Isaiah 58
Here the prophet is told to cry aloud "like a trumpet" (v.1) against people who are scrupulously religious yet baffled that God ignores their fasting. The chapter dismantles their assumption: they fast while oppressing workers and quarreling, then wonder at the silence. What follows redefines fasting entirely. The fast God chooses is to loose the bonds of wickedness, feed the hungry, house the homeless poor, and clothe the naked (v.6-7) — worship measured by justice, not by self-denial alone.

“Cry aloud! Don’t spare! Lift up your voice like a trumpet! Declare to my people their disobedience, and to the house of Jacob their sins.

Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways. As a nation that did righteousness, and didn’t forsake the ordinance of their God, they ask of me righteous judgments. They delight to draw near to God.

‘Why have we fasted,’ they say, ‘and you don’t see? Why have we afflicted our soul, and you don’t notice?’ “Behold, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, and oppress all your laborers.

Behold, you fast for strife and contention, and to strike with the fist of wickedness. You don’t fast today so as to make your voice to be heard on high.

Is this the fast that I have chosen? A day for a man to humble his soul? Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under himself? Will you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?

“Isn’t this the fast that I have chosen: to release the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?

Isn’t it to distribute your bread to the hungry, and that you bring the poor who are cast out to your house? When you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you not hide yourself from your own flesh?

Then your light will break out as the morning, and your healing will appear quickly; then your righteousness shall go before you, and the LORD’s glory will be your rear guard.

Then you will call, and the LORD will answer. You will cry for help, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’ “If you take away from among you the yoke, finger pointing, and speaking wickedly;

and if you pour out your soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul, then your light will rise in darkness, and your obscurity will be as the noonday;

and the LORD will guide you continually, satisfy your soul in dry places, and make your bones strong. You will be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water whose waters don’t fail.

Those who will be of you will build the old waste places. You will raise up the foundations of many generations. You will be called Repairer of the Breach, Restorer of Paths with Dwellings.

“If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight, and the holy of the LORD honorable, and honor it, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words,

then you will delight yourself in the LORD, and I will make you to ride on the high places of the earth, and I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father;” for the LORD’s mouth has spoken it.

“Clame em alta voz! Não se contenha! Levante a sua voz como uma trombeta! Declare ao meu povo a sua desobediência, e à casa de Jacó os seus pecados.

Contudo, eles me buscam dia a dia, e têm prazer em conhecer os meus caminhos. Como uma nação que praticou a justiça, e não abandonou a ordenança do seu Deus, eles me pedem juízos justos. Eles têm prazer em se aproximar de Deus.

‘Por que jejuamos’, dizem eles, ‘e o Senhor não vê? Por que afligimos a nossa alma, e o Senhor não percebe?’ “Eis que no dia do seu jejum, vocês buscam o seu próprio prazer, e oprimem todos os seus trabalhadores.

Eis que vocês jejuam para contendas e rixas, e para bater com o punho da maldade. Vocês não jejuam hoje de modo a fazer com que a sua voz seja ouvida no alto.

É este o jejum que escolhi? Um dia para o homem humilhar a sua alma? É para inclinar a cabeça como um junco, e estender pano de saco e cinzas debaixo de si? Você chamará a isso de jejum, e de dia aceitável ao SENHOR?

“Não é este o jejum que escolhi: soltar as correntes da maldade, desatar as correias do jugo, deixar livres os oprimidos, e que vocês quebrem todo jugo?

Não é repartir o seu pão com o faminto, e trazer para a sua casa os pobres desabrigados? Quando você vir o nu, que o cubra; e que não se esconda da sua própria carne?

Então a sua luz romperá como a manhã, e a sua cura surgirá rapidamente; então a sua justiça irá adiante de você, e a glória do SENHOR será a sua retaguarda.

Então você clamará, e o SENHOR responderá. Você gritará por socorro, e ele dirá: ‘Aqui estou.’ “Se você tirar do seu meio o jugo, o apontar do dedo, e o falar maldosamente;

e se você derramar a sua alma para o faminto, e satisfizer a alma aflita, então a sua luz nascerá nas trevas, e a sua escuridão será como o meio-dia;

e o SENHOR o guiará continuamente, satisfará a sua alma em lugares secos, e fortalecerá os seus ossos. Você será como um jardim regado, e como um manancial de águas cujas águas não falham.

Os que procederem de você edificarão as antigas ruínas. Você levantará os fundamentos de muitas gerações. Você será chamado Reparador de Brechas, Restaurador de Veredas para Habitação.

“Se você desviar o seu pé do sábado, de fazer a sua própria vontade no meu santo dia, e chamar o sábado de deleite, e o santo dia do SENHOR de honroso, e o honrar, não seguindo os seus próprios caminhos, nem buscando o seu próprio prazer, nem falando as suas próprias palavras,

então você se deleitará no SENHOR, e eu o farei cavalgar sobre os lugares altos da terra, e o sustentarei com a herança de Jacó, seu pai;” pois a boca do SENHOR o disse.
The Repairer of the Breach
The reward language is vivid and physical. Do justice and "your light will break out as the morning" (v.8); you become "a watered garden" and a spring that never fails (v.11). Right worship is pictured as a body and a land coming back to health.
Then a striking title is given to such a people: "Repairer of the Breach, Restorer of Paths" (v.12). The chapter ends by tying this to the Sabbath — calling it "a delight" rather than a burden — so that social justice and devotion to God are fused into a single act of worship.
