Os filhos de Israel fizeram o que era mau aos olhos de Iavé, então Iavé os entregou na mão de Midian sete anos.
- 2
A mão de Midian prevaleceu contra Israel; e por causa de Midian os filhos de Israel fizeram para si os covis que estão nas montanhas, as cavernas e as fortalezas.
- 3
Assim foi, quando Israel semeou, que os midianitas, os amalequitas e as crianças do oriente se depararam com eles.
- 4
Eles acamparam contra eles, e destruíram o aumento da terra, até chegarem a Gaza. Eles não deixaram sustento em Israel, nem ovelhas, bois ou burros.
- 5
Pois eles surgiram com seu gado e suas tendas. Eles vieram como gafanhotos para a multidão. Tanto eles como seus camelos eram sem número; e entraram na terra para destruí-la.

Israel foi trazido muito baixo por causa do Midian; e os filhos de Israel gritaram a Javé.

Quando os filhos de Israel gritaram a Javé por causa de Midian,

Javé enviou um profeta aos filhos de Israel; e ele lhes disse: “Javé, o Deus de Israel, diz: 'Eu vos criei do Egito e vos tirei da casa da servidão.

Eu vos libertei da mão dos egípcios e da mão de todos os que vos oprimiram, e os expulsei de diante de vós, e vos dei sua terra”.
- 10
Eu vos disse: “Eu sou Yahweh, vosso Deus”. Não temereis os deuses dos amorreus, em cuja terra habitais”. Mas vós não ouvistes minha voz”.”

O anjo de Yahweh veio e sentou-se sob o carvalho que estava em Ophrah, que pertencia a Joash, o Abiezrita. Seu filho Gideon estava batendo o trigo no lagar, para escondê-lo dos midianitas.

O anjo de Yahweh apareceu-lhe, e disse-lhe: “Yahweh está contigo, homem poderoso e valoroso”!
- 13
Gideon disse-lhe: “Oh, meu senhor, se Yahweh está conosco, por que então tudo isso aconteceu conosco? Onde estão todas as suas obras maravilhosas de que nossos pais nos falaram, dizendo: “Javé não nos trouxe do Egito? Mas agora Javé nos expulsou e nos entregou nas mãos de Midian”.

Yahweh olhou para ele, e disse: “Vá nesta força, e salve Israel da mão de Midian. Eu não o enviei?”
- 15
Ele lhe disse: “Ó Senhor, como salvar Israel? Eis que minha família é a mais pobre de Manasseh, e eu sou o menor na casa de meu pai”.
- 16
Yahweh disse-lhe: “Certamente eu estarei com você, e você golpeará os midianitas como um só homem”.
- 17
Ele lhe disse: “Se agora encontrei um favor em sua visão, então me mostre um sinal de que é você quem fala comigo”.
- 18
Por favor, não vá embora até que eu venha até você, traga meu presente e o coloque diante de você”. Ele disse: “Vou esperar até você voltar”.
- 19
Gideon entrou e preparou um cabrito jovem e bolos ázimos de uma efa de refeição. Ele colocou a carne em uma cesta e colocou o caldo em uma panela, levou-o para fora debaixo do carvalho e o apresentou.

O anjo de Deus lhe disse: “Pegue a carne e os bolos ázimos, ponha-os sobre esta pedra e derrame o caldo”. Ele o fez.

Então o anjo de Yahweh estendeu a ponta do bastão que estava em sua mão e tocou a carne e os bolos ázimos; e o fogo saiu da rocha e consumiu a carne e os bolos ázimos. Então o anjo de Yahweh saiu de sua vista.

Gideon viu que ele era o anjo de Yahweh; e Gideon disse: “Ai de mim, Senhor Yahweh! Porque eu vi o anjo de Javé cara a cara”!

Yahweh disse a ele: “Que a paz esteja com você! Não tenha medo. Não morrereis”.
- 24
Então Gideon construiu ali um altar para Yahweh, e o chamou de “Yahweh é Paz”. Até hoje ainda se encontra em Ophrah dos Abiezrites.

Naquela mesma noite, Yahweh disse-lhe: “Pegue o touro de seu pai, mesmo o segundo touro de sete anos, e jogue o altar de Baal que seu pai tem, e corte o Asherah que está por ele”.
- 26
Então construa um altar a Javé seu Deus no topo deste reduto, de maneira ordeira, e tome o segundo touro, e ofereça um holocausto com a madeira do Asherah que você cortará”.

Então Gideon pegou dez homens de seus criados e fez como Yahweh havia falado com ele. Como ele temia a casa de seu pai e os homens da cidade, ele não podia fazê-lo de dia, mas o fazia de noite.

Quando os homens da cidade se levantaram cedo pela manhã, eis que o altar de Baal foi derrubado, e o Asherah foi cortado por ele, e o segundo touro foi oferecido sobre o altar que foi construído.

Disseram um ao outro: “Quem fez esta coisa?”. Quando perguntaram e perguntaram, disseram: “Gideon, o filho de Joás, fez esta coisa”.
- 30
Então os homens da cidade disseram a Joás: “Traga seu filho para fora, para que ele possa morrer, porque ele quebrou o altar de Baal, e porque ele cortou o Asherah que estava por ele”.

