2 Chronicles 22

Ahaziah takes the throne as Judah's last surviving son, and his mother Athaliah, Omri's granddaughter, becomes his counselor "in acting wickedly." He dies alongside the northern king when Jehu carries out judgment on Ahab's house. Then Athaliah moves to wipe out the entire royal offspring of Judah. One act breaks her plan: Jehoshabeath hides the infant Joash in the temple. The Davidic line hangs by a single hidden child for six years.

The inhabitants of Jerusalem made Ahaziah his youngest son king in his place, because the band of men who came with the Arabians to the camp had slain all the oldest. So Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah reigned.

Ahaziah was forty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Athaliah the daughter of Omri.

He also walked in the ways of Ahab’s house, because his mother was his counselor in acting wickedly.

He did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight, as did Ahab’s house, for they were his counselors after the death of his father, to his destruction.

He also followed their counsel, and went with Jehoram the son of Ahab king of Israel to war against Hazael king of Syria at Ramoth Gilead; and the Syrians wounded Joram.

He returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which they had given him at Ramah, when he fought against Hazael king of Syria. Azariah the son of Jehoram, king of Judah, went down to see Jehoram the son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was sick.

Now the destruction of Ahaziah was of God, in that he went to Joram; for when he had come, he went out with Jehoram against Jehu the son of Nimshi, whom the LORD had anointed to cut off Ahab’s house.

When Jehu was executing judgment on Ahab’s house, he found the princes of Judah and the sons of the brothers of Ahaziah serving Ahaziah, and killed them.

He sought Ahaziah, and they caught him (now he was hiding in Samaria), and they brought him to Jehu and killed him; and they buried him, for they said, “He is the son of Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart.” The house of Ahaziah had no power to hold the kingdom.

Now when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal offspring of the house of Judah.

But Jehoshabeath, the king’s daughter, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stealthily rescued him from among the king’s sons who were slain, and put him and his nurse in the bedroom. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of King Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest (for she was the sister of Ahaziah), hid him from Athaliah, so that she didn’t kill him.

He was with them hidden in God’s house six years while Athaliah reigned over the land.

Os habitantes de Jerusalém fizeram de Acazias, seu filho mais novo, rei em seu lugar, porque o bando de homens que veio com os árabes ao acampamento havia matado todos os mais velhos. Assim reinou Acazias, filho de Jeorão, rei de Judá.

Acazias tinha quarenta e dois anos de idade quando começou a reinar, e reinou um ano em Jerusalém. O nome de sua mãe era Atalia, filha de Onri.

Ele também andou nos caminhos da casa de Acabe, porque sua mãe era sua conselheira para agir perversamente.

Ele fez o que era mau aos olhos do SENHOR, assim como a casa de Acabe, pois eles foram seus conselheiros após a morte de seu pai, para a sua destruição.

Ele também seguiu o conselho deles e foi com Jeorão, filho de Acabe, rei de Israel, à guerra contra Hazael, rei da Síria, em Ramote-Gileade; e os sírios feriram Jorão.

Ele voltou para ser curado em Jezreel dos ferimentos que lhe haviam causado em Ramá, quando lutou contra Hazael, rei da Síria. Azarias, filho de Jeorão, rei de Judá, desceu para ver Jeorão, filho de Acabe, em Jezreel, porque ele estava doente.

Ora, a destruição de Acazias veio de Deus, por ter ido a Jorão; pois, quando ele chegou, saiu com Jeorão contra Jeú, filho de Ninsi, a quem o SENHOR havia ungido para exterminar a casa de Acabe.

Quando Jeú estava executando o juízo sobre a casa de Acabe, encontrou os príncipes de Judá e os filhos dos irmãos de Acazias, que serviam a Acazias, e os matou.

Ele procurou Acazias, e o capturaram (pois ele estava se escondendo em Samaria), e o trouxeram a Jeú e o mataram; e o sepultaram, pois disseram: “Ele é filho de Josafá, que buscou o SENHOR de todo o seu coração.” A casa de Acazias não tinha poder para manter o reino.

Ora, quando Atalia, mãe de Acazias, viu que seu filho estava morto, ela se levantou e destruiu toda a descendência real da casa de Judá.

Mas Jeosabeate, a filha do rei, pegou Joás, filho de Acazias, e o resgatou furtivamente do meio dos filhos do rei que estavam sendo mortos, e o colocou com a sua ama no quarto de dormir. Assim Jeosabeate, filha do rei Jeorão, esposa do sacerdote Joiada (pois ela era irmã de Acazias), o escondeu de Atalia, de modo que ela não o matou.

Ele esteve com eles escondido na casa de Deus por seis anos, enquanto Atalia reinava sobre a terra.

Athaliah, the counsel that consumes

The chapter keeps naming the source of the rot: Ahaziah walked in Ahab's ways "because his mother was his counselor," and Ahab's house served as his counselors "to his destruction." Bad advice is treated here as a lethal force, not a minor failing.

When Athaliah destroys the royal line to seize power, she nearly ends the covenant promise of chapter 21. The counter-move is quiet and domestic: a priest's wife smuggling a baby into a bedroom, then God's house itself for six years.
