Acts 11

Peter returns to Jerusalem to face believers who object that he ate with uncircumcised men. He answers not with argument but by retelling the Joppa vision and Cornelius's household receiving the Spirit, until his critics fall silent and bless God for granting repentance to the Gentiles. The scene then shifts north: scattered believers reach Antioch, where Greeks turn to the Lord and Barnabas fetches Saul.

Now the apostles and the brothers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.
2
When Peter had come up to Jerusalem, those who were of the circumcision contended with him,

saying, “You went in to uncircumcised men and ate with them!”

But Peter began, and explained to them in order, saying,
5
“I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision: a certain container descending, like it was a great sheet let down from heaven by four corners. It came as far as me.
6
When I had looked intently at it, I considered, and saw the four-footed animals of the earth, wild animals, creeping things, and birds of the sky.
7
I also heard a voice saying to me, ‘Rise, Peter, kill and eat!’
8
But I said, ‘Not so, Lord, for nothing unholy or unclean has ever entered into my mouth.’
9
But a voice answered me the second time out of heaven, ‘What God has cleansed, don’t you call unclean.’
10
This was done three times, and all were drawn up again into heaven.
11
Behold, immediately three men stood before the house where I was, having been sent from Caesarea to me.
12
The Spirit told me to go with them without discriminating. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered into the man’s house.
13
He told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying to him, ‘Send to Joppa and get Simon, who is called Peter,
14
who will speak to you words by which you will be saved, you and all your house.’
15
As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, even as on us at the beginning.
16
I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John indeed baptized in water, but you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit.’
17
If then God gave to them the same gift as us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I, that I could withstand God?”
18
When they heard these things, they held their peace and glorified God, saying, “Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life!”
19
They therefore who were scattered abroad by the oppression that arose about Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except to Jews only.
20
But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists, preaching the Lord Jesus.
21
The hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord.
22
The report concerning them came to the ears of the assembly which was in Jerusalem. They sent out Barnabas to go as far as Antioch,
23
who, when he had come, and had seen the grace of God, was glad. He exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they should remain near to the Lord.
24
For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith, and many people were added to the Lord.
25
Barnabas went out to Tarsus to look for Saul.
26
When he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they were gathered together with the assembly, and taught many people. The disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.
27
Now in these days, prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.
28
One of them named Agabus stood up and indicated by the Spirit that there should be a great famine all over the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius.
29
As any of the disciples had plenty, each determined to send relief to the brothers who lived in Judea;
30
which they also did, sending it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

Ora, os apóstolos e os irmãos que estavam na Judeia ouviram que os gentios também haviam recebido a palavra de Deus.

Quando Pedro subiu a Jerusalém, os que eram da circuncisão discutiam com ele,

dizendo: “Você entrou na casa de homens incircuncisos e comeu com eles!”

Mas Pedro começou e explicou-lhes em ordem, dizendo:

“Eu estava na cidade de Jope orando, e em um êxtase tive uma visão: um certo recipiente descendo, como se fosse um grande lençol baixado do céu pelas quatro pontas. E ele veio até mim.
6
Quando olhei atentamente para ele, observei e vi os animais quadrúpedes da terra, animais selvagens, répteis e aves do céu.
7
Também ouvi uma voz me dizendo: ‘Levante-se, Pedro, mate e coma!’
8
Mas eu disse: ‘De modo nenhum, Senhor, pois nada profano ou impuro jamais entrou em minha boca.’
9
Mas uma voz me respondeu pela segunda vez do céu: ‘Ao que Deus purificou, não chame você de impuro.’
10
Isso aconteceu três vezes, e tudo foi recolhido novamente ao céu.
11
Eis que, imediatamente, três homens pararam em frente à casa onde eu estava, tendo sido enviados de Cesareia a mim.
12
O Espírito me disse para ir com eles sem fazer distinção. Estes seis irmãos também me acompanharam, e nós entramos na casa do homem.
13
Ele nos contou como tinha visto o anjo em pé em sua casa e dizendo-lhe: ‘Mande a Jope e chame Simão, que é chamado Pedro,
14
que lhe dirá palavras pelas quais você será salvo, você e toda a sua casa.’
15
Quando comecei a falar, o Espírito Santo caiu sobre eles, assim como sobre nós no princípio.
16
Eu me lembrei da palavra do Senhor, como ele disse: ‘João, na verdade, batizou em água, mas vocês serão batizados no Espírito Santo.’
17
Se, pois, Deus lhes deu o mesmo dom que a nós quando cremos no Senhor Jesus Cristo, quem era eu, para que pudesse resistir a Deus?”
18
Quando ouviram essas coisas, eles se calaram e glorificaram a Deus, dizendo: “Então Deus também concedeu aos gentios o arrependimento para a vida!”
19
Aqueles, portanto, que foram dispersos pela opressão que surgiu por causa de Estêvão viajaram até a Fenícia, Chipre e Antioquia, não anunciando a palavra a ninguém, exceto apenas aos judeus.
20
Mas havia alguns deles, homens de Chipre e de Cirene, os quais, quando chegaram a Antioquia, falaram aos helenistas, pregando o Senhor Jesus.
21
A mão do Senhor estava com eles, e um grande número creu e se converteu ao Senhor.
22
A notícia a respeito deles chegou aos ouvidos da igreja que estava em Jerusalém. Eles enviaram Barnabé para ir até Antioquia,
23
o qual, quando chegou e viu a graça de Deus, alegrou-se. Ele exortou a todos que, com propósito de coração, permanecessem perto do Senhor.
24
Pois ele era um homem bom, e cheio do Espírito Santo e de fé, e muita gente foi acrescentada ao Senhor.
25
Barnabé partiu para Tarso à procura de Saulo.
26
Quando o encontrou, ele o levou para Antioquia. Durante um ano inteiro eles se reuniram com a igreja, e ensinaram a muita gente. Em Antioquia, os discípulos foram chamados cristãos pela primeira vez.
27
Naqueles dias, profetas desceram de Jerusalém para Antioquia.
28
Um deles, chamado Ágabo, levantou-se e indicou pelo Espírito que haveria uma grande fome por todo o mundo, o que também aconteceu nos dias de Cláudio.
29
Na medida em que os discípulos tinham em abundância, cada um determinou enviar socorro aos irmãos que moravam na Judeia;
30
o que eles também fizeram, enviando-o aos presbíteros pelas mãos de Barnabé e Saulo.

Antioch becomes the second center

Watch how the chapter pivots from defending one conversion to launching a movement. Barnabas, sent to inspect, instead stays a year teaching, and it is here the disciples are first called 'Christians.' Agabus's prophecy of famine prompts relief money sent back to Judea by Barnabas and Saul, tying the new church to the old.
