Hannah prayed, and said, “My heart exults in the LORD! My horn is exalted in the LORD. My mouth is enlarged over my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation.

There is no one as holy as the LORD, for there is no one besides you, nor is there any rock like our God.

“Don’t keep talking so exceedingly proudly. Don’t let arrogance come out of your mouth, for the LORD is a God of knowledge. By him actions are weighed.

“The bows of the mighty men are broken. Those who stumbled are armed with strength.
- 5
Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread. Those who were hungry are satisfied. Yes, the barren has borne seven. She who has many children languishes.

“The LORD kills and makes alive. He brings down to Sheol and brings up.
- 7
The LORD makes poor and makes rich. He brings low, he also lifts up.
- 8
He raises up the poor out of the dust. He lifts up the needy from the dunghill to make them sit with princes and inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD’s. He has set the world on them.

He will keep the feet of his holy ones, but the wicked will be put to silence in darkness; for no man will prevail by strength.

Those who strive with the LORD shall be broken to pieces. He will thunder against them in the sky. “The LORD will judge the ends of the earth. He will give strength to his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.”

Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. The child served the LORD before Eli the priest.

Now the sons of Eli were wicked men. They didn’t know the LORD.
- 13
The custom of the priests with the people was that when anyone offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant came while the meat was boiling, with a fork of three teeth in his hand;
- 14
and he stabbed it into the pan, or kettle, or cauldron, or pot. The priest took all that the fork brought up for himself. They did this to all the Israelites who came there to Shiloh.

Yes, before they burned the fat, the priest’s servant came, and said to the man who sacrificed, “Give meat to roast for the priest; for he will not accept boiled meat from you, but raw.”

If the man said to him, “Let the fat be burned first, and then take as much as your soul desires;” then he would say, “No, but you shall give it to me now; and if not, I will take it by force.”

The sin of the young men was very great before the LORD; for the men despised the LORD’s offering.

But Samuel ministered before the LORD, being a child, clothed with a linen ephod.
- 19
Moreover his mother made him a little robe, and brought it to him from year to year when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
- 20
Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, “May the LORD give you offspring from this woman for the petition which was asked of the LORD.” Then they went to their own home.

The LORD visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. The child Samuel grew before the LORD.

Now Eli was very old; and he heard all that his sons did to all Israel, and how that they slept with the women who served at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

He said to them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all these people.
- 24
No, my sons; for it is not a good report that I hear! You make the LORD’s people disobey.
- 25
If one man sins against another, God will judge him; but if a man sins against the LORD, who will intercede for him?” Notwithstanding, they didn’t listen to the voice of their father, because the LORD intended to kill them.

The child Samuel grew on, and increased in favor both with the LORD and also with men.

A man of God came to Eli and said to him, “The LORD says, ‘Did I reveal myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt in bondage to Pharaoh’s house?
- 28
Didn’t I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? Didn’t I give to the house of your father all the offerings of the children of Israel made by fire?

Why do you kick at my sacrifice and at my offering, which I have commanded in my habitation, and honor your sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel my people?’

“Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, says, ‘I said indeed that your house and the house of your father should walk before me forever.’ But now the LORD says, ‘Far be it from me; for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me will be cursed.

Behold, the days come that I will cut off your arm and the arm of your father’s house, that there will not be an old man in your house.
- 32
You will see the affliction of my habitation, in all the wealth which I will give Israel. There shall not be an old man in your house forever.
- 33
The man of yours whom I don’t cut off from my altar will consume your eyes and grieve your heart. All the increase of your house will die in the flower of their age.

This will be the sign to you that will come on your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they will both die.

I will raise up a faithful priest for myself who will do according to that which is in my heart and in my mind. I will build him a sure house. He will walk before my anointed forever.

It will happen that everyone who is left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread, and will say, “Please put me into one of the priests’ offices, that I may eat a morsel of bread.”’”

Ana orou e disse: “O meu coração exulta no SENHOR! O meu poder é exaltado no SENHOR. A minha boca se alarga contra os meus inimigos, porque me alegro na tua salvação.

Não há ninguém santo como o SENHOR, pois não há ninguém além de ti; não há Rocha alguma como o nosso Deus.

“Não falem mais com tanta arrogância. Não saia da boca de vocês a altivez, pois o SENHOR é um Deus de conhecimento. Por ele as ações são pesadas.

“Os arcos dos poderosos são quebrados, mas os que tropeçavam são revestidos de força.
- 5
Os que eram fartos se alugam por pão, mas os que tinham fome já não têm. Sim, a estéril deu à luz sete filhos, e a que tinha muitos filhos desfalece.

“O SENHOR mata e preserva a vida; ele faz descer ao Seol e faz subir.
- 7
O SENHOR empobrece e enriquece; ele humilha e também exalta.
- 8
Ele levanta o pobre do pó e ergue o necessitado do monte de cinzas, para fazê-los assentar-se com os príncipes e herdar um trono de glória. Pois as colunas da terra pertencem ao SENHOR, e ele assentou o mundo sobre elas.

