Gênesis 18
Três visitantes detêm-se junto aos carvalhos de Manre no calor do dia, e Abraão mata um bezerro para os servir. À refeição chega uma promessa com data: Sara, já idosa, terá um filho no ano seguinte. Ela ri-se às escondidas, e o visitante repara nisso. Depois o SENHOR volta-se para Sodoma, e Abraão regateia de cinquenta justos até dez. Repare como a hospitalidade à porta da tenda enquadra tanto o anúncio como uma pergunta sobre a justiça.

O SENHOR apareceu a ele junto aos carvalhos de Manre, enquanto ele estava sentado à porta da tenda, no calor do dia.

Ele levantou os olhos e olhou, e viu que três homens estavam em pé perto dele. Quando os viu, correu da porta da tenda ao encontro deles e prostrou-se por terra,

e disse: “Meu senhor, se agora encontrei favor aos seus olhos, por favor, não vá embora do seu servo.
- 4
Que se traga agora um pouco de água; lavem os seus pés e descansem debaixo da árvore.
- 5
Vou buscar um pedaço de pão para que vocês possam revigorar o coração. Depois disso, poderão seguir o seu caminho, agora que chegaram ao seu servo.” Eles disseram: “Muito bem, faça como você disse.”

Abraão apressou-se em ir à tenda, até Sara, e disse: “Prepare depressa três seás de farinha fina, amasse-a e faça bolos.”

Abraão correu ao rebanho, pegou um bezerro tenro e bom, e o deu ao servo. Este se apressou em prepará-lo.
- 8
Ele pegou manteiga, leite e o bezerro que havia preparado, e colocou diante deles. Ele ficou em pé junto a eles debaixo da árvore, e eles comeram.

Eles lhe perguntaram: “Onde está Sara, sua mulher?” Ele disse: “Ali, na tenda.”
- 10
Ele disse: “Certamente voltarei a você por esta época no ano que vem; e eis que Sara, sua mulher, terá um filho.” Sara escutava à porta da tenda, que estava atrás dele.

Ora, Abraão e Sara eram velhos, de idade bem avançada. Sara já havia passado da idade de ter filhos.
- 12
Sara riu consigo mesma, dizendo: “Depois de envelhecer, terei eu prazer, sendo o meu senhor também velho?”
- 13
O SENHOR disse a Abraão: “Por que Sara riu, dizendo: ‘Darei eu realmente à luz um filho, sendo velha?’
- 14
Existe alguma coisa difícil demais para o SENHOR? No tempo determinado eu voltarei a você, por esta mesma época, e Sara terá um filho.”
- 15
Então Sara negou, dizendo: “Eu não ri”, pois teve medo. Ele disse: “Não, você riu sim.”
- 16
Os homens se levantaram dali e olharam em direção a Sodoma. Abraão foi com eles para acompanhá-los em seu caminho.
- 17
O SENHOR disse: “Ocultarei de Abraão o que estou para fazer,
- 18
visto que Abraão certamente se tornará uma nação grande e poderosa, e nele serão abençoadas todas as nações da terra?
- 19
Pois eu o conheci, para que ele ordene a seus filhos e a sua casa depois dele, a fim de que guardem o caminho do SENHOR, para praticar a retidão e a justiça; para que o SENHOR traga sobre Abraão o que falou a respeito dele.”

O SENHOR disse: “Como o clamor de Sodoma e Gomorra é grande, e como o seu pecado é muito grave,
- 21
descerei agora e verei se as suas obras são tão más quanto os relatos que chegaram a mim. Se não, eu saberei.”
- 22
Os homens se viraram dali e foram em direção a Sodoma, mas Abraão permaneceu em pé diante do SENHOR.
- 23
Abraão se aproximou e disse: “Você destruirá o justo com o ímpio?
- 24
E se houver cinquenta justos na cidade? Você a destruirá e não poupará o lugar por causa dos cinquenta justos que nele estão?
- 25
Longe de você fazer tal coisa, matar o justo com o ímpio, de modo que o justo seja tratado como o ímpio. Longe de você. Não deveria o Juiz de toda a terra fazer o que é certo?”

