O SENHOR falou a Moisés, dizendo:

“Envie homens para que espiem a terra de Canaã, que eu dou aos filhos de Israel. De cada tribo de seus pais, você enviará um homem, sendo cada um deles um príncipe entre eles.”

Moisés os enviou do deserto de Parã, segundo a ordem do SENHOR. Todos eles eram homens que eram chefes dos filhos de Israel.

Estes eram os seus nomes: Da tribo de Rúben, Samua, filho de Zacur.

Da tribo de Simeão, Safate, filho de Hori.
- 6
Da tribo de Judá, Calebe, filho de Jefoné.
- 7
Da tribo de Issacar, Igal, filho de José.
- 8
Da tribo de Efraim, Oseias, filho de Num.
- 9
Da tribo de Benjamim, Palti, filho de Rafu.
- 10
Da tribo de Zebulom, Gadiel, filho de Sodi.
- 11
Da tribo de José, da tribo de Manassés, Gadi, filho de Susi.
- 12
Da tribo de Dã, Amiel, filho de Gemali.
- 13
Da tribo de Aser, Setur, filho de Micael.
- 14
Da tribo de Naftali, Nabi, filho de Vofsi.
- 15
Da tribo de Gade, Geuel, filho de Maqui.

Estes são os nomes dos homens que Moisés enviou para espiar a terra. Moisés chamou a Oseias, filho de Num, de Josué.

Moisés os enviou para espiar a terra de Canaã e lhes disse: “Subam por este caminho, pelo Sul, e subam à região montanhosa.

Vejam como é a terra; e o povo que nela habita, se são fortes ou fracos, se são poucos ou muitos;
- 19
e como é a terra em que habitam, se é boa ou ruim; e como são as cidades em que habitam, se em acampamentos ou em fortalezas;
- 20
e como é a terra, se é fértil ou pobre, se nela há árvores ou não. Sejam corajosos e tragam alguns dos frutos da terra.” Ora, a época era a época das primeiras uvas maduras.

Então eles subiram e espiaram a terra desde o deserto de Zim até Reobe, à entrada de Hamate.

Eles subiram pelo Sul e chegaram a Hebrom; e Aimã, Sesai e Talmai, os filhos de Anaque, estavam lá. (Ora, Hebrom foi edificada sete anos antes de Zoã, no Egito.)

Eles chegaram ao vale de Escol e cortaram dali um ramo com um único cacho de uvas, e o carregaram em uma vara entre dois homens. Eles também trouxeram algumas romãs e figos.

Aquele lugar foi chamado de vale de Escol, por causa do cacho que os filhos de Israel cortaram dali.

Eles retornaram de espiar a terra ao fim de quarenta dias.

Eles foram e chegaram a Moisés, a Arão e a toda a congregação dos filhos de Israel, no deserto de Parã, em Cades; e trouxeram notícias a eles e a toda a congregação. Eles lhes mostraram o fruto da terra.

Eles lhe relataram, e disseram: “Fomos à terra para onde você nos enviou. Certamente ela mana leite e mel, e este é o seu fruto.
- 28
Contudo, o povo que habita na terra é forte, e as cidades são fortificadas e muito grandes. Além disso, vimos os filhos de Anaque lá.
- 29
Amaleque habita na terra do Sul. O heteu, o jebuseu e o amorreu habitam na região montanhosa. O cananeu habita junto ao mar e ao longo da margem do Jordão.”

Calebe acalmou o povo perante Moisés, e disse: “Subamos imediatamente e tomemos posse dela; pois somos perfeitamente capazes de vencê-la!”

Mas os homens que subiram com ele disseram: “Não somos capazes de subir contra o povo; pois eles são mais fortes do que nós.”

Eles trouxeram aos filhos de Israel um mau relatório da terra que haviam espiado, dizendo: “A terra, pela qual passamos para espiá-la, é uma terra que devora os seus habitantes; e todo o povo que vimos nela são homens de grande estatura.

Lá vimos os nefilins, os filhos de Anaque, que descendem dos nefilins. The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

“Send men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel. Of every tribe of their fathers, you shall send a man, every one a prince among them.”

Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran according to the commandment of the LORD. All of them were men who were heads of the children of Israel.

These were their names: Of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.

Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.

Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.

Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.

These are the names of the men who Moses sent to spy out the land. Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.

Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, “Go up this way by the South, and go up into the hill country.
- 18
See the land, what it is; and the people who dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many;
- 19
and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds;
- 20
and what the land is, whether it is fertile or poor, whether there is wood therein, or not. Be courageous, and bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes.

So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, to the entrance of Hamath.

They went up by the South, and came to Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

They came to the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it on a staff between two. They also brought some of the pomegranates and figs.

That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from there.

They returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days.
- 26
They went and came to Moses, to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word to them and to all the congregation. They showed them the fruit of the land.

They told him, and said, “We came to the land where you sent us. Surely it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.
- 28
However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. Moreover, we saw the children of Anak there.
- 29
Amalek dwells in the land of the South. The Hittite, the Jebusite, and the Amorite dwell in the hill country. The Canaanite dwells by the sea, and along the side of the Jordan.”

Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, “Let’s go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it!”

But the men who went up with him said, “We aren’t able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.”

They brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out to the children of Israel, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eats up its inhabitants; and all the people who we saw in it are men of great stature.
- 33
There we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim. We were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.”
