Exodus 17
At Rephidim there is no water, and the quarrel turns dangerous: the people are "almost ready to stone" Moses. God tells him to strike the rock at Horeb with the same staff that struck the Nile, and water flows. Moses names the place Massah and Meribah, testing and quarreling. Then Amalek attacks. Joshua fights below while Moses holds the staff above; Israel prevails only while his hands stay raised, so Aaron and Hur prop them up until sunset.

All the congregation of the children of Israel traveled from the wilderness of Sin, starting according to the LORD’s commandment, and encamped in Rephidim; but there was no water for the people to drink.

Therefore the people quarreled with Moses, and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the LORD?”

The people were thirsty for water there; so the people murmured against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us, our children, and our livestock with thirst?”

Moses cried to the LORD, saying, “What shall I do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.”

The LORD said to Moses, “Walk on before the people, and take the elders of Israel with you, and take the rod in your hand with which you struck the Nile, and go.

Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb. You shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

He called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because the children of Israel quarreled, and because they tested the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD among us, or not?”

Then Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

Moses said to Joshua, “Choose men for us, and go out to fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with God’s rod in my hand.”

So Joshua did as Moses had told him, and fought with Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

When Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed. When he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

But Moses’ hands were heavy; so they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side. His hands were steady until sunset.

Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

The LORD said to Moses, “Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under the sky.”

Moses built an altar, and called its name “The LORD our Banner”.

He said, “The LORD has sworn: ‘The LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.’”

O SENHOR disse a Moisés: “Passe à frente do povo e leve com você os anciãos de Israel; tome em sua mão a vara com a qual você feriu o Nilo, e vá.

Eis que eu estarei diante de você ali sobre a rocha em Horebe. Você ferirá a rocha, e dela sairá água, para que o povo possa beber.” Moisés fez assim à vista dos anciãos de Israel.

Ele chamou o nome do lugar de Massá, e Meribá, porque os filhos de Israel contenderam, e porque puseram o SENHOR à prova, dizendo: “O SENHOR está entre nós, ou não?”

Então Amaleque veio e lutou contra Israel em Refidim.

Moisés disse a Josué: “Escolha homens para nós, e saia para lutar contra Amaleque. Amanhã eu estarei no topo da colina com a vara de Deus em minha mão.”

Então Josué fez como Moisés lhe tinha dito, e lutou contra Amaleque; e Moisés, Arão e Hur subiram ao topo da colina.

Quando Moisés levantava a sua mão, Israel prevalecia. Quando ele abaixava a mão, Amaleque prevalecia.
- 12
Mas as mãos de Moisés ficaram pesadas; então pegaram uma pedra e a colocaram debaixo dele, e ele se assentou nela. Arão e Hur seguraram as suas mãos, um de um lado, e o outro do outro lado. Assim, suas mãos ficaram firmes até o pôr do sol.

Josué derrotou Amaleque e o seu povo ao fio da espada.

O SENHOR disse a Moisés: “Escreva isso para memorial em um livro, e repita-o aos ouvidos de Josué: que eu apagarei totalmente a memória de Amaleque de debaixo do céu.”

Moisés construiu um altar, e chamou o seu nome “O SENHOR é a nossa Bandeira”.

Ele disse: “O SENHOR jurou: ‘O SENHOR fará guerra contra Amaleque de geração em geração.’”
Two crises, one staff
The chapter pairs an internal failure with an external one. First Israel doubts whether God is among them at all; then a hostile nation forces the question of whether God will fight for them. The rod that brought judgment on Egypt now brings water from rock and victory from a hilltop.
The ending looks far ahead: God orders the memory of Amalek blotted out and has Moses write it in a book, while the altar named "The LORD our Banner" marks a war "from generation to generation" that Israel will carry for centuries.
