Salmos 78
Asafe ensina a história como advertência. Em 72 versículos reconta o percurso do Egito até Davi — o mar dividido, o maná e as codornizes, as pragas em Zoã — mas enquanto cadeia de esquecimento: cada geração prova o resgate e volta a rebelar-se. Repare-se em como a misericórdia interrompe o padrão. Deus ira-se, mas perdoa a iniquidade e não os destrói (v.38). O poema avança para uma viragem: Siló abandonada, Efraim rejeitado, Judá e Davi escolhidos.

Ouçam o meu ensino, meu povo. Inclinem os seus ouvidos às palavras da minha boca.

Abrirei a minha boca em uma parábola. Proferirei enigmas do passado,
- 3
que ouvimos e conhecemos, e que nossos pais nos contaram.

Não os esconderemos dos seus filhos, contando à geração futura os louvores do SENHOR, a sua força e as maravilhas que ele fez.

Pois ele estabeleceu uma aliança em Jacó, e instituiu um ensino em Israel, o qual ordenou aos nossos pais, que o fizessem conhecido aos seus filhos;
- 6
para que a geração futura o soubesse, até mesmo os filhos que ainda nasceriam; os quais se levantariam e o contariam aos seus filhos,
- 7
para que pusessem a sua esperança em Deus, e não se esquecessem das obras de Deus, mas guardassem os seus mandamentos,
- 8
e não fossem como seus pais— uma geração teimosa e rebelde, uma geração que não manteve o seu coração leal, cujo espírito não foi fiel a Deus.

Os filhos de Efraim, armados e carregando arcos, recuaram no dia da batalha.
- 10
Eles não guardaram a aliança de Deus, e se recusaram a andar na sua lei.
- 11
Eles se esqueceram dos seus feitos, das suas maravilhas que ele lhes havia mostrado.
- 12
Ele fez coisas maravilhosas à vista de seus pais, na terra do Egito, no campo de Zoã.
- 13
Ele dividiu o mar, e os fez passar por ele. Ele fez as águas se erguerem como um monte.
- 14
De dia ele também os guiou com uma nuvem, e a noite toda com uma luz de fogo.
- 15
Ele fendeu rochas no deserto, e lhes deu de beber abundantemente, como das profundezas.
- 16
Ele também tirou correntes da rocha, e fez as águas descerem como rios.
- 17
Contudo, eles continuaram a pecar contra ele, a se rebelar contra o Altíssimo no deserto.

Eles tentaram a Deus em seu coração, pedindo comida de acordo com o seu desejo.
- 19
Sim, eles falaram contra Deus. Eles disseram: “Pode Deus preparar uma mesa no deserto?

Eis que ele feriu a rocha, de modo que as águas jorraram, e as correntes transbordaram. Pode ele também dar pão? Fornecerá ele carne para o seu povo?”

Portanto, o SENHOR ouviu, e ficou irado. Um fogo se acendeu contra Jacó, e a ira também subiu contra Israel,

porque eles não creram em Deus, e não confiaram na sua salvação.

Ainda assim, ele deu ordens aos céus acima, e abriu as portas do céu.
- 24
Ele fez chover maná sobre eles para comerem, e lhes deu o alimento do céu.
- 25
O homem comeu o pão dos anjos. Ele lhes enviou comida até se fartarem.
- 26
Ele fez o vento leste soprar no céu. Pelo seu poder, ele guiou o vento sul.
- 27
Ele também fez chover carne sobre eles como o pó, aves aladas como a areia dos mares.
- 28
Ele as deixou cair no meio do seu acampamento, ao redor de suas habitações.
- 29
Então eles comeram e se fartaram bem. Ele lhes deu o que eles mesmos desejavam.

Eles não se afastaram dos seus desejos. A comida ainda estava em suas bocas,
- 31
quando a ira de Deus subiu contra eles, matou alguns dos seus mais fortes, e derrubou os jovens de Israel.

Apesar de tudo isso, eles ainda pecaram, e não creram nas suas obras maravilhosas.

Portanto, ele consumiu os seus dias em vaidade, e os seus anos em terror.

Quando ele os matava, então eles o buscavam. Eles voltavam e buscavam a Deus com fervor.

Eles se lembravam de que Deus era a sua rocha, o Deus Altíssimo, o seu redentor.
- 36
Mas eles o lisonjeavam com a sua boca, e mentiam para ele com a sua língua.

Pois o coração deles não era reto para com ele, nem foram fiéis na sua aliança.
- 38
Mas ele, sendo misericordioso, perdoou a iniquidade, e não os destruiu. Sim, muitas vezes ele desviou a sua ira, e não despertou todo o seu furor.

