Then David came to Nob to Ahimelech the priest. Ahimelech came to meet David trembling, and said to him, “Why are you alone, and no man with you?”

David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has commanded me to do something, and has said to me, ‘Let no one know anything about the business about which I send you, and what I have commanded you. I have sent the young men to a certain place.’

Now therefore what is under your hand? Please give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or whatever is available.”

The priest answered David, and said, “I have no common bread, but there is holy bread; if only the young men have kept themselves from women.”

David answered the priest, and said to him, “Truly, women have been kept from us as usual these three days. When I came out, the vessels of the young men were holy, though it was only a common journey. How much more then today shall their vessels be holy?”

So the priest gave him holy bread; for there was no bread there but the show bread that was taken from before the LORD, to be replaced with hot bread in the day when it was taken away.

Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the LORD; and his name was Doeg the Edomite, the best of the herdsmen who belonged to Saul.

David said to Ahimelech, “Isn’t there here under your hand spear or sword? For I haven’t brought my sword or my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste.”

The priest said, “Behold, the sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the valley of Elah, is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you would like to take that, take it, for there is no other except that here.” David said, “There is none like that. Give it to me.”

David arose and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.

The servants of Achish said to him, “Isn’t this David the king of the land? Didn’t they sing to one another about him in dances, saying, ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands’?”

David laid up these words in his heart, and was very afraid of Achish the king of Gath.

He changed his behavior before them and pretended to be insane in their hands, and scribbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down on his beard.

Then Achish said to his servants, “Look, you see the man is insane. Why then have you brought him to me?

Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this fellow to play the madman in my presence? Should this fellow come into my house?”

Então Davi foi a Nobe, ao sacerdote Aimeleque. Aimeleque saiu tremendo ao encontro de Davi, e lhe perguntou: “Por que você está sozinho, e não há ninguém com você?”

Davi respondeu ao sacerdote Aimeleque: “O rei me ordenou um assunto, e me disse: ‘Que ninguém saiba de coisa alguma sobre a missão para a qual o envio, nem sobre o que lhe ordenei. Eu mandei os jovens para um determinado lugar.’

Agora, pois, o que você tem à mão? Por favor, dê-me cinco pães em minha mão, ou o que houver disponível.”

O sacerdote respondeu a Davi, dizendo: “Não tenho pão comum à mão, mas há pão sagrado; desde que os jovens tenham se abstido de mulheres.”

Davi respondeu ao sacerdote, dizendo-lhe: “Certamente as mulheres nos foram negadas como de costume nestes três dias. Quando saí, os vasos dos jovens eram santos, embora fosse apenas uma jornada comum. Quanto mais santos estarão os seus vasos no dia de hoje!”

Então o sacerdote lhe deu o pão sagrado; pois não havia outro pão ali senão os pães da proposição que haviam sido tirados de diante do SENHOR, para serem substituídos por pão quente no dia em que foram retirados.

Ora, estava ali naquele dia um dos servos de Saul, retido perante o SENHOR; o seu nome era Doegue, o edomita, o chefe dos pastores que pertenciam a Saul.

Davi perguntou a Aimeleque: “Não tem você aqui à mão uma lança ou uma espada? Pois não trouxe comigo a minha espada nem as minhas armas, porque a missão do rei exigia pressa.”

O sacerdote respondeu: “Eis que a espada de Golias, o filisteu, a quem você matou no vale de Elá, está aqui embrulhada num pano atrás do éfode. Se quiser levá-la, leve-a, pois não há outra aqui além dessa.” Davi disse: “Não há outra igual a ela. Dê-a para mim.”

Davi se levantou e fugiu naquele dia por medo de Saul, e foi para Aquis, rei de Gate.

Os servos de Aquis lhe disseram: “Não é este Davi, o rei da terra? Não era sobre ele que cantavam uns para os outros nas danças, dizendo: ‘Saul matou os seus milhares, e Davi as suas dezenas de milhares’?”

Davi guardou estas palavras no seu coração, e teve muito medo de Aquis, rei de Gate.

Ele mudou o seu comportamento diante deles e fingiu estar louco em suas mãos; rabiscava nas portas da cidade e deixava a saliva escorrer pela barba.

Então Aquis disse aos seus servos: “Vejam, vocês estão vendo que o homem está louco. Por que o trouxeram a mim?
- 15
Por acaso me faltam loucos, para que vocês me tragam este sujeito para fazer loucuras na minha presença? Acaso este sujeito deve entrar na minha casa?”
