Samuel said to Saul, “The LORD sent me to anoint you to be king over his people, over Israel. Now therefore listen to the voice of the LORD’s words.
- 2
The LORD of Armies says, ‘I remember what Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him on the way when he came up out of Egypt.
- 3
Now go and strike Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and don’t spare them; but kill both man and woman, infant and nursing baby, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’”

Saul summoned the people, and counted them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen and ten thousand men of Judah.

Saul came to the city of Amalek, and set an ambush in the valley.

Saul said to the Kenites, “Go, depart, go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them; for you showed kindness to all the children of Israel when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.

Saul struck the Amalekites, from Havilah as you go to Shur, which is before Egypt.
- 8
He took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.

But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep, of the cattle, of the fat calves, of the lambs, and all that was good, and were not willing to utterly destroy them; but everything that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.

Then the LORD’s word came to Samuel, saying,
- 11
“It grieves me that I have set up Saul to be king, for he has turned back from following me, and has not performed my commandments.” Samuel was angry; and he cried to the LORD all night.

Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning; and Samuel was told, saying, “Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself, turned, passed on, and went down to Gilgal.”

Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said to him, “You are blessed by the LORD! I have performed the commandment of the LORD.”
- 14
Samuel said, “Then what does this bleating of the sheep in my ears and the lowing of the cattle which I hear mean?”
- 15
Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the cattle, to sacrifice to the LORD your God. We have utterly destroyed the rest.”
- 16
Then Samuel said to Saul, “Stay, and I will tell you what the LORD said to me last night.” He said to him, “Say on.”

Samuel said, “Though you were little in your own sight, weren’t you made the head of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king over Israel;
- 18
and the LORD sent you on a journey, and said, ‘Go, and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’
- 19
Why then didn’t you obey the LORD’s voice, but took the plunder, and did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight?”

Saul said to Samuel, “But I have obeyed the LORD’s voice, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

But the people took of the plunder, sheep and cattle, the best of the devoted things, to sacrifice to the LORD your God in Gilgal.”

Samuel said, “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the LORD’s voice? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.

For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim. Because you have rejected the LORD’s word, he has also rejected you from being king.”

Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned; for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.
- 25
Now therefore, please pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD.”
- 26
Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you; for you have rejected the LORD’s word, and the LORD has rejected you from being king over Israel.”
- 27
As Samuel turned around to go away, Saul grabbed the skirt of his robe, and it tore.
- 28
Samuel said to him, “The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today, and has given it to a neighbor of yours who is better than you.
- 29
Also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent; for he is not a man, that he should repent.”
- 30
Then he said, “I have sinned; yet please honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel, and come back with me, that I may worship the LORD your God.”
- 31
So Samuel went back with Saul; and Saul worshiped the LORD.
- 32
Then Samuel said, “Bring Agag the king of the Amalekites here to me!” Agag came to him cheerfully. Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”

Samuel said, “As your sword has made women childless, so your mother will be childless among women!” Then Samuel cut Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal.

Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.

Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death, but Samuel mourned for Saul. The LORD grieved that he had made Saul king over Israel.

Samuel disse a Saul: “Javé me enviou para ungi-lo para ser rei sobre seu povo, sobre Israel”. Agora, portanto, escute a voz das palavras de Iavé.

Yahweh dos Exércitos diz: “Lembro-me do que Amalek fez a Israel, como se pôs contra ele no caminho quando saiu do Egito.

Agora vá e golpeie Amalek, e destrua totalmente tudo o que eles têm, e não os poupe; mas mate tanto o homem quanto a mulher, bebê e lactante, boi e ovelha, camelo e burro””.

Saul convocou o povo, e os contou em Telaim, duzentos mil homens de pé e dez mil homens de Judá.

Saul chegou à cidade de Amalek, e montou uma emboscada no vale.

Saul disse aos quenitas: “Ide, parti, descei do meio dos amalequitas, para que eu não vos destrua com eles; pois vós mostrastes bondade para com todos os filhos de Israel quando eles subiram do Egito”. Assim, os quenitas partiram do meio dos amalequitas.

Saul atingiu os amalequitas, de Havilah enquanto você vai para Shur, que está antes do Egito.

Ele tomou vivo Agag, o rei dos amalequitas, e destruiu completamente todo o povo com o fio da espada.
- 9
Mas Saul e o povo pouparam Agag e o melhor das ovelhas, do gado, dos bezerros gordos, dos cordeiros, e tudo o que era bom, e não estavam dispostos a destruí-los totalmente; mas tudo o que era vil e recusado, que eles destruíram totalmente.

