Genesis 4
The first family grows and the first murder follows. Cain the farmer and Abel the shepherd both bring offerings; the LORD regards Abel's but not Cain's, and Cain's fallen face hardens into violence in the field. The ground that received Adam's labor now receives a brother's blood. Watch the echoes of chapter 3: a probing question ("Where is Abel?"), an evasion ("Am I my brother's keeper?"), a curse from the ground, and a protective mark. Then the line of Cain runs forward to Lamech.

The man knew Eve his wife. She conceived, and gave birth to Cain, and said, “I have gotten a man with the LORD’s help.”

Again she gave birth, to Cain’s brother Abel. Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

As time passed, Cain brought an offering to the LORD from the fruit of the ground.

Abel also brought some of the firstborn of his flock and of its fat. The LORD respected Abel and his offering,

but he didn’t respect Cain and his offering. Cain was very angry, and the expression on his face fell.

The LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why has the expression of your face fallen?
- 7
If you do well, won’t it be lifted up? If you don’t do well, sin crouches at the door. Its desire is for you, but you are to rule over it.”

Cain said to Abel, his brother, “Let’s go into the field.” While they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel, his brother, and killed him.

The LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel, your brother?” He said, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

The LORD said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries to me from the ground.
- 11
Now you are cursed because of the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
- 12
From now on, when you till the ground, it won’t yield its strength to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth.”

Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.
- 14
Behold, you have driven me out today from the surface of the ground. I will be hidden from your face, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth. Whoever finds me will kill me.”

The LORD said to him, “Therefore whoever slays Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” The LORD appointed a sign for Cain, so that anyone finding him would not strike him.

Cain left the LORD’s presence, and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

Cain knew his wife. She conceived, and gave birth to Enoch. He built a city, and named the city after the name of his son, Enoch.

Irad was born to Enoch. Irad became the father of Mehujael. Mehujael became the father of Methushael. Methushael became the father of Lamech.

Lamech took two wives: the name of the first one was Adah, and the name of the second one was Zillah.

Adah gave birth to Jabal, who was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.
- 21
His brother’s name was Jubal, who was the father of all who handle the harp and pipe.
- 22
Zillah also gave birth to Tubal Cain, the forger of every cutting instrument of bronze and iron. Tubal Cain’s sister was Naamah.

Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice. You wives of Lamech, listen to my speech, for I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for bruising me.

If Cain will be avenged seven times, truly Lamech seventy-seven times.”

Adam knew his wife again. She gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, saying, “for God has given me another child instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.”

A son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to call on the LORD’s name.

O homem conheceu Eva, sua mulher. Ela concebeu, deu à luz Caim, e disse: “Adquiri um homem com a ajuda do SENHOR.”

Depois deu à luz também a Abel, irmão de Caim. Abel era pastor de ovelhas, mas Caim era lavrador da terra.

Passado algum tempo, Caim trouxe do fruto da terra uma oferta ao SENHOR.

Abel, por sua vez, trouxe das primícias do seu rebanho e da gordura deste. O SENHOR se agradou de Abel e de sua oferta,

mas não se agradou de Caim e de sua oferta. Caim ficou muito irado, e o seu semblante caiu.

O SENHOR disse a Caim: “Por que você está irado? Por que o seu semblante caiu?
- 7
Se você fizer o bem, o seu semblante não será levantado? Se você não fizer o bem, o pecado espreita à porta. O desejo dele é contra você, mas você deve dominá-lo.”
- 8
Caim disse a Abel, seu irmão: “Vamos para o campo.” Enquanto estavam no campo, Caim se levantou contra Abel, seu irmão, e o matou.

O SENHOR disse a Caim: “Onde está Abel, seu irmão?” Ele respondeu: “Eu não sei. Sou eu o guardador do meu irmão?”
- 10
O SENHOR disse: “O que você fez? A voz do sangue do seu irmão clama a mim desde a terra.
- 11
Agora você é amaldiçoado pela terra, que abriu a sua boca para receber da sua mão o sangue do seu irmão.
- 12
De agora em diante, quando você cultivar a terra, ela não lhe dará mais a sua força. Você será um fugitivo e um errante pela terra.”

Caim disse ao SENHOR: “Meu castigo é maior do que posso suportar.
- 14
Eis que hoje o Senhor me expulsa da face da terra. Estarei escondido da sua face, e serei um fugitivo e um errante pela terra. Quem me encontrar me matará.”
- 15
O SENHOR lhe disse: “Portanto, quem matar Caim, sofrerá vingança sete vezes.” O SENHOR colocou um sinal em Caim, para que ninguém que o encontrasse o ferisse.

Caim saiu da presença do SENHOR e foi habitar na terra de Node, a leste do Éden.
- 17
Caim conheceu sua mulher. Ela concebeu e deu à luz Enoque. Ele construiu uma cidade e deu à cidade o nome de seu filho, Enoque.

A Enoque nasceu Irade. Irade gerou a Meujael. Meujael gerou a Metusael. Metusael gerou a Lameque.
- 19
Lameque tomou para si duas mulheres: o nome da primeira era Ada, e o nome da segunda era Zilá.
- 20
Ada deu à luz Jabal, que foi o pai dos que habitam em tendas e possuem rebanhos.
- 21
O nome do seu irmão era Jubal, que foi o pai de todos os que tocam harpa e flauta.
- 22
Zilá também deu à luz Tubalcaim, forjador de todo instrumento cortante de bronze e de ferro. A irmã de Tubalcaim era Naamá.

Lameque disse às suas mulheres: “Ada e Zilá, ouçam a minha voz. Vocês, mulheres de Lameque, escutem as minhas palavras, pois matei um homem por me ferir, um jovem por me machucar.

Se Caim será vingado sete vezes, certamente Lameque o será setenta e sete vezes.”

Adão conheceu sua mulher novamente. Ela deu à luz um filho e lhe deu o nome de Sete, dizendo: “Deus me concedeu outro filho no lugar de Abel, pois Caim o matou.”

A Sete também nasceu um filho, a quem deu o nome de Enos. Nessa época, os homens começaram a invocar o nome do SENHOR.
Two lines, two ways of living
Cain's descendants build a city and develop tents, music, and metalwork (v.20-22) - culture advancing - while Lamech boasts of killing a man and claims vengeance "seventy-seven times" (v.24), violence escalating alongside it.
The chapter closes on a different note with Seth, given "instead of Abel," and the birth of Enosh, when "men began to call on the LORD's name" (v.26) - a quiet counter-line to Cain's.
