Ora, Pasur, filho do sacerdote Imer, que era o oficial chefe na casa do SENHOR, ouviu Jeremias profetizando estas coisas.

Então Pasur espancou o profeta Jeremias e o colocou no tronco que estava na porta superior de Benjamim, a qual ficava na casa do SENHOR.

No dia seguinte, Pasur soltou Jeremias do tronco. Então Jeremias lhe disse: “O SENHOR não chamou o seu nome de Pasur, mas de Magor-Missabibe.

Pois assim diz o SENHOR: ‘Eis que farei de você um terror para si mesmo e para todos os seus amigos. Eles cairão pela espada de seus inimigos, e os seus olhos verão isso. Entregarei todo o Judá nas mãos do rei da Babilônia, e ele os levará cativos para a Babilônia, e os matará à espada.

Além disso, entregarei todas as riquezas desta cidade, e todos os seus ganhos, e todas as suas coisas preciosas; sim, entregarei todos os tesouros dos reis de Judá nas mãos de seus inimigos. Eles os saquearão, os tomarão e os levarão para a Babilônia.

Você, Pasur, e todos os que habitam em sua casa irão para o cativeiro. Você irá para a Babilônia, e lá morrerá, e lá será sepultado, você e todos os seus amigos, aos quais você profetizou falsamente.’”

SENHOR, tu me persuadiste, e eu fui persuadido. Tu és mais forte do que eu, e prevaleceste. Tornei-me motivo de riso o dia todo. Todos zombam de mim.

Pois sempre que falo, eu clamo; eu grito: “Violência e destruição!” porque a palavra do SENHOR se tornou para mim uma afronta, e motivo de zombaria, o dia todo.

Se eu disser que não farei menção dele, nem falarei mais em seu nome, então há em meu coração como que um fogo ardente encerrado em meus ossos. Estou cansado de contê-lo. Eu não consigo.

Pois tenho ouvido a difamação de muitos: “Terror por todos os lados! Denunciem, e nós o denunciaremos!” dizem todos os meus amigos íntimos, aqueles que aguardam a minha queda. “Talvez ele seja persuadido, e nós prevaleceremos contra ele, e nos vingaremos dele.”

Mas o SENHOR está comigo como um guerreiro poderoso e temível. Portanto, meus perseguidores tropeçarão, e não prevalecerão. Eles ficarão totalmente frustrados porque não agiram com sabedoria, com uma desonra eterna que nunca será esquecida.

Mas, ó SENHOR dos Exércitos, que provas o justo, que vês o coração e a mente, permite-me ver a tua vingança sobre eles, pois a ti revelei a minha causa.

Cantem ao SENHOR! Louvem ao SENHOR, pois ele livrou a alma do necessitado das mãos dos malfeitores.
- 14
Maldito seja o dia em que nasci. Não seja abençoado o dia em que minha mãe me deu à luz.
- 15
Maldito seja o homem que trouxe a notícia a meu pai, dizendo: “Nasceu-lhe um menino”, deixando-o muito alegre.
- 16
Que esse homem seja como as cidades que o SENHOR destruiu, e não se arrependeu. Que ele ouça um clamor pela manhã, e gritos de alarme ao meio-dia,

porque ele não me matou desde o ventre. Assim minha mãe teria sido o meu túmulo, e o seu ventre estaria sempre grávido.

Por que saí do ventre para ver trabalho e tristeza, para que os meus dias sejam consumidos na vergonha?

Now Pashhur, the son of Immer the priest, who was chief officer in the LORD’s house, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things.

Then Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks that were in the upper gate of Benjamin, which was in the LORD’s house.

On the next day, Pashhur released Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then Jeremiah said to him, “The LORD has not called your name Pashhur, but Magormissabib.

For the LORD says, ‘Behold, I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends. They will fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes will see it. I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will carry them captive to Babylon, and will kill them with the sword.

Moreover I will give all the riches of this city, and all its gains, and all its precious things, yes, I will give all the treasures of the kings of Judah into the hand of their enemies. They will make them captives, take them, and carry them to Babylon.

You, Pashhur, and all who dwell in your house will go into captivity. You will come to Babylon, and there you will die, and there you will be buried, you, and all your friends, to whom you have prophesied falsely.’”

LORD, you have persuaded me, and I was persuaded. You are stronger than I, and have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all day. Everyone mocks me.

For as often as I speak, I cry out; I cry, “Violence and destruction!” because the LORD’s word has been made a reproach to me, and a derision, all day.
- 9
If I say that I will not make mention of him, or speak any more in his name, then there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones. I am weary with holding it in. I can’t.
- 10
For I have heard the defaming of many: “Terror on every side! Denounce, and we will denounce him!” say all my familiar friends, those who watch for my fall. “Perhaps he will be persuaded, and we will prevail against him, and we will take our revenge on him.”

But the LORD is with me as an awesome mighty one. Therefore my persecutors will stumble, and they won’t prevail. They will be utterly disappointed because they have not dealt wisely, even with an everlasting dishonor which will never be forgotten.

But the LORD of Armies, who tests the righteous, who sees the heart and the mind, let me see your vengeance on them, for I have revealed my cause to you.

Sing to the LORD! Praise the LORD, for he has delivered the soul of the needy from the hand of evildoers.
- 14
Cursed is the day in which I was born. Don’t let the day in which my mother bore me be blessed.
- 15
Cursed is the man who brought news to my father, saying, “A boy is born to you,” making him very glad.
- 16
Let that man be as the cities which the LORD overthrew, and didn’t repent. Let him hear a cry in the morning, and shouting at noontime,
- 17
because he didn’t kill me from the womb. So my mother would have been my grave, and her womb always great.
- 18
Why did I come out of the womb to see labor and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?
