Toda a congregação levantou a sua voz e gritou; e o povo chorou naquela noite.
- 2
Todos os filhos de Israel murmuraram contra Moisés e contra Arão. Toda a congregação lhes disse: “Quem dera tivéssemos morrido na terra do Egito, ou que tivéssemos morrido neste deserto!
- 3
Por que o SENHOR nos traz a esta terra, para cairmos à espada? Nossas esposas e nossas crianças serão capturadas ou mortas! Não seria melhor para nós voltarmos para o Egito?”

Eles disseram uns aos outros: “Vamos escolher um líder e voltar para o Egito.”
- 5
Então Moisés e Arão caíram com o rosto em terra diante de toda a assembleia da congregação dos filhos de Israel.
- 6
Josué, filho de Num, e Calebe, filho de Jefoné, que eram dos que espiaram a terra, rasgaram as suas roupas.
- 7
Eles falaram a toda a congregação dos filhos de Israel, dizendo: “A terra pela qual passamos para espiar é uma terra muitíssimo boa.
- 8
Se o SENHOR se agradar de nós, então ele nos fará entrar nesta terra e a dará a nós: uma terra que mana leite e mel.
- 9
Tão somente não se rebelem contra o SENHOR, nem tenham medo do povo da terra; pois eles são como pão para nós. A proteção deles foi removida, e o SENHOR está conosco. Não tenham medo deles.”

Mas toda a congregação ameaçou apedrejá-los. A glória do SENHOR apareceu na Tenda do Encontro a todos os filhos de Israel.

O SENHOR disse a Moisés: “Até quando este povo me desprezará? Até quando não crerão em mim, apesar de todos os sinais que realizei no meio deles?
- 12
Eu os ferirei com pestilência e os deserdarei, e farei de você uma nação maior e mais poderosa do que eles.”
- 13
Moisés disse ao SENHOR: “Então os egípcios ouvirão isso; pois tu fizeste subir este povo do meio deles com o teu poder.
- 14
Eles contarão isso aos habitantes desta terra. Eles ouviram que tu, SENHOR, estás no meio deste povo; pois tu, SENHOR, és visto face a face, e a tua nuvem paira sobre eles, e tu vais adiante deles, numa coluna de nuvem de dia, e numa coluna de fogo de noite.

Agora, se matares este povo como se fosse um só homem, então as nações que ouviram a tua fama falarão, dizendo:
- 16
'Porque o SENHOR não foi capaz de introduzir este povo na terra que lhes jurou, por isso ele os matou no deserto.'
- 17
Agora, por favor, que o poder do Senhor seja grande, conforme falaste, dizendo:
- 18
'O SENHOR é lento para se irar e abundante em misericórdia, perdoando a iniquidade e a desobediência; e de forma alguma terá por inocente o culpado, visitando a iniquidade dos pais nos filhos, na terceira e na quarta geração.'
- 19
Por favor, perdoa a iniquidade deste povo segundo a grandeza da tua misericórdia, e assim como tens perdoado a este povo, desde o Egito até agora.”
- 20
O SENHOR disse: “Eu os perdoei, conforme a sua palavra;
- 21
mas, na verdade — tão certo como eu vivo, e como toda a terra se encherá da glória do SENHOR —
- 22
porque todos aqueles homens que viram a minha glória e os meus sinais, que realizei no Egito e no deserto, e ainda assim me tentaram estas dez vezes, e não deram ouvidos à minha voz;
- 23
certamente não verão a terra que jurei aos seus pais, e nenhum daqueles que me desprezaram a verá.
- 24
Mas o meu servo Calebe, porque teve outro espírito nele, e me seguiu totalmente, eu o introduzirei na terra em que ele entrou. A sua descendência a possuirá.
- 25
Visto que os amalequitas e os cananeus habitam no vale, amanhã deem meia-volta e partam para o deserto pelo caminho do Mar Vermelho.”

