There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is heavy on men:

a man to whom God gives riches, wealth, and honor, so that he lacks nothing for his soul of all that he desires, yet God gives him no power to eat of it, but an alien eats it. This is vanity, and it is an evil disease.

If a man fathers a hundred children, and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul is not filled with good, and moreover he has no burial, I say that a stillborn child is better than he;

for it comes in vanity, and departs in darkness, and its name is covered with darkness.

Moreover it has not seen the sun nor known it. This has rest rather than the other.

Yes, though he live a thousand years twice told, and yet fails to enjoy good, don’t all go to one place?

All the labor of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.

For what advantage has the wise more than the fool? What has the poor man, that knows how to walk before the living?

Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind.

Whatever has been, its name was given long ago; and it is known what man is; neither can he contend with him who is mightier than he.

For there are many words that create vanity. What does that profit man?

For who knows what is good for man in life, all the days of his vain life which he spends like a shadow? For who can tell a man what will be after him under the sun?

Há um mal que vi debaixo do sol, e que pesa muito sobre os homens:

um homem a quem Deus dá riquezas, bens e honra, de modo que não lhe falta nada para a sua alma de tudo o que ele deseja, contudo Deus não lhe dá poder para comer disso, mas um estranho o come. Isso é vaidade, e é uma doença maligna.

Se um homem gerar cem filhos, e viver muitos anos, de modo que os dias dos seus anos sejam muitos, mas a sua alma não se fartar do bem, e além disso ele não tiver sepultura, eu digo que um natimorto é melhor do que ele;

pois este vem em vaidade, e parte em trevas, e o seu nome é coberto pelas trevas.

Além disso, não viu o sol nem o conheceu. Este tem mais descanso do que o outro.

Sim, ainda que ele viva duas vezes mil anos, e contudo não desfrute do bem, não vão todos para um mesmo lugar?

Todo o trabalho do homem é para a sua boca, e contudo o seu apetite não se satisfaz.

Pois que vantagem tem o sábio sobre o tolo? O que tem o pobre, que sabe como andar diante dos vivos?

Melhor é a vista dos olhos do que a divagação do desejo. Isso também é vaidade e um correr atrás do vento.

O que quer que tenha sido, o seu nome já foi dado há muito tempo; e sabe-se o que o homem é; e ele não pode contender com aquele que é mais forte do que ele.

Pois há muitas palavras que geram vaidade. Que proveito isso traz ao homem?

Pois quem sabe o que é bom para o homem na vida, todos os dias da sua vida de vaidade, os quais ele passa como uma sombra? Pois quem pode dizer ao homem o que será depois dele debaixo do sol?
