O rei Nabucodonosor, a todos os povos, nações e línguas que habitam em toda a terra: Paz lhes seja multiplicada.

Pareceu-me bem declarar os sinais e maravilhas que o Deus Altíssimo realizou em meu favor.
- 3
Quão grandes são os seus sinais! Quão poderosas são as suas maravilhas! O seu reino é um reino eterno. O seu domínio é de geração em geração.

Eu, Nabucodonosor, estava tranquilo em minha casa e próspero em meu palácio.
- 5
Tive um sonho que me assustou; e os pensamentos em minha cama e as visões da minha mente me perturbaram.
- 6
Por isso, decretei que trouxessem à minha presença todos os sábios da Babilônia, para que me dessem a conhecer a interpretação do sonho.
- 7
Então entraram os magos, os encantadores, os caldeus e os adivinhos; e eu lhes contei o sonho, mas eles não me deram a conhecer a sua interpretação.

Por fim, Daniel entrou à minha presença, cujo nome era Beltessazar, segundo o nome do meu deus, e em quem há o espírito dos deuses santos. Eu contei o sonho diante dele, dizendo:

“Beltessazar, chefe dos magos, como sei que o espírito dos deuses santos está em você e nenhum mistério o perturba, diga-me as visões do sonho que tive e a sua interpretação.
- 10
Estas foram as visões da minha mente na minha cama: Eu olhei, e eis uma árvore no meio da terra; e a sua altura era imensa.
- 11
A árvore cresceu e se tornou forte. A sua altura chegava até o céu, e ela era visível até os confins de toda a terra.
- 12
Suas folhas eram belas, e o seu fruto abundante, e nela havia alimento para todos. Os animais do campo encontravam sombra debaixo dela, e as aves do céu habitavam em seus ramos, e toda criatura se alimentava dela.

“Eu via nas visões da minha mente na minha cama, e eis que um vigilante santo desceu do céu.
- 14
Ele clamou em alta voz e disse o seguinte: 'Derrubem a árvore e cortem os seus ramos! Sacudam as suas folhas e espalhem os seus frutos! Afugentem os animais debaixo dela e as aves dos seus ramos.
- 15
Contudo, deixem o toco com as suas raízes na terra, preso com cadeias de ferro e de bronze, na relva tenra do campo; e seja ele molhado com o orvalho do céu. Que a sua porção seja com os animais na erva da terra.

Que o seu coração seja mudado, deixando de ser humano, e lhe seja dado um coração de animal. E passem sobre ele sete tempos.

“'A sentença é por decreto dos vigilantes, e a exigência pela palavra dos santos, com o propósito de que os vivos saibam que o Altíssimo domina sobre o reino dos homens, e o dá a quem ele quer, e estabelece sobre ele o mais humilde dos homens.'
- 18
“Este é o sonho que eu, o rei Nabucodonosor, tive; e você, Beltessazar, declare a interpretação, porque todos os sábios do meu reino não são capazes de me dar a conhecer a interpretação; mas você é capaz, pois o espírito dos deuses santos está em você.”

Então Daniel, cujo nome era Beltessazar, ficou emudecido por um momento, e os seus pensamentos o perturbaram. O rei respondeu: “Beltessazar, não deixe que o sonho ou a sua interpretação o perturbe.” Beltessazar respondeu: “Meu senhor, que o sonho seja para aqueles que o odeiam, e a sua interpretação para os seus adversários.

A árvore que você viu, que cresceu e se tornou forte, cuja altura chegava até o céu e era visível por toda a terra;

cujas folhas eram belas e o seu fruto abundante, e nela havia alimento para todos; debaixo da qual viviam os animais do campo, e em cujos ramos as aves do céu tinham a sua habitação —

é você, ó rei, que cresceu e se tornou forte; pois a sua grandeza cresceu e chega até o céu, e o seu domínio até os confins da terra.

“E quanto ao fato de o rei ter visto um vigilante santo descendo do céu e dizendo: 'Derrubem a árvore e destruam-na; contudo, deixem o toco com as suas raízes na terra, preso com cadeias de ferro e de bronze, na relva tenra do campo, e seja ele molhado com o orvalho do céu. Que a sua porção seja com os animais do campo, até que passem sobre ele sete tempos.'

“Esta é a interpretação, ó rei, e é o decreto do Altíssimo, que veio sobre o meu senhor, o rei:
- 25
Você será expulso do meio dos homens e a sua morada será com os animais do campo. Você será forçado a comer capim como os bois, e será molhado com o orvalho do céu, e sete tempos passarão sobre você, até que reconheça que o Altíssimo domina sobre o reino dos homens, e o dá a quem ele quer.

E quanto à ordem para deixar o toco com as raízes da árvore, o seu reino lhe será garantido depois que você reconhecer que os Céus dominam.
- 27
Portanto, ó rei, que o meu conselho lhe seja aceitável: rompa com os seus pecados praticando a justiça, e com as suas iniquidades demonstrando misericórdia aos pobres. Talvez haja um prolongamento da sua tranquilidade.”

Tudo isso sobreveio ao rei Nabucodonosor.

Ao fim de doze meses, ele estava caminhando no palácio real da Babilônia.
- 30
O rei falou e disse: “Não é esta a grande Babilônia, que eu construí para a residência real, pela força do meu poder e para a glória da minha majestade?”
- 31
Enquanto a palavra ainda estava na boca do rei, veio uma voz do céu, dizendo: “Ó rei Nabucodonosor, a você é declarado: 'O reino foi tirado de você.
- 32
Você será expulso do meio dos homens, e a sua morada será com os animais do campo. Você será forçado a comer capim como os bois. Sete tempos passarão sobre você, até que reconheça que o Altíssimo domina sobre o reino dos homens, e o dá a quem ele quer.'”