Ele se lembrou de que eles eram apenas carne, um vento que passa e não volta mais.
- 40
Quantas vezes eles se rebelaram contra ele no deserto, e o entristeceram no ermo!

Eles voltaram a tentar a Deus, e provocaram o Santo de Israel.
- 42
Eles não se lembraram da sua mão, nem do dia em que ele os redimiu do adversário;
- 43
de como ele estabeleceu os seus sinais no Egito, as suas maravilhas no campo de Zoã,
- 44
ele transformou os seus rios em sangue, e as suas correntes, para que não pudessem beber.

Ele enviou entre eles enxames de moscas, que os devoraram; e rãs, que os destruíram.
- 46
Ele também entregou as suas colheitas à lagarta, e o seu trabalho ao gafanhoto.

Ele destruiu as suas videiras com granizo, as suas figueiras bravas com geada.
- 48
Ele também entregou o seu gado ao granizo, e os seus rebanhos aos raios ardentes.
- 49
Ele lançou sobre eles o furor da sua ira, fúria, indignação e angústia, e um bando de anjos do mal.
- 50
Ele abriu um caminho para a sua ira. Ele não poupou a alma deles da morte, mas entregou a vida deles à pestilência,

e feriu todos os primogênitos no Egito, as primícias da sua força nas tendas de Cam.

Mas ele conduziu o seu próprio povo como ovelhas, e os guiou no deserto como um rebanho.
- 53
Ele os guiou em segurança, de modo que não tiveram medo, mas o mar encobriu os seus inimigos.
- 54
Ele os trouxe até a fronteira do seu santuário, a este monte, que a sua mão direita havia conquistado.
- 55
Ele também expulsou as nações de diante deles, distribuiu-lhes uma herança por medida, e fez as tribos de Israel habitarem em suas tendas.

Contudo, eles tentaram e se rebelaram contra o Deus Altíssimo, e não guardaram os seus testemunhos,
- 57
mas voltaram atrás, e agiram traiçoeiramente como os seus pais. Eles se desviaram como um arco enganoso.

Pois eles o provocaram à ira com os seus altos, e o moveram a ciúmes com as suas imagens esculpidas.
- 59
Quando Deus ouviu isso, ele ficou irado, e abominou grandemente a Israel,
- 60
de modo que ele abandonou a tenda de Siló, a tenda que ele armou entre os homens,
- 61
e entregou a sua força ao cativeiro, a sua glória nas mãos do adversário.
- 62
Ele também entregou o seu povo à espada, e ficou irado com a sua herança.
- 63
O fogo devorou os seus jovens. As suas virgens não tiveram canção de casamento.
- 64
Os seus sacerdotes caíram à espada, e as suas viúvas não puderam chorar.
- 65
Então o Senhor despertou como quem sai do sono, como um valente que grita por causa do vinho.
- 66
Ele feriu os seus adversários, fazendo-os recuar. Ele os submeteu a uma vergonha perpétua.
- 67
Além disso, ele rejeitou a tenda de José, e não escolheu a tribo de Efraim,
- 68
Mas escolheu a tribo de Judá, o monte Sião, o qual ele amava.

Ele construiu o seu santuário como as alturas, como a terra que ele estabeleceu para sempre.
- 70
Ele também escolheu Davi, seu servo, e o tirou dos apriscos das ovelhas;
- 71
de seguir as ovelhas que amamentam as suas crias, ele o trouxe para ser o pastor de Jacó, seu povo, e de Israel, sua herança.

Assim, ele foi o pastor deles segundo a integridade do seu coração, e os guiou com a habilidade das suas mãos.

Hear my teaching, my people. Turn your ears to the words of my mouth.

I will open my mouth in a parable. I will utter dark sayings of old,
- 3
which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
- 4
We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, his strength, and his wondrous deeds that he has done.

For he established a covenant in Jacob, and appointed a teaching in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children;
- 6
that the generation to come might know, even the children who should be born; who should arise and tell their children,
- 7
that they might set their hope in God, and not forget God’s deeds, but keep his commandments,
- 8
and might not be as their fathers— a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that didn’t make their hearts loyal, whose spirit was not steadfast with God.

