2 Chronicles 17

Jehoshaphat succeeds Asa and the Chronicler introduces him at his best: he fortifies Judah, refuses the Baals, and the LORD establishes his kingdom with riches and honor. Neighboring kingdoms grow afraid and even Philistines and Arabians bring tribute. The standout act comes early: in his third year he sends princes, Levites, and priests circuit-riding through Judah's towns with "the book of the LORD's law" to teach the people directly.

Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his place, and strengthened himself against Israel.
2
He placed forces in all the fortified cities of Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim, which Asa his father had taken.

The LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and didn’t seek the Baals,
4
but sought the God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not in the ways of Israel.
5
Therefore the LORD established the kingdom in his hand. All Judah brought tribute to Jehoshaphat, and he had riches and honor in abundance.
6
His heart was lifted up in the ways of the LORD. Furthermore, he took away the high places and the Asherah poles out of Judah.
7
Also in the third year of his reign he sent his princes, even Ben Hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah;
8
and with them Levites, even Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tobadonijah, the Levites; and with them Elishama and Jehoram, the priests.

They taught in Judah, having the book of the LORD’s law with them. They went about throughout all the cities of Judah and taught among the people.

The fear of the LORD fell on all the kingdoms of the lands that were around Judah, so that they made no war against Jehoshaphat.

Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents and silver for tribute. The Arabians also brought him flocks: seven thousand seven hundred rams and seven thousand seven hundred male goats.

Jehoshaphat grew great exceedingly; and he built fortresses and store cities in Judah.
13
He had many works in the cities of Judah; and men of war, mighty men of valor, in Jerusalem.
14
This was the numbering of them according to their fathers’ houses: From Judah, the captains of thousands: Adnah the captain, and with him three hundred thousand mighty men of valor;
15
and next to him Jehohanan the captain, and with him two hundred eighty thousand;
16
and next to him Amasiah the son of Zichri, who willingly offered himself to the LORD, and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of valor.
17
From Benjamin: Eliada, a mighty man of valor, and with him two hundred thousand armed with bow and shield;
18
and next to him Jehozabad, and with him one hundred eighty thousand ready and prepared for war.
19
These were those who waited on the king, in addition to those whom the king put in the fortified cities throughout all Judah.

Josafá, seu filho, reinou em seu lugar e fortaleceu-se contra Israel.

Ele colocou tropas em todas as cidades fortificadas de Judá, e estabeleceu guarnições na terra de Judá e nas cidades de Efraim, que Asa, seu pai, havia tomado.

O SENHOR estava com Josafá, porque ele andou nos primeiros caminhos de seu pai Davi, e não buscou os baalins,

mas buscou o Deus de seu pai, e andou em seus mandamentos, e não nos caminhos de Israel.

Portanto, o SENHOR estabeleceu o reino em sua mão. Todo o Judá trouxe tributo a Josafá, e ele teve riquezas e honra em abundância.

Seu coração se animou nos caminhos do SENHOR. Além disso, ele removeu os altos e os postes de Aserá de Judá.

Também no terceiro ano de seu reinado, ele enviou seus príncipes, a saber, Ben-Hail, Obadias, Zacarias, Natanael e Micaías, para ensinarem nas cidades de Judá;

e com eles os levitas, Semaías, Netanias, Zebadias, Asael, Semiramote, Jônatas, Adonias, Tobias e Tobe-Adonias, os levitas; e com eles Elisama e Jeorão, os sacerdotes.

Eles ensinaram em Judá, tendo consigo o livro da lei do SENHOR. Eles percorreram todas as cidades de Judá e ensinaram entre o povo.

O temor do SENHOR caiu sobre todos os reinos das terras que estavam ao redor de Judá, de modo que não fizeram guerra contra Josafá.

Alguns dos filisteus trouxeram presentes a Josafá e prata como tributo. Os árabes também lhe trouxeram rebanhos: sete mil e setecentos carneiros e sete mil e setecentos bodes.

Josafá engrandeceu-se extraordinariamente; e ele construiu fortalezas e cidades-armazéns em Judá.
13
Ele realizou muitas obras nas cidades de Judá; e tinha homens de guerra, guerreiros valentes, em Jerusalém.

Este foi o número deles, segundo as casas de seus pais: De Judá, os capitães de milhares: o capitão Adna, e com ele trezentos mil guerreiros valentes;
15
e ao seu lado o capitão Joanã, e com ele duzentos e oitenta mil;
16
e ao seu lado Amasias, filho de Zicri, que voluntariamente se ofereceu ao SENHOR, e com ele duzentos mil guerreiros valentes.

De Benjamim: Eliada, um guerreiro valente, e com ele duzentos mil homens armados com arco e escudo;
18
e ao seu lado Jeozabade, e com ele cento e oitenta mil prontos e preparados para a guerra.

Estes eram os que serviam ao rei, além daqueles que o rei colocou nas cidades fortificadas por todo o Judá.

A teaching campaign, then a muster roll

Unusually for a king, Jehoshaphat's signature project is education (vv.7-9): named officials carry the law-book town to town. The chapter pairs this with a long military census, counting hundreds of thousands under captains like Adnah and Amasiah.

The order matters. Teaching the law comes before the army lists, suggesting the security described later rests on a people instructed, not merely armed.
