Amos 7
The book shifts from oracle to vision. Amos sees three: a locust swarm and a fire, both of which he begs God to stop with the plea "how could Jacob stand? for he is small" — and twice the LORD relents. The third, a plumb line, brings no reprieve: the measure has been taken and Israel is found out of true. Watch the hinge at verse 8, where intercession ends and the verdict "I will not again pass by them" stands.

Thus the Lord GOD showed me: behold, he formed locusts in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and behold, it was the latter growth after the king’s harvest.

When they finished eating the grass of the land, then I said, “Lord GOD, forgive, I beg you! How could Jacob stand? For he is small.”

The LORD relented concerning this. “It shall not be,” says the LORD.

Thus the Lord GOD showed me: behold, the Lord GOD called for judgment by fire; and it dried up the great deep, and would have devoured the land.

Then I said, “Lord GOD, stop, I beg you! How could Jacob stand? For he is small.”

The LORD relented concerning this. “This also shall not be,” says the Lord GOD.

Thus he showed me: behold, the Lord stood beside a wall made by a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand.

The LORD said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said, “Behold, I will set a plumb line in the middle of my people Israel. I will not again pass by them any more.

The high places of Isaac will be desolate, the sanctuaries of Israel will be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.”

Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the middle of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words.

For Amos says, ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of his land.’”

Amaziah also said to Amos, “You seer, go, flee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there,
- 13
but don’t prophesy again any more at Bethel; for it is the king’s sanctuary, and it is a royal house!”

Then Amos answered Amaziah, “I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son, but I was a herdsman, and a farmer of sycamore figs;

and the LORD took me from following the flock, and the LORD said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’

Now therefore listen to the LORD’s word: ‘You say, Don’t prophesy against Israel, and don’t preach against the house of Isaac.’
- 17
Therefore the LORD says: ‘Your wife shall be a prostitute in the city, and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be divided by line; and you yourself shall die in a land that is unclean, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of his land.’”

Quando eles terminaram de comer a erva da terra, então eu disse: “Senhor DEUS, perdoa, eu te peço! Como Jacó poderá subsistir? Pois ele é pequeno.”

O SENHOR arrependeu-se disso. “Isso não acontecerá”, diz o SENHOR.

Assim o Senhor DEUS me mostrou: eis que o Senhor DEUS chamava para um julgamento por fogo; e este secou o grande abismo, e teria devorado a terra.

Então eu disse: “Senhor DEUS, para, eu te peço! Como Jacó poderá subsistir? Pois ele é pequeno.”

O SENHOR arrependeu-se disso. “Isso também não acontecerá”, diz o Senhor DEUS.

Assim ele me mostrou: eis que o Senhor estava junto a um muro construído a prumo, com um prumo em sua mão.

O SENHOR me disse: “Amós, o que você vê?” Eu disse: “Um prumo.” Então o Senhor disse: “Eis que porei um prumo no meio do meu povo Israel. Não passarei mais por eles.

Os altos de Isaque ficarão desolados, os santuários de Israel serão destruídos; e eu me levantarei contra a casa de Jeroboão com a espada.”

Então Amazias, o sacerdote de Betel, mandou dizer a Jeroboão, rei de Israel: “Amós tem conspirado contra você no meio da casa de Israel. A terra não é capaz de suportar todas as suas palavras.

Pois Amós diz: ‘Jeroboão morrerá à espada, e Israel certamente será levado cativo para fora da sua terra.’”

Amazias também disse a Amós: “Ó vidente, vá, fuja para a terra de Judá, e ali coma pão, e profetize ali,
- 13
mas não profetize nunca mais em Betel; pois é o santuário do rei, e é uma casa real!”

Então Amós respondeu a Amazias: “Eu não era profeta, nem era filho de profeta, mas eu era pastor de gado, e cultivador de sicômoros;
- 15
e o SENHOR me tirou de seguir o rebanho, e o SENHOR me disse: ‘Vá, profetize ao meu povo Israel.’
- 16
Agora, portanto, ouça a palavra do SENHOR: ‘Você diz: Não profetize contra Israel, e não pregue contra a casa de Isaque.’
- 17
Portanto, assim diz o SENHOR: ‘Sua mulher será prostituta na cidade, e seus filhos e suas filhas cairão à espada, e a sua terra será dividida a cordel; e você mesmo morrerá em uma terra impura, e Israel certamente será levado cativo para fora da sua terra.’”
The clash at Bethel
The vision sequence is interrupted by a confrontation: Amaziah, priest of Bethel, reports Amos to King Jeroboam and orders the prophet to flee to Judah and eat his bread there (v.12). Amos answers that he was no professional prophet but a herdsman and a tender of sycamore figs, taken from the flock by the LORD himself — then turns Amaziah's expulsion into a personal sentence on the priest's own family.
