Genesis 33
The dreaded reunion turns gentle. Jacob arranges his family by rank and bows seven times, but Esau runs to embrace him, and the two brothers weep. Esau at first refuses the gift, then accepts it under pressure, and offers escort and company.

Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau was coming, and with him four hundred men. He divided the children between Leah, Rachel, and the two servants.

He put the servants and their children in front, Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph at the rear.

He himself passed over in front of them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

Esau ran to meet him, embraced him, fell on his neck, kissed him, and they wept.

He lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, “Who are these with you?” He said, “The children whom God has graciously given your servant.”

Then the servants came near with their children, and they bowed themselves.

Leah also and her children came near, and bowed themselves. After them, Joseph came near with Rachel, and they bowed themselves.

Esau said, “What do you mean by all this company which I met?” Jacob said, “To find favor in the sight of my lord.”

Esau said, “I have enough, my brother; let that which you have be yours.”

Jacob said, “Please, no, if I have now found favor in your sight, then receive my present at my hand, because I have seen your face, as one sees the face of God, and you were pleased with me.

Please take the gift that I brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough.” He urged him, and he took it.

Esau said, “Let’s take our journey, and let’s go, and I will go before you.”

Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are tender, and that the flocks and herds with me have their young, and if they overdrive them one day, all the flocks will die.

Please let my lord pass over before his servant, and I will lead on gently, according to the pace of the livestock that are before me and according to the pace of the children, until I come to my lord to Seir.”

Esau said, “Let me now leave with you some of the people who are with me.” He said, “Why? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.”

So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.

Jacob traveled to Succoth, built himself a house, and made shelters for his livestock. Therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.

Jacob came in peace to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan Aram; and encamped before the city.

He bought the parcel of ground where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for one hundred pieces of money.

He erected an altar there, and called it El Elohe Israel.

Jacó levantou os olhos e olhou, e eis que Esaú vinha, e com ele quatrocentos homens. Ele dividiu as crianças entre Lia, Raquel e as duas servas.

Ele mesmo passou à frente deles e prostrou-se em terra sete vezes, até se aproximar de seu irmão.

Esaú correu ao seu encontro, abraçou-o, lançou-se ao seu pescoço, beijou-o, e eles choraram.

Ele levantou os olhos e viu as mulheres e as crianças; e disse: “Quem são estes que estão com você?” Ele disse: “Os filhos que Deus graciosamente deu ao seu servo.”

Então as servas se aproximaram com seus filhos, e se curvaram.

Lia e seus filhos também se aproximaram e se curvaram. Depois deles, José se aproximou com Raquel, e eles se curvaram.

Esaú disse: “O que você pretende com todo esse grupo que encontrei?” Jacó disse: “Encontrar favor aos olhos do meu senhor.”
- 9
Esaú disse: “Eu já tenho o bastante, meu irmão; fique com o que é seu.”
- 10
Jacó disse: “Por favor, não. Se agora encontrei favor aos seus olhos, então receba o meu presente das minhas mãos, porque vi o seu rosto como quem vê o rosto de Deus, e você se agradou de mim.
- 11
Por favor, aceite o presente que eu trouxe a você, porque Deus tem sido gracioso comigo, e porque eu tenho o suficiente.” Ele insistiu, e ele o aceitou.

Esaú disse: “Vamos seguir nossa jornada, e vamos embora, e eu irei adiante de você.”
- 13
Jacó lhe disse: “Meu senhor sabe que as crianças são frágeis, e que as ovelhas e o gado que estão comigo têm suas crias, e se os forçarem demais em um único dia, todos os rebanhos morrerão.
- 14
Por favor, que o meu senhor passe adiante do seu servo, e eu seguirei devagar, no ritmo do gado que está diante de mim e no ritmo das crianças, até que eu chegue ao meu senhor em Seir.”

Esaú disse: “Permita-me deixar com você algumas das pessoas que estão comigo.” Ele disse: “Por quê? Basta que eu encontre favor aos olhos do meu senhor.”

Assim, Esaú retornou naquele dia pelo seu caminho para Seir.
- 17
Jacó viajou para Sucote, construiu uma casa para si, e fez abrigos para o seu gado. Por isso o nome do lugar é chamado Sucote.

Jacó chegou em paz à cidade de Siquém, que fica na terra de Canaã, quando veio de Padã-Arã; e acampou diante da cidade.
- 19
Ele comprou a porção de terra onde havia armado sua tenda, das mãos dos filhos de Hamor, pai de Siquém, por cem peças de prata.
- 20
Ele ergueu ali um altar, e o chamou de El-Elohe-Israel.
Two roads from one meeting
Reconciled, the brothers still part ways. Jacob, pleading the pace of tender children and nursing flocks, declines to follow Esau to Seir and instead heads to Succoth, then buys land near Shechem and builds an altar he names El Elohe Israel. The promised visit to Seir never happens in the text, a polite divergence that keeps Jacob in Canaan.