The children of Ephraim, being armed and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.
- 10
They didn’t keep God’s covenant, and refused to walk in his law.
- 11
They forgot his doings, his wondrous deeds that he had shown them.
- 12
He did marvelous things in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.
- 13
He split the sea, and caused them to pass through. He made the waters stand as a heap.
- 14
In the daytime he also led them with a cloud, and all night with a light of fire.
- 15
He split rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink abundantly as out of the depths.
- 16
He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.
- 17
Yet they still went on to sin against him, to rebel against the Most High in the desert.
- 18
They tempted God in their heart by asking food according to their desire.
- 19
Yes, they spoke against God. They said, “Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?
- 20
Behold, he struck the rock, so that waters gushed out, and streams overflowed. Can he give bread also? Will he provide meat for his people?”
- 21
Therefore the LORD heard, and was angry. A fire was kindled against Jacob, anger also went up against Israel,
- 22
because they didn’t believe in God, and didn’t trust in his salvation.
- 23
Yet he commanded the skies above, and opened the doors of heaven.
- 24
He rained down manna on them to eat, and gave them food from the sky.
- 25
Man ate the bread of angels. He sent them food to the full.
- 26
He caused the east wind to blow in the sky. By his power he guided the south wind.
- 27
He also rained meat on them as the dust, winged birds as the sand of the seas.
- 28
He let them fall in the middle of their camp, around their habitations.
- 29
So they ate, and were well filled. He gave them their own desire.
- 30
They didn’t turn from their cravings. Their food was yet in their mouths,
- 31
when the anger of God went up against them, killed some of their strongest, and struck down the young men of Israel.
- 32
For all this they still sinned, and didn’t believe in his wondrous works.
- 33
Therefore he consumed their days in vanity, and their years in terror.
- 34
When he killed them, then they inquired after him. They returned and sought God earnestly.
- 35
They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God, their redeemer.
- 36
But they flattered him with their mouth, and lied to him with their tongue.
- 37
For their heart was not right with him, neither were they faithful in his covenant.
- 38
But he, being merciful, forgave iniquity, and didn’t destroy them. Yes, many times he turned his anger away, and didn’t stir up all his wrath.

He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes away, and doesn’t come again.
- 40
How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness, and grieved him in the desert!
- 41
They turned again and tempted God, and provoked the Holy One of Israel.
- 42
They didn’t remember his hand, nor the day when he redeemed them from the adversary;
- 43
how he set his signs in Egypt, his wonders in the field of Zoan,
- 44
he turned their rivers into blood, and their streams, so that they could not drink.
- 45
He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.
- 46
He also gave their increase to the caterpillar, and their labor to the locust.
- 47
He destroyed their vines with hail, their sycamore fig trees with frost.
- 48
He also gave over their livestock to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.
- 49
He threw on them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, indignation, and trouble, and a band of angels of evil.
- 50
He made a path for his anger. He didn’t spare their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence,
- 51
and struck all the firstborn in Egypt, the chief of their strength in the tents of Ham.
- 52
But he led out his own people like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
- 53
He led them safely, so that they weren’t afraid, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
- 54
He brought them to the border of his sanctuary, to this mountain, which his right hand had taken.
- 55
He also drove out the nations before them, allotted them for an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.
- 56
Yet they tempted and rebelled against the Most High God, and didn’t keep his testimonies,
- 57
but turned back, and dealt treacherously like their fathers. They were twisted like a deceitful bow.
- 58
For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their engraved images.
- 59
When God heard this, he was angry, and greatly abhorred Israel,
- 60
so that he abandoned the tent of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men,
- 61
and delivered his strength into captivity, his glory into the adversary’s hand.
- 62
He also gave his people over to the sword, and was angry with his inheritance.
- 63
Fire devoured their young men. Their virgins had no wedding song.
- 64
Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows couldn’t weep.
- 65
Then the Lord awakened as one out of sleep, like a mighty man who shouts by reason of wine.
- 66
He struck his adversaries backward. He put them to a perpetual reproach.
- 67
Moreover he rejected the tent of Joseph, and didn’t choose the tribe of Ephraim,
- 68
But chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion which he loved.
- 69
He built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth which he has established forever.
- 70
He also chose David his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds;
- 71
from following the ewes that have their young, he brought him to be the shepherd of Jacob, his people, and Israel, his inheritance.
- 72
So he was their shepherd according to the integrity of his heart, and guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.
Porquê Efraim, e depois Judá
O salmo abre com os archeiros de Efraim a recuar na batalha (v.9) e encerra explicando a inversão: Deus rejeita a tenda de José e não escolhe Efraim, mas sim Judá e o monte Sião (vv.67-68). As rebeliões recontadas sustentam esse veredicto.
A imagem final responde aos fracassos: um rei pastor. Davi é tomado dos apriscos para apascentar o povo com a integridade do seu coração — a firmeza que faltara às gerações anteriores.
