo dito isso, ele adormeceu.

The high priest said, “Are these things so?”

He said, “Brothers and fathers, listen. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,

and said to him, ‘Get out of your land and away from your relatives, and come into a land which I will show you.’
4
Then he came out of the land of the Chaldaeans and lived in Haran. From there, when his father was dead, God moved him into this land where you are now living.
5
He gave him no inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on. He promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his offspring after him, when he still had no child.
6
God spoke in this way: that his offspring would live as aliens in a strange land, and that they would be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years.
7
‘I will judge the nation to which they will be in bondage,’ said God, ‘and after that they will come out and serve me in this place.’
8
He gave him the covenant of circumcision. So Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day. Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.
9
“The patriarchs, moved with jealousy against Joseph, sold him into Egypt. God was with him
10
and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt. He made him governor over Egypt and all his house.
11
Now a famine came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction. Our fathers found no food.
12
But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers the first time.
13
On the second time Joseph was made known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family was revealed to Pharaoh.
14
Joseph sent and summoned Jacob his father and all his relatives, seventy-five souls.
15
Jacob went down into Egypt and he died, himself and our fathers;
16
and they were brought back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a price in silver from the children of Hamor of Shechem.
17
“But as the time of the promise came close which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,
18
until there arose a different king who didn’t know Joseph.
19
The same took advantage of our race and mistreated our fathers, and forced them to abandon their babies, so that they wouldn’t stay alive.
20
At that time Moses was born, and was exceedingly handsome to God. He was nourished three months in his father’s house.
21
When he was abandoned, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up and reared him as her own son.
22
Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians. He was mighty in his words and works.
23
But when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.
24
Seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him and avenged him who was oppressed, striking the Egyptian.
25
He supposed that his brothers understood that God, by his hand, was giving them deliverance; but they didn’t understand.
26
“The day following, he appeared to them as they fought, and urged them to be at peace again, saying, ‘Sirs, you are brothers. Why do you wrong one another?’
27
But he who did his neighbor wrong pushed him away, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?
28
Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’
29
Moses fled at this saying, and became a stranger in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.
30
“When forty years were fulfilled, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.
31
When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight. As he came close to see, the voice of the Lord came to him,
32
‘I am the God of your fathers: the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ Moses trembled and dared not look.
33
The Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you stand is holy ground.
34
I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their groaning. I have come down to deliver them. Now come, I will send you into Egypt.’
35
“This Moses whom they refused, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—God has sent him as both a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
36
This man led them out, having worked wonders and signs in Egypt, in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years.
37
This is that Moses who said to the children of Israel, ‘The Lord our God will raise up a prophet for you from among your brothers, like me.’
38
This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness with the angel that spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, who received living revelations to give to us,
39
to whom our fathers wouldn’t be obedient, but rejected him and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,
40
saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods that will go before us, for as for this Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.’
41
They made a calf in those days, and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their hands.
42
But God turned away and gave them up to serve the army of the sky, as it is written in the book of the prophets, ‘Did you offer to me slain animals and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
43
You took up the tabernacle of Moloch, the star of your god Rephan, the figures which you made to worship, so I will carry you away beyond Babylon.’
44
“Our fathers had the tabernacle of the testimony in the wilderness, even as he who spoke to Moses commanded him to make it according to the pattern that he had seen;
45
which also our fathers, in their turn, brought in with Joshua when they entered into the possession of the nations whom God drove out before the face of our fathers to the days of David,
46
who found favor in the sight of God, and asked to find a habitation for the God of Jacob.
47
But Solomon built him a house.
48
However, the Most High doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says,
49
‘heaven is my throne, and the earth a footstool for my feet. What kind of house will you build me?’ says the Lord. ‘Or what is the place of my rest?
50
Didn’t my hand make all these things?’
51
“You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit! As your fathers did, so you do.
52
Which of the prophets didn’t your fathers persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, of whom you have now become betrayers and murderers.
53
You received the law as it was ordained by angels, and didn’t keep it!”
54
Now when they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.
55
But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up steadfastly into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
56
and said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”
57
But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears, then rushed at him with one accord.
58
They threw him out of the city and stoned him. The witnesses placed their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.
59
They stoned Stephen as he called out, saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”
60
He kneeled down and cried with a loud voice, “Lord, don’t hold this sin against them!” When he had said this, he fell asleep.

A viragem que o leva à morte

Até ao v.50 é história; depois Estêvão volta-se contra o conselho: "de dura cerviz", que resistem ao Espírito, traidores e homicidas do Justo (v.51-52). O padrão que traçara torna-se sentença sobre os homens à sua frente.

A morte dele espelha as palavras de Jesus na cruz: entrega o espírito e pede perdão pelos algozes (v.59-60). E as testemunhas deixam as suas roupas aos pés de Saulo, abrindo o fio que Atos seguirá até ao fim.
