Acts 15

Men from Judea insist Gentile converts must be circumcised to be saved, sparking sharp dispute. Paul and Barnabas go up to Jerusalem, where apostles and elders gather. Peter recalls Cornelius; James cites Amos and proposes a verdict: don't burden the Gentiles, only ask abstention from idol pollution, sexual immorality, strangled meat, and blood. A letter carries the decision to Antioch.

Some men came down from Judea and taught the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised after the custom of Moses, you can’t be saved.”

Therefore when Paul and Barnabas had no small discord and discussion with them, they appointed Paul, Barnabas, and some others of them to go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders about this question.

They, being sent on their way by the assembly, passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles. They caused great joy to all the brothers.

When they had come to Jerusalem, they were received by the assembly and the apostles and the elders, and they reported everything that God had done with them.
5
But some of the sect of the Pharisees who believed rose up, saying, “It is necessary to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.”

The apostles and the elders were gathered together to see about this matter.
7
When there had been much discussion, Peter rose up and said to them, “Brothers, you know that a good while ago God made a choice among you that by my mouth the nations should hear the word of the Good News and believe.
8
God, who knows the heart, testified about them, giving them the Holy Spirit, just like he did to us.
9
He made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith.
10
Now therefore why do you tempt God, that you should put a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?
11
But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they are.”
12
All the multitude kept silence, and they listened to Barnabas and Paul reporting what signs and wonders God had done among the nations through them.
13
After they were silent, James answered, “Brothers, listen to me.
14
Simeon has reported how God first visited the nations to take out of them a people for his name.
15
This agrees with the words of the prophets. As it is written,
16
‘After these things I will return. I will again build the tabernacle of David, which has fallen. I will again build its ruins. I will set it up
17
that the rest of men may seek after the Lord: all the Gentiles who are called by my name, says the Lord, who does all these things.’
18
“All of God’s works are known to him from eternity.
19
Therefore my judgment is that we don’t trouble those from among the Gentiles who turn to God,
20
but that we write to them that they abstain from the pollution of idols, from sexual immorality, from what is strangled, and from blood.
21
For Moses from generations of old has in every city those who preach him, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath.”
22
Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole assembly, to choose men out of their company, and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas: Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, chief men among the brothers.
23
They wrote these things by their hand: “The apostles, the elders, and the brothers, to the brothers who are of the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia: greetings.
24
Because we have heard that some who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, ‘You must be circumcised and keep the law,’ to whom we gave no commandment;
25
it seemed good to us, having come to one accord, to choose out men and send them to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,
26
men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
27
We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who themselves will also tell you the same things by word of mouth.
28
For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay no greater burden on you than these necessary things:
29
that you abstain from things sacrificed to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality, from which if you keep yourselves, it will be well with you. Farewell.”
30
So, when they were sent off, they came to Antioch. Having gathered the multitude together, they delivered the letter.
31
When they had read it, they rejoiced over the encouragement.
32
Judas and Silas, also being prophets themselves, encouraged the brothers with many words and strengthened them.
33
After they had spent some time there, they were dismissed in peace from the brothers to the apostles.
35
But Paul and Barnabas stayed in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.
36
After some days Paul said to Barnabas, “Let’s return now and visit our brothers in every city in which we proclaimed the word of the Lord, to see how they are doing.”
37
Barnabas planned to take John, who was called Mark, with them also.
38
But Paul didn’t think that it was a good idea to take with them someone who had withdrawn from them in Pamphylia, and didn’t go with them to do the work.
39
Then the contention grew so sharp that they separated from each other. Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus,
40
but Paul chose Silas and went out, being commended by the brothers to the grace of God.
41
He went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the assemblies.

Alguns homens desceram da Judeia e ensinavam os irmãos: “A menos que vocês sejam circuncidados segundo o costume de Moisés, não podem ser salvos.”

Portanto, quando Paulo e Barnabé tiveram não pequena discórdia e discussão com eles, designaram Paulo, Barnabé e alguns outros deles para subirem a Jerusalém, aos apóstolos e presbíteros, a respeito desta questão.

Eles, sendo encaminhados pela igreja, passaram tanto pela Fenícia quanto por Samaria, declarando a conversão dos gentios. Eles causaram grande alegria a todos os irmãos.

Quando chegaram a Jerusalém, foram recebidos pela igreja, pelos apóstolos e pelos presbíteros, e relataram tudo o que Deus havia feito com eles.

Mas alguns da seita dos fariseus que haviam crido se levantaram, dizendo: “É necessário circuncidá-los e ordenar-lhes que guardem a lei de Moisés.”

Os apóstolos e os presbíteros se reuniram para examinar este assunto.