Ele guardará os pés dos seus santos, mas os ímpios serão silenciados nas trevas; pois não é pela força que o homem prevalecerá.

Os que contendem com o SENHOR serão despedaçados. Desde os céus ele trovejará contra eles. “O SENHOR julgará os confins da terra. Ele dará força ao seu rei, e exaltará o poder do seu ungido.”

Elcana foi para a sua casa em Ramá. E o menino servia ao SENHOR perante o sacerdote Eli.

Ora, os filhos de Eli eram homens ímpios. Eles não conheciam o SENHOR.

O costume dos sacerdotes para com o povo era que, quando alguém oferecia um sacrifício, o servo do sacerdote vinha enquanto a carne estava cozinhando, com um garfo de três dentes na mão;

e ele o cravava na panela, no caldeirão, no tacho ou no pote. O sacerdote tomava para si tudo o que o garfo tirava. Assim faziam a todos os israelitas que iam a Siló.

Sim, mesmo antes de queimarem a gordura, o servo do sacerdote vinha e dizia ao homem que sacrificava: “Dê carne para assar para o sacerdote; pois ele não aceitará carne cozida de você, mas sim crua.”

Se o homem lhe dissesse: “Queime-se primeiro a gordura, e depois pegue o quanto a sua alma desejar”; então o servo respondia: “Não, você deve me dar agora; caso contrário, tomarei à força.”

O pecado dos jovens era muito grande perante o SENHOR, pois os homens desprezavam a oferta do SENHOR.

Mas Samuel ministrava perante o SENHOR, sendo ainda menino, vestindo um éfode de linho.
- 19
Além disso, a sua mãe lhe fazia uma pequena túnica e a levava para ele de ano em ano, quando subia com o seu marido para oferecer o sacrifício anual.

Eli abençoava Elcana e a sua mulher, dizendo: “Que o SENHOR lhe dê descendência desta mulher, em lugar daquele que foi dedicado ao SENHOR.” Então eles voltavam para a sua casa.

O SENHOR visitou Ana, e ela concebeu e deu à luz três filhos e duas filhas. O menino Samuel crescia perante o SENHOR.

Ora, Eli era muito idoso; e ouvia tudo o que os seus filhos faziam a todo o Israel, e como se deitavam com as mulheres que serviam à porta da Tenda do Encontro.

Ele lhes dizia: “Por que vocês fazem tais coisas? Pois eu ouço de todo este povo sobre os seus atos malignos.
- 24
Não, meus filhos; pois não é bom o relato que escuto! Vocês fazem o povo do SENHOR pecar.
- 25
Se um homem pecar contra outro, Deus o julgará; mas se um homem pecar contra o SENHOR, quem intercederá por ele?” Contudo, eles não deram ouvidos à voz de seu pai, porque o SENHOR tencionava matá-los.

O menino Samuel crescia e aumentava em favor tanto para com o SENHOR como para com os homens.

Um homem de Deus veio a Eli e lhe disse: “Assim diz o SENHOR: ‘Acaso não me revelei claramente à casa de seu pai, quando eles estavam no Egito, sujeitos à casa do faraó?
- 28
Não o escolhi dentre todas as tribos de Israel para ser o meu sacerdote, para subir ao meu altar, para queimar incenso e para vestir um éfode perante mim? Não dei à casa de seu pai todas as ofertas dos filhos de Israel feitas pelo fogo?

Por que vocês pisam nos meus sacrifícios e nas minhas ofertas, que ordenei na minha habitação, e honram os seus filhos mais do que a mim, para se engordarem com o melhor de todas as ofertas de Israel, o meu povo?’

“Portanto, diz o SENHOR, o Deus de Israel: ‘Eu havia dito de fato que a sua casa e a casa de seu pai andariam perante mim para sempre.’ Mas agora o SENHOR diz: ‘Longe de mim tal coisa; pois honrarei os que me honram, e os que me desprezam serão amaldiçoados.

Eis que vêm dias em que cortarei o seu braço e o braço da casa de seu pai, para que não haja nenhum idoso na sua casa.

Você verá a aflição da minha habitação, em meio a toda a prosperidade que darei a Israel. E nunca mais haverá nenhum idoso na sua casa.
- 33
E o único dos seus que eu não eliminar do meu altar será para consumir os seus olhos e entristecer o seu coração. Todos os descendentes da sua casa morrerão na flor da idade.
- 34
E este será o sinal para você, que virá sobre os seus dois filhos, sobre Hofni e Fineias: ambos morrerão no mesmo dia.

Levantarei para mim um sacerdote fiel, que agirá de acordo com o que está no meu coração e na minha mente. Eu lhe edificarei uma casa firme, e ele andará perante o meu ungido para sempre.
- 36
E acontecerá que todo aquele que sobrar da sua casa virá e se prostrará diante dele por uma moeda de prata e um pedaço de pão, e dirá: “Por favor, coloque-me em um dos ofícios sacerdotais, para que eu tenha um pedaço de pão para comer.”’”
