Who is like the wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? A man’s wisdom makes his face shine, and the hardness of his face is changed.

I say, “Keep the king’s command!” because of the oath to God.

Don’t be hasty to go out of his presence. Don’t persist in an evil thing, for he does whatever pleases him,
- 4
for the king’s word is supreme. Who can say to him, “What are you doing?”

Whoever keeps the commandment shall not come to harm, and his wise heart will know the time and procedure.
- 6
For there is a time and procedure for every purpose, although the misery of man is heavy on him.
- 7
For he doesn’t know that which will be; for who can tell him how it will be?
- 8
There is no man who has power over the spirit to contain the spirit; neither does he have power over the day of death. There is no discharge in war; neither shall wickedness deliver those who practice it.

All this I have seen, and applied my mind to every work that is done under the sun. There is a time in which one man has power over another to his hurt.

So I saw the wicked buried. Indeed they came also from holiness. They went and were forgotten in the city where they did this. This also is vanity.

Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

Though a sinner commits crimes a hundred times, and lives long, yet surely I know that it will be better with those who fear God, who are reverent before him.

But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he lengthen days like a shadow, because he doesn’t fear God.

There is a vanity which is done on the earth, that there are righteous men to whom it happens according to the work of the wicked. Again, there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the work of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.

Then I commended mirth, because a man has no better thing under the sun than to eat, to drink, and to be joyful: for that will accompany him in his labor all the days of his life which God has given him under the sun.

When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on the earth (even though eyes see no sleep day or night),

then I saw all the work of God, that man can’t find out the work that is done under the sun, because however much a man labors to seek it out, yet he won’t find it. Yes even though a wise man thinks he can comprehend it, he won’t be able to find it.

Quem é como o sábio? E quem sabe a interpretação de uma coisa? A sabedoria de um homem faz o seu rosto brilhar, e a dureza do seu rosto é transformada.

Eu digo: Guarde o mandamento do rei, por causa do juramento a Deus.

Não se apresse em sair da presença dele. Não persista em uma coisa má, pois ele faz tudo o que lhe agrada,

pois a palavra do rei é suprema. Quem pode lhe dizer: “O que você está fazendo?”

Quem guarda o mandamento não sofrerá mal, e o coração sábio conhecerá o tempo e o procedimento.

Pois há um tempo e um procedimento para todo propósito, embora a miséria do homem pese muito sobre ele.

Pois ele não sabe o que há de ser; pois quem pode lhe dizer como será?

Nenhum homem tem poder sobre o espírito para reter o espírito; tampouco tem poder sobre o dia da morte. Não há dispensa na guerra; nem a impiedade livrará aqueles que a praticam.

Tudo isso eu vi, e apliquei minha mente a toda obra que é feita debaixo do sol. Há um tempo em que um homem tem poder sobre outro para o seu mal.

Então eu vi os ímpios serem sepultados. De fato, eles também vieram da santidade. Eles se foram e foram esquecidos na cidade onde fizeram isso. Isso também é vaidade.

Visto que a sentença contra uma obra má não é executada rapidamente, o coração dos filhos dos homens está totalmente determinado a fazer o mal.

Embora um pecador cometa crimes cem vezes, e tenha vida longa, ainda assim eu sei com certeza que será melhor para aqueles que temem a Deus, que são reverentes diante dele.

Mas não irá bem para o ímpio, nem ele prolongará os seus dias como uma sombra, porque ele não teme a Deus.

Há uma vaidade que acontece na terra: que há homens justos a quem as coisas acontecem de acordo com a obra dos ímpios. Novamente, há homens ímpios a quem as coisas acontecem de acordo com a obra dos justos. Eu disse que isso também é vaidade.

Então eu recomendei a alegria, porque o homem não tem coisa melhor debaixo do sol do que comer, beber e se alegrar; pois isso o acompanhará em seu trabalho todos os dias da sua vida que Deus lhe deu debaixo do sol.

Quando apliquei o meu coração para conhecer a sabedoria, e para ver a ocupação que é feita na terra (mesmo que os olhos não vejam sono de dia nem de noite),

então eu vi toda a obra de Deus, que o homem não pode descobrir a obra que é feita debaixo do sol, porque por mais que um homem trabalhe para investigá-la, ainda assim não a encontrará. Sim, mesmo que um homem sábio pense que pode compreendê-la, ele não será capaz de encontrá-la.
