“They say, ‘If a man puts away his wife, and she goes from him, and becomes another man’s, should he return to her again?’ Wouldn’t that land be greatly polluted? But you have played the prostitute with many lovers; yet return again to me,” says the LORD.

“Lift up your eyes to the bare heights, and see! Where have you not been lain with? You have sat waiting for them by the road, as an Arabian in the wilderness. You have polluted the land with your prostitution and with your wickedness.

Therefore the showers have been withheld and there has been no latter rain; yet you have had a prostitute’s forehead and you refused to be ashamed.

Will you not from this time cry to me, ‘My Father, you are the guide of my youth!’?

“‘Will he retain his anger forever? Will he keep it to the end?’ Behold, you have spoken and have done evil things, and have had your way.”

Moreover, the LORD said to me in the days of Josiah the king, “Have you seen that which backsliding Israel has done? She has gone up on every high mountain and under every green tree, and has played the prostitute there.

I said after she had done all these things, ‘She will return to me;’ but she didn’t return, and her treacherous sister Judah saw it.

I saw when, for this very cause, that backsliding Israel had committed adultery, I had put her away and given her a certificate of divorce, yet treacherous Judah, her sister, had no fear, but she also went and played the prostitute.

Because she took her prostitution lightly, the land was polluted, and she committed adultery with stones and with wood.
- 10
Yet for all this her treacherous sister, Judah, has not returned to me with her whole heart, but only in pretense,” says the LORD.

The LORD said to me, “Backsliding Israel has shown herself more righteous than treacherous Judah.
- 12
Go, and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, ‘Return, you backsliding Israel,’ says the LORD; ‘I will not look in anger on you, for I am merciful,’ says the LORD. ‘I will not keep anger forever.

Only acknowledge your iniquity, that you have transgressed against the LORD your God, and have scattered your ways to the strangers under every green tree, and you have not obeyed my voice,’” says the LORD.

“Return, backsliding children,” says the LORD, “for I am a husband to you. I will take one of you from a city, and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion.

I will give you shepherds according to my heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding.
- 16
It will come to pass, when you are multiplied and increased in the land in those days,” says the LORD, “they will no longer say, ‘the ark of the LORD’s covenant!’ It will not come to mind. They won’t remember it. They won’t miss it, nor will another be made.

At that time they will call Jerusalem ‘The LORD’s Throne;’ and all the nations will be gathered to it, to the LORD’s name, to Jerusalem. They will no longer walk after the stubbornness of their evil heart.

In those days the house of Judah will walk with the house of Israel, and they will come together out of the land of the north to the land that I gave for an inheritance to your fathers.

“But I said, ‘How I desire to put you among the children, and give you a pleasant land, a goodly heritage of the armies of the nations!’ and I said, ‘You shall call me “My Father”, and shall not turn away from following me.’
- 20
“Surely as a wife treacherously departs from her husband, so you have dealt treacherously with me, house of Israel,” says the LORD.

A voice is heard on the bare heights, the weeping and the petitions of the children of Israel; because they have perverted their way, they have forgotten the LORD their God.

Return, you backsliding children, and I will heal your backsliding. “Behold, we have come to you; for you are the LORD our God.
- 23
Truly help from the hills, the tumult on the mountains, is in vain. Truly the salvation of Israel is in the LORD our God.
- 24
But the shameful thing has devoured the labor of our fathers from our youth, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.

Let us lie down in our shame, and let our confusion cover us; for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day. We have not obeyed the LORD our God’s voice.”

“Eles dizem: ‘Se um homem repudiar sua mulher, e ela o deixar e se tornar de outro homem, deveria ele voltar para ela novamente?’ Aquela terra não seria grandemente profanada? Mas você se prostituiu com muitos amantes; contudo, volte novamente para mim”, diz o SENHOR.

“Levante os olhos para as colinas desoladas e veja! Onde não se deitaram com você? Você se sentou à beira do caminho esperando por eles, como um árabe no deserto. Você profanou a terra com a sua prostituição e com a sua maldade.

Portanto, as chuvas foram retidas e não houve chuva serôdia; contudo, você tem a fronte de uma prostituta e se recusou a envergonhar-se.