O SENHOR falou a Moisés e a Arão, dizendo:
- 27
“Até quando suportarei esta má congregação que murmura contra mim? Tenho ouvido as murmurações dos filhos de Israel, que eles proferem contra mim.
- 28
Diga-lhes: 'Tão certo como eu vivo, diz o SENHOR, certamente farei a vocês assim como falaram aos meus ouvidos.
- 29
Os seus cadáveres cairão neste deserto; e todos os que foram contados de vocês, segundo todo o seu número, de vinte anos para cima, que murmuraram contra mim,
- 30
certamente vocês não entrarão na terra a respeito da qual jurei que os faria habitar nela, exceto Calebe, filho de Jefoné, e Josué, filho de Num.
- 31
Mas eu introduzirei as suas crianças, que vocês disseram que seriam capturadas ou mortas, e elas conhecerão a terra que vocês rejeitaram.
- 32
Mas, quanto a vocês, os seus cadáveres cairão neste deserto.
- 33
Os seus filhos serão peregrinos no deserto por quarenta anos, e levarão sobre si a prostituição de vocês, até que os seus cadáveres sejam consumidos no deserto.
- 34
Segundo o número dos dias em que espiaram a terra, ou seja, quarenta dias, para cada dia um ano, vocês levarão sobre si as suas iniquidades, por quarenta anos, e conhecerão a minha oposição.'
- 35
Eu, o SENHOR, falei. Certamente farei isso a toda esta má congregação que se reuniu contra mim. Neste deserto eles serão consumidos, e aqui morrerão.”
- 36
Os homens que Moisés enviou para espiar a terra, que voltaram e fizeram toda a congregação murmurar contra ele, trazendo um mau relatório sobre a terra,
- 37
esses mesmos homens que trouxeram um mau relatório da terra morreram de praga perante o SENHOR.
- 38
Mas Josué, filho de Num, e Calebe, filho de Jefoné, permaneceram vivos dentre aqueles homens que foram espiar a terra.
- 39
Moisés falou estas palavras a todos os filhos de Israel, e o povo lamentou profundamente.
- 40
Eles se levantaram de madrugada e subiram ao topo do monte, dizendo: “Eis-nos aqui, e subiremos ao lugar que o SENHOR prometeu; pois nós pecamos.”
- 41
Moisés disse: “Por que agora vocês desobedecem ao mandamento do SENHOR, visto que isso não prosperará?
- 42
Não subam, pois o SENHOR não está no meio de vocês; para que não sejam derrotados diante dos seus inimigos.
- 43
Pois ali os amalequitas e os cananeus estão diante de vocês, e vocês cairão à espada porque deixaram de seguir o SENHOR; portanto, o SENHOR não estará com vocês.”
- 44
Mas eles se atreveram a subir ao topo do monte. No entanto, a arca da aliança do SENHOR e Moisés não se afastaram do acampamento.

Então os amalequitas e os cananeus que habitavam naquele monte desceram, e os atacaram, e os derrotaram até Horma.

All the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.
- 2
All the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “We wish that we had died in the land of Egypt, or that we had died in this wilderness!
- 3
Why does the LORD bring us to this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be captured or killed! Wouldn’t it be better for us to return into Egypt?”
- 4
They said to one another, “Let’s choose a leader, and let’s return into Egypt.”
- 5
Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
- 6
Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of those who spied out the land, tore their clothes.
- 7
They spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land.
- 8
If the LORD delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us: a land which flows with milk and honey.
- 9
Only don’t rebel against the LORD, neither fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us. Their defense is removed from over them, and the LORD is with us. Don’t fear them.”
- 10
But all the congregation threatened to stone them with stones. The LORD’s glory appeared in the Tent of Meeting to all the children of Israel.
- 11
The LORD said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? How long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them?
- 12
I will strike them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”
- 13
Moses said to the LORD, “Then the Egyptians will hear it; for you brought up this people in your might from among them.
- 14
They will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you LORD are among this people; for you LORD are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them, and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.
- 15
Now if you killed this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying,
- 16
‘Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.’
- 17
Now please let the power of the Lord be great, according as you have spoken, saying,
- 18
‘The LORD is slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and disobedience; and he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation.’
- 19
Please pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your loving kindness, and just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”
- 20
The LORD said, “I have pardoned according to your word;
- 21
but in very deed—as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the LORD’s glory—
- 22
because all those men who have seen my glory and my signs, which I worked in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tempted me these ten times, and have not listened to my voice;
- 23
surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who despised me see it.
- 24
But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him I will bring into the land into which he went. His offspring shall possess it.
- 25
Since the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the valley, tomorrow turn and go into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”
- 26
The LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,
- 27
“How long shall I bear with this evil congregation that complain against me? I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel, which they complain against me.
- 28
Tell them, ‘As I live, says the LORD, surely as you have spoken in my ears, so I will do to you.
- 29
Your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and all who were counted of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have complained against me,
- 30
surely you shall not come into the land concerning which I swore that I would make you dwell therein, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
- 31
But I will bring in your little ones that you said should be captured or killed, and they shall know the land which you have rejected.
- 32
But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.
- 33
Your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your prostitution, until your dead bodies are consumed in the wilderness.
- 34
After the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, you will bear your iniquities, even forty years, and you will know my alienation.’
- 35
I, the LORD, have spoken. I will surely do this to all this evil congregation who are gathered together against me. In this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.”
- 36
The men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation to murmur against him by bringing up an evil report against the land,
- 37
even those men who brought up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before the LORD.
- 38
But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive of those men who went to spy out the land.
- 39
Moses told these words to all the children of Israel, and the people mourned greatly.
- 40
They rose up early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, “Behold, we are here, and will go up to the place which the LORD has promised; for we have sinned.”
- 41
Moses said, “Why now do you disobey the commandment of the LORD, since it shall not prosper?
- 42
Don’t go up, for the LORD isn’t among you; that way you won’t be struck down before your enemies.
- 43
For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and you will fall by the sword because you turned back from following the LORD; therefore the LORD will not be with you.”
- 44
But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain. Nevertheless, the ark of the LORD’s covenant and Moses didn’t depart out of the camp.
- 45
Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites who lived in that mountain, and struck them and beat them down even to Hormah.