O SENHOR disse: “Se eu encontrar em Sodoma cinquenta justos dentro da cidade, então pouparei todo o lugar por amor a eles.”
- 27
Abraão respondeu: “Eis que agora me atrevi a falar ao Senhor, embora eu seja pó e cinza.
- 28
E se faltarem cinco dos cinquenta justos? Você destruirá toda a cidade por falta de cinco?” Ele disse: “Não a destruirei se eu encontrar ali quarenta e cinco.”

Ele lhe falou mais uma vez e disse: “E se forem encontrados ali quarenta?” Ele disse: “Não o farei por amor aos quarenta.”

Ele disse: “Ah, que o Senhor não se ire, e eu falarei. E se forem encontrados ali trinta?” Ele disse: “Não o farei se eu encontrar ali trinta.”

Ele disse: “Eis que agora me atrevi a falar ao Senhor. E se forem encontrados ali vinte?” Ele disse: “Não a destruirei por amor aos vinte.”

Ele disse: “Ah, que o Senhor não se ire, e eu falarei só mais esta vez. E se forem encontrados ali dez?” Ele disse: “Não a destruirei por amor aos dez.”

O SENHOR seguiu o seu caminho assim que terminou de falar com Abraão, e Abraão voltou para o seu lugar.

The LORD appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day.
- 2
He lifted up his eyes and looked, and saw that three men stood near him. When he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself to the earth,

and said, “My lord, if now I have found favor in your sight, please don’t go away from your servant.
- 4
Now let a little water be fetched, wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.
- 5
I will get a piece of bread so you can refresh your heart. After that you may go your way, now that you have come to your servant.” They said, “Very well, do as you have said.”

Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and said, “Quickly prepare three seahs of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes.”
- 7
Abraham ran to the herd, and fetched a tender and good calf, and gave it to the servant. He hurried to dress it.
- 8
He took butter, milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them. He stood by them under the tree, and they ate.
- 9
They asked him, “Where is Sarah, your wife?” He said, “There, in the tent.”
- 10
He said, “I will certainly return to you at about this time next year; and behold, Sarah your wife will have a son.” Sarah heard in the tent door, which was behind him.
- 11
Now Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in age. Sarah had passed the age of childbearing.
- 12
Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old will I have pleasure, my lord being old also?”
- 13
The LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Will I really bear a child when I am old?’
- 14
Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the set time I will return to you, when the season comes around, and Sarah will have a son.”
- 15
Then Sarah denied it, saying, “I didn’t laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”
- 16
The men rose up from there, and looked toward Sodom. Abraham went with them to see them on their way.
- 17
The LORD said, “Will I hide from Abraham what I do,
- 18
since Abraham will surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed in him?
- 19
For I have known him, to the end that he may command his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of the LORD, to do righteousness and justice; to the end that the LORD may bring on Abraham that which he has spoken of him.”
- 20
The LORD said, “Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous,
- 21
I will go down now, and see whether their deeds are as bad as the reports which have come to me. If not, I will know.”
- 22
The men turned from there, and went toward Sodom, but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.
- 23
Abraham came near, and said, “Will you consume the righteous with the wicked?
- 24
What if there are fifty righteous within the city? Will you consume and not spare the place for the fifty righteous who are in it?
- 25
May it be far from you to do things like that, to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be like the wicked. May that be far from you. Shouldn’t the Judge of all the earth do right?”
- 26
The LORD said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place for their sake.”
- 27
Abraham answered, “See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord, although I am dust and ashes.
- 28
What if there will lack five of the fifty righteous? Will you destroy all the city for lack of five?” He said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.”
- 29
He spoke to him yet again, and said, “What if there are forty found there?” He said, “I will not do it for the forty’s sake.”
- 30
He said, “Oh don’t let the Lord be angry, and I will speak. What if there are thirty found there?” He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”
- 31
He said, “See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord. What if there are twenty found there?” He said, “I will not destroy it for the twenty’s sake.”
- 32
He said, “Oh don’t let the Lord be angry, and I will speak just once more. What if ten are found there?” He said, “I will not destroy it for the ten’s sake.”
- 33
The LORD went his way as soon as he had finished communing with Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.
O regateio pelos justos
Abraão não pede clemência em abstracto, antes conta: cinquenta, quarenta e cinco, quarenta, até dez. O argumento é moral: o Juiz de toda a terra deve fazer justiça (v.25), enquanto se chama a si mesmo pó e cinza.
A descida pára em dez e o SENHOR retira-se, deixando por responder se haverá sequer dez, questão a que o capítulo 19 responde em Sodoma.