Você não clamará a mim a partir de agora: ‘Meu Pai, você é o guia da minha juventude!’?

“‘Ele reterá a sua ira para sempre? Ele a guardará até o fim?’ Eis que você falou e fez coisas más, e conseguiu o que queria.”

Além disso, o SENHOR me disse nos dias do rei Josias: “Você viu o que a desviada Israel fez? Ela subiu em todo monte alto e debaixo de toda árvore verde, e ali se prostituiu.

Eu disse depois que ela fez todas essas coisas: ‘Ela voltará para mim’; mas ela não voltou, e a sua traidora irmã Judá viu isso.

Eu vi quando, por esta mesma causa, de a desviada Israel ter cometido adultério, eu a repudiei e lhe dei uma carta de divórcio; contudo, a traidora Judá, sua irmã, não teve medo, mas ela também foi e se prostituiu.

Porque ela tratou a sua prostituição com leviandade, a terra foi profanada, e ela cometeu adultério com pedras e com madeira.
- 10
Apesar de tudo isso, a sua traidora irmã, Judá, não voltou para mim de todo o seu coração, mas apenas fingidamente”, diz o SENHOR.

O SENHOR me disse: “A desviada Israel mostrou-se mais justa do que a traidora Judá.
- 12
Vá, e proclame estas palavras para o norte, e diga: ‘Volte, ó desviada Israel’, diz o SENHOR; ‘Não olharei com ira para você, pois eu sou misericordioso’, diz o SENHOR. ‘Não guardarei a ira para sempre.
- 13
Apenas reconheça a sua iniquidade, que você transgrediu contra o SENHOR, seu Deus, e espalhou os seus caminhos aos estranhos debaixo de toda árvore verde, e você não obedeceu à minha voz’”, diz o SENHOR.

“Voltem, filhos desviados”, diz o SENHOR, “pois eu sou marido para vocês. Tomarei um de vocês de uma cidade, e dois de uma família, e os trarei a Sião.
- 15
Darei a vocês pastores segundo o meu coração, que os apascentarão com conhecimento e entendimento.
- 16
Acontecerá que, quando vocês se multiplicarem e crescerem na terra naqueles dias”, diz o SENHOR, “não dirão mais: ‘A arca da aliança do SENHOR!’ Ela não virá à mente. Não se lembrarão dela. Não sentirão a sua falta, nem outra será feita.

Naquele tempo chamarão Jerusalém de ‘O Trono do SENHOR’; e todas as nações se reunirão nela, ao nome do SENHOR, em Jerusalém. Eles não andarão mais segundo a obstinação do seu coração mau.

Naqueles dias a casa de Judá andará com a casa de Israel, e elas virão juntas da terra do norte para a terra que dei por herança aos seus pais.

“Mas eu disse: ‘Como desejo colocar você entre os filhos, e lhe dar uma terra agradável, uma bela herança dos exércitos das nações!’ e eu disse: ‘Você me chamará de “Meu Pai”, e não se desviará de me seguir.’

“Certamente, como uma mulher se afasta traiçoeiramente do seu marido, assim você agiu traiçoeiramente comigo, ó casa de Israel”, diz o SENHOR.

Ouve-se uma voz nas colinas desoladas, o choro e as súplicas dos filhos de Israel; porque perverteram o seu caminho, esqueceram-se do SENHOR, seu Deus.

Voltem, filhos desviados, e eu curarei os seus desvios. “Eis que viemos a você; pois você é o SENHOR, nosso Deus.
- 23
Verdadeiramente a ajuda das colinas, o tumulto nas montanhas, é em vão. Verdadeiramente a salvação de Israel está no SENHOR, nosso Deus.

Mas a vergonha devorou o trabalho de nossos pais desde a nossa juventude, seus rebanhos e seus gados, seus filhos e suas filhas.
- 25
Deitemo-nos em nossa vergonha, e que a nossa confusão nos cubra; pois pecamos contra o SENHOR, nosso Deus, nós e nossos pais, desde a nossa juventude até o dia de hoje. Não obedecemos à voz do SENHOR, nosso Deus.”