Então a palavra de Javé veio a Samuel, dizendo:

“Entristece-me o fato de eu ter criado Saul para ser rei, pois ele deixou de me seguir, e não cumpriu meus mandamentos”. Samuel ficou furioso; e chorou a Javé a noite toda.

Samuel levantou-se cedo para encontrar-se com Saul pela manhã; e Samuel foi informado, dizendo: “Saul veio ao Carmelo, e eis que ergueu um monumento para si mesmo, virou-se, passou adiante, e desceu a Gilgal”.
- 13
Samuel veio a Saul; e Saul lhe disse: “Você é abençoado por Javé! Eu cumpri o mandamento de Yahweh”.
- 14
Samuel disse: “Então, o que significa este sangramento das ovelhas nos meus ouvidos e o rebaixamento do gado que ouço dizer”?
- 15
Saul disse: “Eles os trouxeram dos amalequitas; pois o povo poupou o melhor das ovelhas e do gado, para sacrificar a Javé seu Deus”. Nós destruímos totalmente o resto”.

Então Samuel disse a Saul: “Fique, e eu lhe direi o que Javé me disse ontem à noite”. Ele disse a ele: “Diga”.

Samuel disse: “Embora você fosse pequeno à sua própria vista, você não foi nomeado chefe das tribos de Israel? Javé te ungiu rei sobre Israel;
- 18
e Javé te enviou numa viagem, e disse: “Vai, e destrói totalmente os pecadores amalequitas, e luta contra eles até que sejam consumidos”.
- 19
Por que então não obedecestes à voz de Iavé, mas levastes o saque, e fizestes o que era mau aos olhos de Iavé”?
- 20
Saul disse a Samuel: “Mas eu obedeci à voz de Javé, e segui o caminho que Javé me enviou, e trouxe Agag, o rei de Amalek, e destruiu totalmente os amalequitas.
- 21
Mas o povo tomou do saque, ovelhas e gado, o melhor das coisas dedicadas, para sacrificar a Javé seu Deus em Gilgal”.
- 22
Samuel disse: “Yahweh tem tanto prazer em ofertas queimadas e sacrifícios, como em obedecer à voz de Yahweh? Eis que obedecer é melhor do que sacrificar, e ouvir do que a gordura dos carneiros.
- 23
Pois a rebelião é como o pecado da bruxaria, e a teimosia é como a idolatria e o teraphim. Porque rejeitaste a palavra de Javé, ele também te rejeitou de ser rei”.

Saul disse a Samuel: “Pequei, pois transgredi o mandamento de Javé e suas palavras, porque temi o povo e obedeci à sua voz.
- 25
Agora, portanto, por favor, perdoem meu pecado, e voltem-se comigo, para que eu possa adorar a Iavé”.
- 26
Samuel disse a Saul: “Não voltarei contigo; pois rejeitaste a palavra de Javé, e Javé te rejeitou de ser rei sobre Israel”.
- 27
Quando Samuel se virou para ir embora, Saul agarrou a saia de seu manto, e ela se rasgou.
- 28
Samuel lhe disse: “Javé arrancou de você hoje o reino de Israel e o deu a um vizinho seu que é melhor do que você”.
- 29
Também a força de Israel não mentirá nem se arrependerá; pois ele não é um homem, para que se arrependa”.
- 30
Então ele disse: “Eu pequei; mas por favor, honre-me agora diante dos anciãos do meu povo e diante de Israel, e volte comigo, para que eu possa adorar a Javé, seu Deus”.
- 31
Então Samuel voltou com Saul; e Saul adorava Yahweh.
- 32
Então Samuel disse: “Traga Agag o rei dos amalequitas aqui para mim”! Agag veio até ele alegremente. Agag disse: “Certamente, a amargura da morte já passou”.
- 33
Samuel disse: “Como sua espada tornou as mulheres sem filhos, assim sua mãe será sem filhos entre as mulheres”! Então Samuel cortou Agag em pedaços antes de Yahweh em Gilgal.

Então Samuel foi para Ramah; e Saul subiu para sua casa em Gibeah de Saul.
- 35
Samuel não veio mais para ver Saul até o dia de sua morte, mas Samuel lamentou por Saul. Iavé lamentou ter feito Saul rei sobre Israel.
