Mateus 1
Mateus não começa por um nascimento, mas por uma lista: quarenta e dois pais desde Abraão até José, agrupados de propósito em três séries de catorze (v. 17). Quatro mulheres interrompem a cadeia masculina — Tamar, Raabe, Rute e a que fora mulher de Urias. Convém reparar como o versículo 16 quebra o padrão: a linha deixa de dizer que José gerou e detém-se em José, marido de Maria, da qual nasceu Jesus. A genealogia arma o enigma que a segunda metade há de resolver.

José, seu marido, sendo um homem justo e não querendo expô-la à desonra pública, pretendia deixá-la secretamente.

Mas, enquanto ele pensava nestas coisas, eis que um anjo do Senhor apareceu a ele em sonho, dizendo: “José, filho de Davi, não tenha medo de receber Maria como sua esposa, pois o que nela foi gerado é do Espírito Santo.

Ela dará à luz um filho. Você lhe dará o nome de Jesus, pois é ele quem salvará o seu povo dos pecados deles.”

Ora, tudo isso aconteceu para que se cumprisse o que foi dito pelo Senhor por meio do profeta, dizendo:

“Eis que a virgem ficará grávida, e dará à luz um filho. Eles o chamarão pelo nome de Emanuel,” que, traduzido, é: “Deus conosco”.

José despertou do sono e fez como o anjo do Senhor lhe havia ordenado, e recebeu sua esposa;

e não teve relações com ela até que ela desse à luz seu filho primogênito. E ele lhe deu o nome de Jesus.

Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.

After the exile to Babylon, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel. Shealtiel became the father of Zerubbabel.

Zerubbabel became the father of Abiud. Abiud became the father of Eliakim. Eliakim became the father of Azor.

Jacob became the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, from whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the exile to Babylon fourteen generations; and from the carrying away to Babylon to the Christ, fourteen generations.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was like this: After his mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph, before they came together, she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit.

Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, intended to put her away secretly.

But when he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take to yourself Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

She shall give birth to a son. You shall name him Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins.”

Now all this has happened that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,

“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall give birth to a son. They shall call his name Immanuel,” which is, being interpreted, “God with us.”

Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took his wife to himself;

and didn’t know her sexually until she had given birth to her firstborn son. He named him Jesus.
Porque é que José permanece na narrativa
Se Jesus não é filho biológico de José, porquê enumerar a ascendência dele? A resposta está no modo como o anjo o trata por filho de David (v. 20): ao dar o nome ao menino, José adopta-o legalmente na linhagem davídica. O versículo 21 explica o nome pela missão de salvar o povo dos seus pecados, e o 23 prende-o à profecia de Emanuel, "Deus connosco".
