Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come, and the years draw near, when you will say, “I have no pleasure in them;”

Before the sun, the light, the moon, and the stars are darkened, and the clouds return after the rain;

in the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those who look out of the windows are darkened,
- 4
and the doors shall be shut in the street; when the sound of the grinding is low, and one shall rise up at the voice of a bird, and all the daughters of music shall be brought low;
- 5
yes, they shall be afraid of heights, and terrors will be on the way; and the almond tree shall blossom, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail; because man goes to his everlasting home, and the mourners go about the streets;

before the silver cord is severed, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher is broken at the spring, or the wheel broken at the cistern,
- 7
and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher. “All is vanity!”
- 9
Further, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge. Yes, he pondered, sought out, and set in order many proverbs.

The Preacher sought to find out acceptable words, and that which was written blamelessly, words of truth.
- 11
The words of the wise are like goads; and like nails well fastened are words from the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.

Furthermore, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

This is the end of the matter. All has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man.

For God will bring every work into judgment, with every hidden thing, whether it is good, or whether it is evil.

Lembre-se também do seu Criador nos dias da sua juventude, antes que venham os maus dias, e se aproximem os anos, em que você dirá: “Não tenho neles prazer”;

Antes que se escureçam o sol, a luz, a lua e as estrelas, e as nuvens voltem depois da chuva;

no dia em que os guardas da casa tremerem, e os homens fortes se curvarem, e as moedoras cessarem por serem poucas, e as que olham pelas janelas se escurecerem,

e as portas da rua se fecharem; quando o som do moinho for baixo, e alguém se levantar ao canto de um pássaro, e todas as filhas da música forem abatidas;

sim, quando tiverem medo das alturas, e houver terrores no caminho; e a amendoeira florescer, e o gafanhoto for um peso, e o desejo falhar; porque o homem se vai para a sua casa eterna, e os pranteadores andam pelas ruas;

antes que o cordão de prata se rompa, ou a taça de ouro se quebre, ou o cântaro se despedace junto à fonte, ou a roda se quebre junto à cisterna,

e o pó volte à terra, como era, e o espírito volte a Deus, que o deu.

“Vaidade de vaidades”, diz o Pregador. “Tudo é vaidade!”
- 9
Além disso, porque o Pregador era sábio, ele ainda ensinou conhecimento ao povo. Sim, ele ponderou, investigou e colocou em ordem muitos provérbios.

O Pregador procurou encontrar palavras agradáveis, e aquilo que foi escrito com retidão, palavras de verdade.
- 11
As palavras dos sábios são como aguilhões; e como pregos bem fixados são as palavras dos mestres das congregações, as quais são dadas por um único pastor.

Além disso, meu filho, seja advertido: de fazer muitos livros não há fim; e muito estudo é cansaço para a carne.
- 13
Este é o fim da questão. Tudo já foi ouvido. Tema a Deus e guarde os seus mandamentos; pois este é todo o dever do homem.
- 14
Porque Deus trará toda obra a julgamento, com toda coisa oculta, seja ela boa ou seja má.
