1 Chronicles 14

A pause from the ark narrative to show David's rising fortunes: Hiram of Tyre sends cedar and craftsmen to build him a palace, David takes more wives and fathers sons in Jerusalem (Solomon among them), and he reads all of it as confirmation that the LORD has established his kingdom. Then the Philistines twice raid the valley of Rephaim. Both times David inquires of God first, and the two answers are deliberately different.

Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David with cedar trees, masons, and carpenters, to build him a house.

David perceived that the LORD had established him king over Israel, for his kingdom was highly exalted, for his people Israel’s sake.

David took more wives in Jerusalem, and David became the father of more sons and daughters.

These are the names of the children whom he had in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,

Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet,

Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia,
7
Elishama, Beeliada, and Eliphelet.

When the Philistines heard that David was anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went out against them.
9
Now the Philistines had come and made a raid in the valley of Rephaim.

David inquired of God, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hand?” The LORD said to him, “Go up; for I will deliver them into your hand.”
11
So they came up to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there. David said, God has broken my enemies by my hand, like waters breaking out. Therefore they called the name of that place Baal Perazim.
12
They left their gods there; and David gave a command, and they were burned with fire.

The Philistines made another raid in the valley.
14
David inquired again of God; and God said to him, “You shall not go up after them. Turn away from them, and come on them opposite the mulberry trees.
15
When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then go out to battle; for God has gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines.”
16
David did as God commanded him; and they attacked the army of the Philistines from Gibeon even to Gezer.
17
The fame of David went out into all lands; and the LORD brought the fear of him on all nations.

Hirão, rei de Tiro, enviou mensageiros a Davi com madeira de cedro, pedreiros e carpinteiros, para construir-lhe uma casa.

Davi percebeu que o SENHOR o havia estabelecido rei sobre Israel, pois o seu reino foi muito exaltado, por amor do seu povo Israel.

Davi tomou mais esposas em Jerusalém, e Davi tornou-se pai de mais filhos e filhas.

Quando os filisteus ouviram que Davi havia sido ungido rei sobre todo o Israel, todos os filisteus subiram em busca de Davi; e Davi ouviu isso, e saiu contra eles.

Davi consultou a Deus, dizendo: “Devo subir contra os filisteus? O Senhor os entregará na minha mão?” O SENHOR lhe disse: “Suba; pois eu os entregarei na sua mão.”

Então eles subiram a Baal-Perazim, e Davi os derrotou ali. Davi disse: “Deus rompeu os meus inimigos por minha mão, como águas que rompem.” Portanto, chamaram o nome daquele lugar de Baal-Perazim.

Eles deixaram seus deuses ali; e Davi deu uma ordem, e eles foram queimados no fogo.

Os filisteus fizeram outra incursão no vale.

Davi consultou novamente a Deus; e Deus lhe disse: “Você não deve subir atrás deles. Desvie-se deles, e venha sobre eles em frente às amoreiras.

Quando você ouvir o som de marcha nas copas das amoreiras, então saia para a batalha; pois Deus saiu à sua frente para ferir o exército dos filisteus.”
16
Davi fez como Deus lhe ordenou; e eles atacaram o exército dos filisteus desde Gibeão até Gezer.
17
A fama de Davi se espalhou por todas as terras; e o SENHOR trouxe o temor dele sobre todas as nações.

Two battles, two instructions

The first time God says go up, and David wins so decisively he names the place Baal Perazim, a breaking-out of waters (v.11); the abandoned Philistine idols are burned. The second time God says not to attack directly but to circle behind the mulberry trees and wait for the sound of marching in their tops.

The point is that David asks each time rather than repeating yesterday's tactic, the exact opposite of the presumption that got Uzza killed a chapter earlier.
