The LORD spoke to Moses, “Depart, go up from here, you and the people that you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your offspring.’

I will send an angel before you; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

Go to a land flowing with milk and honey; but I will not go up among you, for you are a stiff-necked people, lest I consume you on the way.”

When the people heard this evil news, they mourned; and no one put on his jewelry.
- 5
The LORD had said to Moses, “Tell the children of Israel, ‘You are a stiff-necked people. If I were to go up among you for one moment, I would consume you. Therefore now take off your jewelry from you, that I may know what to do to you.’”

The children of Israel stripped themselves of their jewelry from Mount Horeb onward.

Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far away from the camp, and he called it “The Tent of Meeting.” Everyone who sought the LORD went out to the Tent of Meeting, which was outside the camp.

When Moses went out to the Tent, all the people rose up, and stood, everyone at their tent door, and watched Moses, until he had gone into the Tent.

When Moses entered into the Tent, the pillar of cloud descended, stood at the door of the Tent, and the LORD spoke with Moses.
- 10
All the people saw the pillar of cloud stand at the door of the Tent, and all the people rose up and worshiped, everyone at their tent door.

The LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. He turned again into the camp, but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, didn’t depart from the Tent.

Moses said to the LORD, “Behold, you tell me, ‘Bring up this people;’ and you haven’t let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’

Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me your way, now, that I may know you, so that I may find favor in your sight; and consider that this nation is your people.”

He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
- 15
Moses said to him, “If your presence doesn’t go with me, don’t carry us up from here.
- 16
For how would people know that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Isn’t it that you go with us, so that we are separated, I and your people, from all the people who are on the surface of the earth?”

The LORD said to Moses, “I will do this thing also that you have spoken; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.”
- 18
Moses said, “Please show me your glory.”

He said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim the LORD’s name before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.”

He said, “You cannot see my face, for man may not see me and live.”
- 21
The LORD also said, “Behold, there is a place by me, and you shall stand on the rock.
- 22
It will happen, while my glory passes by, that I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and will cover you with my hand until I have passed by;
- 23
then I will take away my hand, and you will see my back; but my face shall not be seen.”

O SENHOR falou a Moisés: “Parta, suba daqui, você e o povo que você tirou da terra do Egito, para a terra da qual jurei a Abraão, a Isaque e a Jacó, dizendo: 'Eu a darei à sua descendência.'
- 2
Enviarei um anjo adiante de você; e expulsarei o cananeu, o amorreu, o heteu, o perizeu, o heveu e o jebuseu.
- 3
Vá para uma terra que mana leite e mel; mas eu não subirei no meio de vocês, pois vocês são um povo de dura cerviz, para que eu não os consuma no caminho.”

Quando o povo ouviu esta má notícia, eles prantearam; e ninguém colocou suas joias.
- 5
O SENHOR tinha dito a Moisés: “Diga aos filhos de Israel: 'Vocês são um povo de dura cerviz. Se eu subisse no meio de vocês por um só momento, eu os consumiria. Portanto, agora, tirem as suas joias, para que eu saiba o que fazer com vocês.'”

Os filhos de Israel se despojaram de suas joias do monte Horebe em diante.

Ora, Moisés costumava pegar a tenda e armá-la fora do acampamento, bem longe do acampamento, e a chamava de “A Tenda do Encontro”. Todo aquele que buscava o SENHOR saía para a Tenda do Encontro, que ficava fora do acampamento.

Quando Moisés saía para a Tenda, todo o povo se levantava, e ficava em pé, cada um à porta da sua tenda, e acompanhava Moisés com o olhar, até que ele entrasse na Tenda.

Quando Moisés entrava na Tenda, a coluna de nuvem descia, ficava à porta da Tenda, e o SENHOR falava com Moisés.
- 10
Todo o povo via a coluna de nuvem parada à porta da Tenda, e todo o povo se levantava e adorava, cada um à porta da sua tenda.
- 11
O SENHOR falava com Moisés face a face, como um homem fala com seu amigo. Ele voltava ao acampamento, mas o seu servo Josué, filho de Num, um jovem, não se afastava da Tenda.

Moisés disse ao SENHOR: “Eis que o Senhor me diz: 'Faça subir este povo'; e não me deixou saber quem enviará comigo. Contudo, o Senhor disse: 'Eu conheço você pelo nome, e você também encontrou favor aos meus olhos.'
- 13
Agora, pois, se encontrei favor aos seus olhos, por favor, mostre-me o seu caminho, agora, para que eu o conheça, a fim de que eu encontre favor aos seus olhos; e considere que esta nação é o seu povo.”

Ele disse: “A minha presença irá com você, e eu lhe darei descanso.”
- 15
Moisés lhe disse: “Se a sua presença não for comigo, não nos faça subir daqui.
- 16
Pois como se saberá que encontrei favor aos seus olhos, eu e o seu povo? Não é, porventura, pelo fato de o Senhor ir conosco, de modo que sejamos separados, eu e o seu povo, de todos os povos que há sobre a face da terra?”
- 17
O SENHOR disse a Moisés: “Farei também isto que você falou; pois você encontrou favor aos meus olhos, e eu o conheço pelo nome.”

Moisés disse: “Por favor, mostre-me a sua glória.”
- 19
Ele disse: “Farei passar toda a minha bondade diante de você, e proclamarei o nome do SENHOR diante de você. Serei clemente para com quem eu for clemente, e mostrarei misericórdia a quem eu mostrar misericórdia.”

Ele disse: “Você não pode ver a minha face, pois o homem não pode me ver e viver.”
- 21
O SENHOR disse ainda: “Eis que há um lugar junto a mim, e você ficará sobre a rocha.
- 22
Acontecerá que, enquanto a minha glória passar, eu o colocarei numa fenda da rocha, e o cobrirei com a minha mão até que eu tenha passado;
- 23
então tirarei a minha mão, e você verá as minhas costas; mas a minha face não será vista.”