Joás disse a todos os que estavam contra ele: “Você vai lutar por Baal? Ou você vai salvá-lo? Aquele que lutará por ele, que seja morto pela manhã! Se ele é um deus, que lute por ele mesmo, porque alguém derrubou seu altar”!

Portanto, naquele dia ele o nomeou Jerub-Baal, dizendo: “Que Baal lute contra ele, porque ele quebrou seu altar”.

Então todos os midianitas e os amalequitas e as crianças do leste se reuniram; e passaram, e acamparam no vale de Jezreel.
- 34
Mas o Espírito de Yahweh veio sobre Gideon, e ele soou uma trombeta; e Abiezer foi reunido para segui-lo.
- 35
Ele enviou mensageiros por toda Manasseh, e eles também se reuniram para segui-lo. Ele enviou mensageiros para Asher, para Zebulun, e para Naftali; e eles vieram ao seu encontro.

Gideon disse a Deus: “Se você salvar Israel pela minha mão, como você falou,
- 37
eis que colocarei um velo de lã na eira. Se houver orvalho somente no velo, e ele estiver seco em todo o chão, então saberei que você salvará Israel pela minha mão, como você falou”.

Foi assim; pois ele se levantou cedo no dia seguinte, pressionou o velo e espremeu o orvalho do velo, uma bacia cheia de água.

Gideon disse a Deus: “Não deixe que sua raiva se acenda contra mim, e eu falarei apenas desta vez”. Por favor, deixe-me fazer um julgamento só desta vez com o velo”. Que agora esteja seco somente no velo, e em todo o chão que haja orvalho”.

Deus o fez naquela noite; pois estava seco apenas no velo, e havia orvalho em todo o chão.

The children of Israel did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight, so the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.
- 2
The hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made themselves the dens which are in the mountains, the caves, and the strongholds.
- 3
So it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites, the Amalekites, and the children of the east came up against them.
- 4
They encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, until you come to Gaza. They left no sustenance in Israel, and no sheep, ox, or donkey.

For they came up with their livestock and their tents. They came in as locusts for multitude. Both they and their camels were without number; and they came into the land to destroy it.
- 6
Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried to the LORD.

When the children of Israel cried to the LORD because of Midian,
- 8
The LORD sent a prophet to the children of Israel; and he said to them, “The LORD, the God of Israel, says, ‘I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you out of the house of bondage.
- 9
I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land.
- 10
I said to you, “I am the LORD your God. You shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.” But you have not listened to my voice.’”
- 11
The LORD’s angel came and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite. His son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press, to hide it from the Midianites.
- 12
The LORD’s angel appeared to him, and said to him, “The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor!”
- 13
Gideon said to him, “Oh, my lord, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this happened to us? Where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, ‘Didn’t the LORD bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the LORD has cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.”

The LORD looked at him, and said, “Go in this your might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian. Haven’t I sent you?”
- 15
He said to him, “O Lord, how shall I save Israel? Behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.”
- 16
The LORD said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.”
- 17
He said to him, “If now I have found favor in your sight, then show me a sign that it is you who talk with me.
- 18
Please don’t go away until I come to you, and bring out my present, and lay it before you.” He said, “I will wait until you come back.”
- 19
Gideon went in and prepared a young goat and unleavened cakes of an ephah of meal. He put the meat in a basket and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out to him under the oak, and presented it.
- 20
The angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth.” He did so.
- 21
Then the LORD’s angel stretched out the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes; and fire went up out of the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes. Then the LORD’s angel departed out of his sight.

Gideon saw that he was the LORD’s angel; and Gideon said, “Alas, Lord GOD! Because I have seen the LORD’s angel face to face!”
- 23
The LORD said to him, “Peace be to you! Don’t be afraid. You shall not die.”
- 24
Then Gideon built an altar there to the LORD, and called it “The LORD is Peace.” To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

That same night, the LORD said to him, “Take your father’s bull, even the second bull seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is by it.
- 26
Then build an altar to the LORD your God on the top of this stronghold, in an orderly way, and take the second bull, and offer a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah which you shall cut down.”

Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had spoken to him. Because he feared his father’s household and the men of the city, he could not do it by day, but he did it by night.

When the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bull was offered on the altar that was built.
- 29
They said to one another, “Who has done this thing?” When they inquired and asked, they said, “Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing.”
- 30
Then the men of the city said to Joash, “Bring out your son, that he may die, because he has broken down the altar of Baal, and because he has cut down the Asherah that was by it.”
- 31
Joash said to all who stood against him, “Will you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? He who will contend for him, let him be put to death by morning! If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because someone has broken down his altar!”
- 32
Therefore on that day he named him Jerub-Baal, saying, “Let Baal contend against him, because he has broken down his altar.”
- 33
Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east assembled themselves together; and they passed over, and encamped in the valley of Jezreel.
- 34
But the LORD’s Spirit came on Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered together to follow him.
- 35
He sent messengers throughout all Manasseh, and they also were gathered together to follow him. He sent messengers to Asher, to Zebulun, and to Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.
- 36
Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken,
- 37
behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then I’ll know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken.”
- 38
It was so; for he rose up early on the next day, and pressed the fleece together, and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.
- 39
Gideon said to God, “Don’t let your anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once. Please let me make a trial just this once with the fleece. Let it now be dry only on the fleece, and on all the ground let there be dew.”
- 40
God did so that night; for it was dry on the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
