Gênesis 28
Isaque envia Jacó a Padã-Arã para buscar esposa entre as filhas de Labão, transmitindo-lhe a bênção de Abraão. Esaú, ao ver que as mulheres cananeias desagradam aos pais, casa com uma filha de Ismael, numa última tentativa de agradar. Depois Jacó viaja sozinho rumo a Harã. A viragem chega ao anoitecer, quando se deita com uma pedra por almofada e sonha.

Isaque chamou Jacó, abençoou-o e lhe ordenou: “Você não tomará esposa dentre as filhas de Canaã.

Levante-se, vá a Padã-Arã, à casa de Betuel, pai de sua mãe. Tome de lá uma esposa dentre as filhas de Labão, irmão de sua mãe.
- 3
Que o Deus Todo-Poderoso o abençoe, o faça frutificar e o multiplique, para que você seja uma multidão de povos,
- 4
e lhe dê a bênção de Abraão, a você e à sua descendência com você, para que você herde a terra onde você peregrina, a qual Deus deu a Abraão.”

Isaque despediu Jacó. Ele foi a Padã-Arã, a Labão, filho de Betuel, o sírio, irmão de Rebeca, mãe de Jacó e de Esaú.

Ora, Esaú viu que Isaque havia abençoado Jacó e o enviado a Padã-Arã, para tomar de lá uma esposa, e que, ao abençoá-lo, deu-lhe uma ordem, dizendo: “Você não tomará esposa dentre as filhas de Canaã;”

e que Jacó obedeceu a seu pai e a sua mãe, e foi para Padã-Arã.

Esaú viu que as filhas de Canaã não agradavam a Isaque, seu pai.
- 9
Então Esaú foi a Ismael e tomou, além das esposas que já tinha, Maalate, filha de Ismael, filho de Abraão, irmã de Nebaiote, para ser sua esposa.

Jacó partiu de Berseba e foi em direção a Harã.

Ele chegou a um certo lugar e passou a noite ali, porque o sol já havia se posto. Ele pegou uma das pedras do lugar, colocou-a debaixo da cabeça e deitou-se naquele lugar para dormir.

Ele sonhou e viu uma escada apoiada na terra, e seu topo chegava ao céu. Eis que os anjos de Deus subiam e desciam por ela.

Eis que o SENHOR estava acima dela e disse: “Eu sou o SENHOR, o Deus de Abraão, seu pai, e o Deus de Isaque. Eu darei a terra em que você está deitado a você e à sua descendência.
- 14
Sua descendência será como o pó da terra, e você se espalhará para o oeste, para o leste, para o norte e para o sul. Em você e na sua descendência, todas as famílias da terra serão abençoadas.

Eis que eu estou com você e o guardarei por onde quer que você vá, e o trarei de volta a esta terra. Pois não o deixarei até que tenha feito aquilo de que lhe falei.”

Jacó despertou do seu sono e disse: “Certamente o SENHOR está neste lugar, e eu não sabia.”
- 17
Ele teve medo e disse: “Quão temível é este lugar! Esta não é outra senão a casa de Deus, e esta é a porta do céu.”
- 18
Jacó levantou-se de manhã cedo, pegou a pedra que havia colocado debaixo da cabeça, ergueu-a como uma coluna e derramou óleo sobre o seu topo.

Ele chamou o nome daquele lugar de Betel, mas o nome da cidade era Luz no princípio.
- 20
Jacó fez um voto, dizendo: “Se Deus estiver comigo e me guardar neste caminho em que ando, e me der pão para comer e roupas para vestir,
- 21
de modo que eu volte em paz à casa de meu pai, e o SENHOR for o meu Deus,
- 22
então esta pedra, que ergui como coluna, será a casa de Deus. De tudo o que me der, certamente lhe darei o dízimo.”

Isaac called Jacob, blessed him, and commanded him, “You shall not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan.
- 2
Arise, go to Paddan Aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother’s father. Take a wife from there from the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.

May God Almighty bless you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, that you may be a company of peoples,
- 4
and give you the blessing of Abraham, to you and to your offspring with you, that you may inherit the land where you travel, which God gave to Abraham.”

Isaac sent Jacob away. He went to Paddan Aram to Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s and Esau’s mother.

Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan Aram, to take him a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he gave him a command, saying, “You shall not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan;”

and that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Paddan Aram.

Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan didn’t please Isaac, his father.

So Esau went to Ishmael, and took, in addition to the wives that he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebaioth, to be his wife.

Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran.
- 11
He came to a certain place, and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. He took one of the stones of the place, and put it under his head, and lay down in that place to sleep.

He dreamed and saw a stairway set upon the earth, and its top reached to heaven. Behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
- 13
Behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, “I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac. I will give the land you lie on to you and to your offspring.
- 14
Your offspring will be as the dust of the earth, and you will spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south. In you and in your offspring, all the families of the earth will be blessed.
- 15
Behold, I am with you, and will keep you, wherever you go, and will bring you again into this land. For I will not leave you until I have done that which I have spoken of to you.”

Jacob awakened out of his sleep, and he said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I didn’t know it.”
- 17
He was afraid, and said, “How awesome this place is! This is none other than God’s house, and this is the gate of heaven.”
- 18
Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil on its top.
- 19
He called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at the first.
- 20
Jacob vowed a vow, saying, “If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and clothing to put on,
- 21
so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, and the LORD will be my God,
- 22
then this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, will be God’s house. Of all that you will give me I will surely give a tenth to you.”
A escada em Betel
Jacó vê uma escada da terra ao céu com anjos a subir e a descer, e o SENHOR no alto a renovar a promessa de terra e descendência, jurando guardá-lo onde quer que vá. Acorda cheio de temor, chama ao lugar a porta do céu, ergue a pedra como coluna, dá-lhe o nome de Betel e promete o dízimo a Deus se regressar em paz a casa.