Na mesma hora, isso se cumpriu em Nabucodonosor. Ele foi expulso do meio dos homens e comeu capim como os bois; e o seu corpo foi molhado com o orvalho do céu, até que o seu cabelo cresceu como as penas das águias, e as suas unhas como as garras das aves.

Ao fim daqueles dias, eu, Nabucodonosor, levantei os meus olhos ao céu, e o meu entendimento voltou a mim; e eu abençoei o Altíssimo, e louvei e honrei aquele que vive para sempre, pois o seu domínio é um domínio eterno, e o seu reino é de geração em geração.

Todos os habitantes da terra são considerados como nada; e ele age segundo a sua vontade no exército do céu, e entre os habitantes da terra; e ninguém pode deter a sua mão, ou questioná-lo: “O que estás fazendo?”

Naquele mesmo tempo, o meu entendimento voltou a mim; e para a glória do meu reino, a minha majestade e o meu resplendor voltaram a mim. Os meus conselheiros e os meus nobres me procuraram; e eu fui restabelecido no meu reino, e uma grandeza extraordinária me foi acrescentada.

Agora eu, Nabucodonosor, louvo, exalto e honro o Rei do céu; porque todas as suas obras são verdade, e os seus caminhos são justiça; e ele é poderoso para humilhar os que andam na soberba.

Nebuchadnezzar the king, to all the peoples, nations, and languages, who dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you.

It has seemed good to me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God has worked toward me.
- 3
How great are his signs! How mighty are his wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. His dominion is from generation to generation.
- 4
I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace.
- 5
I saw a dream which made me afraid; and the thoughts on my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.
- 6
Therefore I made a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream.
- 7
Then the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers came in; and I told them the dream, but they didn’t make known to me its interpretation.
- 8
But at last, Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods. I told the dream before him, saying,

“Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you and no secret troubles you, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and its interpretation.

These were the visions of my head on my bed: I saw, and behold, a tree in the middle of the earth; and its height was great.
- 11
The tree grew and was strong. Its height reached to the sky and its sight to the end of all the earth.
- 12
Its leaves were beautiful, and it had much fruit, and in it was food for all. The animals of the field had shade under it, and the birds of the sky lived in its branches, and all flesh was fed from it.
- 13
“I saw in the visions of my head on my bed, and behold, a holy watcher came down from the sky.
- 14
He cried aloud and said this: ‘Cut down the tree, and cut off its branches! Shake off its leaves and scatter its fruit! Let the animals get away from under it and the birds from its branches.
- 15
Nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and bronze, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of the sky. Let his portion be with the animals in the grass of the earth.
- 16
Let his heart be changed from man’s, and let an animal’s heart be given to him. Then let seven times pass over him.
- 17
“‘The sentence is by the decree of the watchers and the demand by the word of the holy ones, to the intent that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will, and sets up over it the lowest of men.’
- 18
“This dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, have seen; and you, Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation, because all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation; but you are able, for the spirit of the holy gods is in you.”

Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was stricken mute for a while, and his thoughts troubled him. The king answered, “Belteshazzar, don’t let the dream or the interpretation, trouble you.” Belteshazzar answered, “My lord, may the dream be for those who hate you, and its interpretation to your adversaries.

The tree that you saw, which grew and was strong, whose height reached to the sky and its sight to all the earth;

whose leaves were beautiful and its fruit plentiful, and in it was food for all; under which the animals of the field lived, and on whose branches the birds of the sky had their habitation—
- 22
it is you, O king, that have grown and become strong; for your greatness has grown, and reaches to the sky, and your dominion to the end of the earth.

“Whereas the king saw a holy watcher coming down from the sky and saying, ‘Cut down the tree, and destroy it; nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and bronze, in the tender grass of the field, and let it be wet with the dew of the sky. Let his portion be with the animals of the field, until seven times pass over him.’

“This is the interpretation, O king, and it is the decree of the Most High, which has come on my lord the king:
- 25
You will be driven from men and your dwelling shall be with the animals of the field. You will be made to eat grass as oxen, and will be wet with the dew of the sky, and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will.

Whereas it was commanded to leave the stump of the roots of the tree, your kingdom shall be sure to you after you know that Heaven rules.
- 27
Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you, and break off your sins by righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor. Perhaps there may be a lengthening of your tranquility.”

All this came on the King Nebuchadnezzar.
- 29
At the end of twelve months he was walking in the royal palace of Babylon.

The king spoke and said, “Is not this great Babylon, which I have built for the royal dwelling place by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?”
- 31
While the word was in the king’s mouth, a voice came from the sky, saying, “O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: ‘The kingdom has departed from you.
- 32
You shall be driven from men, and your dwelling shall be with the animals of the field. You shall be made to eat grass like oxen. Seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will.’”

This was fulfilled the same hour on Nebuchadnezzar. He was driven from men and ate grass like oxen; and his body was wet with the dew of the sky until his hair had grown like eagles’ feathers, and his nails like birds’ claws.

At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me; and I blessed the Most High, and I praised and honored him who lives forever, for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom from generation to generation.

All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and he does according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and no one can stop his hand, or ask him, “What are you doing?”
- 36
At the same time my understanding returned to me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and brightness returned to me. My counselors and my lords sought me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent greatness was added to me.
- 37
Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven; for all his works are truth, and his ways justice; and those who walk in pride he is able to abase.
