2 Chronicles 13

Rehoboam's son Abijah reigns only three years, but the chronicler gives him one great scene. Facing Jeroboam's army—double his own—he climbs Mount Zemaraim and preaches to the northern troops before the swords cross, arguing the throne belongs to David's line by a "covenant of salt." The battle then inverts: Judah is ambushed front and rear, cries out, the priests blast the trumpets, and the larger army breaks. The sermon, not the numbers, decides it.

In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah began to reign over Judah.

He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Micaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. There was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.

Abijah joined battle with an army of valiant men of war, even four hundred thousand chosen men; and Jeroboam set the battle in array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, who were mighty men of valor.

Abijah stood up on Mount Zemaraim, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, and said, “Hear me, Jeroboam and all Israel:

Ought you not to know that the LORD, the God of Israel, gave the kingdom over Israel to David forever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?
6
Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up, and rebelled against his lord.
7
Worthless men were gathered to him, wicked fellows who strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tender hearted, and could not withstand them.

“Now you intend to withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David. You are a great multitude, and the golden calves which Jeroboam made you for gods are with you.
9
Haven’t you driven out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made priests for yourselves according to the ways of the peoples of other lands? Whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams may be a priest of those who are no gods.

“But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him. We have priests serving the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites in their work.

They burn to the LORD every morning and every evening burnt offerings and sweet incense. They also set the show bread in order on the pure table, and care for the gold lamp stand with its lamps, to burn every evening; for we keep the instruction of the LORD our God, but you have forsaken him.
12
Behold, God is with us at our head, and his priests with the trumpets of alarm to sound an alarm against you. Children of Israel, don’t fight against the LORD, the God of your fathers; for you will not prosper.”
13
But Jeroboam caused an ambush to come about behind them; so they were before Judah, and the ambush was behind them.
14
When Judah looked back, behold, the battle was before and behind them; and they cried to the LORD, and the priests sounded with the trumpets.
15
Then the men of Judah gave a shout. As the men of Judah shouted, God struck Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.
16
The children of Israel fled before Judah, and God delivered them into their hand.
17
Abijah and his people killed them with a great slaughter, so five hundred thousand chosen men of Israel fell down slain.
18
Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied on the LORD, the God of their fathers.
19
Abijah pursued Jeroboam, and took cities from him: Bethel with its villages, Jeshanah with its villages, and Ephron with its villages.
20
Jeroboam didn’t recover strength again in the days of Abijah. The LORD struck him, and he died.
21
But Abijah grew mighty and took for himself fourteen wives, and became the father of twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.

No décimo oitavo ano do rei Jeroboão, Abias começou a reinar sobre Judá.

Ele reinou três anos em Jerusalém. O nome de sua mãe era Micaías, filha de Uriel, de Gibeá. Houve guerra entre Abias e Jeroboão.

Abias entrou na batalha com um exército de valentes guerreiros, quatrocentos mil homens escolhidos; e Jeroboão formou linha de batalha contra ele com oitocentos mil homens escolhidos, que eram guerreiros valentes.

Abias se pôs em pé no monte Zemaraim, que fica na região montanhosa de Efraim, e disse: “Ouçam-me, Jeroboão e todo o Israel:

Vocês não deveriam saber que o SENHOR, o Deus de Israel, deu o reino sobre Israel a Davi para sempre, a ele e a seus filhos, por uma aliança de sal?

Contudo, Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, servo de Salomão, filho de Davi, levantou-se e rebelou-se contra o seu senhor.

Homens imprestáveis se ajuntaram a ele, homens perversos que se fortaleceram contra Roboão, filho de Salomão, quando Roboão era jovem e inexperiente, e não pôde resistir a eles.

“Agora vocês pretendem resistir ao reino do SENHOR, que está nas mãos dos filhos de Davi. Vocês são uma grande multidão, e os bezerros de ouro que Jeroboão fez para serem os seus deuses estão com vocês.

Vocês não expulsaram os sacerdotes do SENHOR, os filhos de Arão, e os levitas, e fizeram sacerdotes para si mesmos, segundo os costumes dos povos de outras terras? Qualquer um que venha consagrar-se com um novilho e sete carneiros pode ser sacerdote daqueles que não são deuses.

“Mas, quanto a nós, o SENHOR é o nosso Deus, e não o abandonamos. Temos sacerdotes servindo ao SENHOR, os filhos de Arão, e os levitas em sua obra.

Eles queimam ao SENHOR, todas as manhãs e todas as tardes, holocaustos e incenso aromático. Eles também colocam em ordem os pães da proposição sobre a mesa pura, e cuidam do candelabro de ouro com as suas lâmpadas, para que queimem todas as tardes; pois nós guardamos a instrução do SENHOR, nosso Deus, mas vocês o abandonaram.

Vejam, Deus está conosco, à nossa frente, e os seus sacerdotes com as trombetas de alarme para tocar o alarme contra vocês. Filhos de Israel, não lutem contra o SENHOR, o Deus de seus pais; pois vocês não prosperarão.”

Mas Jeroboão preparou uma emboscada para atacá-los por trás; de modo que eles estavam em frente a Judá, e a emboscada estava atrás deles.

Quando Judá olhou para trás, eis que a batalha estava na frente e atrás deles; e eles clamaram ao SENHOR, e os sacerdotes tocaram as trombetas.

Então os homens de Judá deram um grito de guerra. Enquanto os homens de Judá gritavam, Deus feriu Jeroboão e todo o Israel diante de Abias e de Judá.

Os filhos de Israel fugiram de diante de Judá, e Deus os entregou em suas mãos.
17
Abias e o seu povo os mataram com grande matança, de modo que quinhentos mil homens escolhidos de Israel caíram mortos.
18
Assim os filhos de Israel foram subjugados naquele tempo, e os filhos de Judá prevaleceram, porque confiaram no SENHOR, o Deus de seus pais.
19
Abias perseguiu Jeroboão, e tomou-lhe cidades: Betel com as suas aldeias, Jesana com as suas aldeias, e Efrom com as suas aldeias.
20
Jeroboão não recuperou mais as forças nos dias de Abias. O SENHOR o feriu, e ele morreu.
21
Mas Abias se fortaleceu, tomou para si catorze esposas, e gerou vinte e dois filhos e dezesseis filhas.

A speech that is really a theology of worship

Abijah's case (vv. 8-12) is not about troop strength but liturgy: Judah keeps the true priesthood, the morning and evening offerings, the showbread, the lampstand, while the North serves "golden calves" and a priesthood anyone can buy with a bull and seven rams. The catastrophic casualty count—500,000 of Israel fall—makes the chronicler's point that reliance on the LORD, not size, wins.