Havendo muita discussão, Pedro se levantou e lhes disse: “Irmãos, vocês sabem que há muito tempo Deus fez uma escolha entre vocês, para que pela minha boca as nações ouvissem a palavra das Boas Novas e cressem.

Deus, que conhece o coração, testificou a favor deles, dando-lhes o Espírito Santo, assim como fez conosco.
9
Ele não fez distinção alguma entre nós e eles, purificando os seus corações pela fé.
10
Agora, portanto, por que vocês tentam a Deus, colocando um jugo sobre o pescoço dos discípulos que nem nossos pais nem nós fomos capazes de suportar?
11
Mas cremos que somos salvos pela graça do Senhor Jesus, assim como eles.”
12
Toda a multidão ficou em silêncio, e eles ouviam Barnabé e Paulo relatando quais sinais e maravilhas Deus havia feito entre as nações por meio deles.
13
Depois que se calaram, Tiago respondeu: “Irmãos, ouçam-me.
14
Simeão relatou como Deus primeiro visitou as nações para tirar delas um povo para o seu nome.
15
Isso concorda com as palavras dos profetas. Como está escrito:
16
‘Depois destas coisas eu voltarei. Edificarei novamente o tabernáculo de Davi, que está caído. Edificarei novamente as suas ruínas. Eu o levantarei,
17
para que o restante dos homens busque ao Senhor: todos os gentios que são chamados pelo meu nome, diz o Senhor, que faz todas estas coisas.’
18
“Todas as obras de Deus são conhecidas por ele desde a eternidade.
19
Portanto, o meu parecer é que não perturbemos aqueles dentre os gentios que se convertem a Deus,
20
mas que escrevamos a eles para que se abstenham das contaminações dos ídolos, da imoralidade sexual, do que é sufocado e do sangue.
21
Pois Moisés, desde as gerações antigas, tem em cada cidade quem o pregue, sendo lido nas sinagogas todos os sábados.”

Então pareceu bem aos apóstolos e aos presbíteros, com toda a igreja, escolher homens dentre eles e enviá-los a Antioquia com Paulo e Barnabé: Judas, chamado Barsabás, e Silas, homens proeminentes entre os irmãos.

Eles escreveram estas coisas por suas mãos: “Os apóstolos, os presbíteros e os irmãos, aos irmãos dentre os gentios em Antioquia, na Síria e na Cilícia: saudações.
24
Visto que ouvimos que alguns que saíram de nós os perturbaram com palavras, transtornando as suas almas, dizendo: ‘Vocês devem ser circuncidados e guardar a lei’, aos quais não demos nenhum mandamento;
25
pareceu-nos bem, tendo chegado a um acordo, escolher homens e enviá-los a vocês com os nossos amados Barnabé e Paulo,
26
homens que arriscaram suas vidas pelo nome de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo.
27
Portanto, enviamos Judas e Silas, que também lhes dirão as mesmas coisas de viva voz.
28
Pois pareceu bem ao Espírito Santo e a nós não impor a vocês nenhum fardo maior do que estas coisas necessárias:
29
que se abstenham das coisas sacrificadas aos ídolos, do sangue, das coisas sufocadas e da imoralidade sexual; das quais, se vocês se guardarem, farão bem. Passem bem.”
30
Então, quando foram despedidos, desceram para Antioquia. Tendo reunido a multidão, entregaram a carta.

Quando a leram, alegraram-se com o encorajamento.
32
Judas e Silas, sendo eles mesmos também profetas, encorajaram os irmãos com muitas palavras e os fortaleceram.
33
Depois de passarem algum tempo lá, foram despedidos em paz pelos irmãos para os apóstolos.
35
Mas Paulo e Barnabé permaneceram em Antioquia, ensinando e pregando a palavra do Senhor, com muitos outros também.
36
Após alguns dias, Paulo disse a Barnabé: “Voltemos agora e visitemos nossos irmãos em todas as cidades nas quais proclamamos a palavra do Senhor, para ver como eles estão.”
37
Barnabé planejava levar com eles também a João, que era chamado Marcos.
38
Mas Paulo não achava que era uma boa ideia levar com eles alguém que havia se afastado deles na Panfília, e não tinha ido com eles para fazer a obra.
39
Então a contenda tornou-se tão acalorada que eles se separaram um do outro. Barnabé levou Marcos consigo e navegou para Chipre,
40
mas Paulo escolheu Silas e partiu, sendo encomendado pelos irmãos à graça de Deus.
41
Ele passou pela Síria e pela Cilícia, fortalecendo as igrejas.

A council and a parting

The chapter joins a doctrinal milestone to a personal rupture. The Jerusalem letter, 'it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us,' settles the law question. Then Paul and Barnabas clash over taking John Mark, who had withdrawn in Pamphylia; the contention grows so sharp they split, Barnabas sailing to Cyprus with Mark, Paul choosing Silas for Syria and Cilicia.
