James 1

James greets the twelve tribes scattered abroad, then moves fast through trials, the asking of God for wisdom, the withering of the rich like a grass-flower, and the source of temptation. He insists the deceiver in temptation is our own desire, never God, the unchanging Father of lights. Watch how the chapter closes the loop: hearing without doing is like a man who forgets his own face in a mirror. Religion that counts visits the fatherless and widows and keeps itself unstained.

James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are in the Dispersion: Greetings.

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations,

knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.
4
Let endurance have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
5
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
6
But let him ask in faith, without any doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed.
7
For that man shouldn’t think that he will receive anything from the Lord.
8
He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
9
Let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his high position;
10
and the rich, in that he is made humble, because like the flower in the grass, he will pass away.
11
For the sun arises with the scorching wind and withers the grass; and the flower in it falls, and the beauty of its appearance perishes. So the rich man will also fade away in his pursuits.
12
Blessed is a person who endures temptation, for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord promised to those who love him.
13
Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God can’t be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one.
14
But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed.
15
Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin. The sin, when it is full grown, produces death.
16
Don’t be deceived, my beloved brothers.
17
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation nor turning shadow.
18
Of his own will he gave birth to us by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.
19
So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger;
20
for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God.
21
Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
22
But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves.
23
For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror;
24
for he sees himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.
25
But he who looks into the perfect law of freedom and continues, not being a hearer who forgets but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in what he does.
26
If anyone among you thinks himself to be religious while he doesn’t bridle his tongue, but deceives his heart, this man’s religion is worthless.
27
Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

Considerem motivo de grande alegria, meus irmãos, quando passarem por diversas provações,

sabendo que a provação da sua fé produz perseverança.
4
Deixem que a perseverança tenha a sua obra perfeita, para que vocês sejam perfeitos e completos, não tendo falta de nada.
5
Mas, se algum de vocês tem falta de sabedoria, peça a Deus, que a todos dá liberalmente e sem censura, e lhe será dada.
6
Peça, porém, com fé, sem duvidar de nada, pois aquele que duvida é semelhante à onda do mar, impelida e agitada pelo vento.
7
Pois esse homem não deve pensar que receberá alguma coisa do Senhor.
8
É um homem de mente dividida, inconstante em todos os seus caminhos.
9
O irmão de condição humilde glorie-se na sua alta posição;
10
e o rico, na sua humilhação, porque ele passará como a flor da erva.
11
Pois o sol se levanta com o vento abrasador e seca a erva; a sua flor cai, e a beleza da sua aparência perece. Assim também o rico murchará em seus empreendimentos.
12
Bem-aventurado é aquele que suporta a provação, pois, depois de ser aprovado, receberá a coroa da vida, que o Senhor prometeu aos que o amam.
13
Ninguém, ao ser tentado, diga: “Sou tentado por Deus”; pois Deus não pode ser tentado pelo mal, e ele mesmo a ninguém tenta.
14
Mas cada um é tentado quando é atraído e seduzido pela sua própria cobiça.
15
Então a cobiça, tendo concebido, dá à luz o pecado. E o pecado, quando atinge a maturidade, gera a morte.
16
Não se enganem, meus amados irmãos.
17
Toda boa dádiva e todo dom perfeito vêm do alto, descendo do Pai das luzes, em quem não pode haver variação nem sombra de mudança.
18
Por sua própria vontade, ele nos gerou pela palavra da verdade, para que fôssemos como que as primícias das suas criaturas.
19
Portanto, meus amados irmãos, que todo homem seja pronto para ouvir, tardio para falar e tardio para se irar;
20
pois a ira do homem não produz a justiça de Deus.
21
Portanto, deixando toda impureza e o excesso de maldade, recebam com humildade a palavra implantada, a qual é capaz de salvar as suas almas.
22
Mas sejam praticantes da palavra, e não apenas ouvintes, enganando a si mesmos.
23
Pois, se alguém é ouvinte da palavra e não praticante, é semelhante a um homem que contempla o seu rosto natural num espelho;
24
pois ele vê a si mesmo, vai embora, e logo se esquece de como ele era.
25
Mas aquele que atenta bem para a lei perfeita da liberdade e nela persevera, não sendo um ouvinte que se esquece, mas um praticante da obra, esse será abençoado naquilo que faz.
26
Se alguém entre vocês pensa ser religioso, mas não refreia a sua língua, antes engana o seu próprio coração, a religião desse homem é inútil.
27
A religião pura e imaculada diante do nosso Deus e Pai é esta: visitar os órfãos e as viúvas nas suas aflições, e manter-se incontaminado do mundo.

Asking versus doubting

The request for wisdom (v.5) comes with a sharp condition: ask in faith, not doubting, because the doubter is a wind-driven wave, a double-minded man unstable in all his ways. That instability anchors the whole letter, returning in chapter 4's call to purify the double-minded heart.

Set against the doubter is the giver who gives liberally and without reproach. The contrast frames James's recurring concern: a single, settled inner life that matches its outward acts rather than splitting between them.
