The word that the LORD spoke concerning Babylon, concerning the land of the Chaldeans, by Jeremiah the prophet.

“Declare among the nations and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and don’t conceal; say, ‘Babylon has been taken, Bel is disappointed, Merodach is dismayed! Her images are disappointed. Her idols are dismayed.’

For a nation comes up out of the north against her, which will make her land desolate, and no one will dwell in it. They have fled. They are gone, both man and animal.

“In those days, and in that time,” says the LORD, “the children of Israel will come, they and the children of Judah together; they will go on their way weeping, and will seek the LORD their God.
- 5
They will inquire concerning Zion with their faces turned toward it, saying, ‘Come, and join yourselves to the LORD in an everlasting covenant that will not be forgotten.’
- 6
My people have been lost sheep. Their shepherds have caused them to go astray. They have turned them away on the mountains. They have gone from mountain to hill. They have forgotten their resting place.

All who found them have devoured them. Their adversaries said, ‘We are not guilty, because they have sinned against the LORD, the habitation of righteousness, even the LORD, the hope of their fathers.’

“Flee out of the middle of Babylon! Go out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the male goats before the flocks.
- 9
For, behold, I will stir up and cause to come up against Babylon a company of great nations from the north country; and they will set themselves in array against her. She will be taken from there. Their arrows will be as of an expert mighty man. None of them will return in vain.

Chaldea will be a prey. All who prey on her will be satisfied,” says the LORD.
- 11
“Because you are glad, because you rejoice, O you who plunder my heritage, because you are wanton as a heifer that treads out the grain, and neigh as strong horses,
- 12
your mother will be utterly disappointed. She who bore you will be confounded. Behold, she will be the least of the nations, a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.
- 13
Because of the LORD’s wrath she won’t be inhabited, but she will be wholly desolate. Everyone who goes by Babylon will be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues.

Set yourselves in array against Babylon all around, all you who bend the bow; shoot at her. Spare no arrows, for she has sinned against the LORD.
- 15
Shout against her all around. She has submitted herself. Her bulwarks have fallen. Her walls have been thrown down, for it is the vengeance of the LORD. Take vengeance on her. As she has done, do to her.
- 16
Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him who handles the sickle in the time of harvest. For fear of the oppressing sword, they will each return to their own people, and they will each flee to their own land.

“Israel is a hunted sheep. The lions have driven him away. First, the king of Assyria devoured him, and now at last Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has broken his bones.”

Therefore the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says: “Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I have punished the king of Assyria.

I will bring Israel again to his pasture, and he will feed on Carmel and Bashan. His soul will be satisfied on the hills of Ephraim and in Gilead.

In those days, and in that time,” says the LORD, “the iniquity of Israel will be sought for, and there will be none, also the sins of Judah, and they won’t be found; for I will pardon them whom I leave as a remnant.

“Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod. Kill and utterly destroy after them,” says the LORD, “and do according to all that I have commanded you.

A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction.

How the hammer of the whole earth is cut apart and broken! How Babylon has become a desolation among the nations!

I have laid a snare for you, and you are also taken, Babylon, and you weren’t aware. You are found, and also caught, because you have fought against the LORD.
- 25
The LORD has opened his armory, and has brought out the weapons of his indignation; for the Lord, GOD of Armies, has a work to do in the land of the Chaldeans.
- 26
Come against her from the farthest border. Open her storehouses. Cast her up as heaps. Destroy her utterly. Let nothing of her be left.
- 27
Kill all her bulls. Let them go down to the slaughter. Woe to them! For their day has come, the time of their visitation.
- 28
Listen to those who flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of the LORD our God, the vengeance of his temple.
- 29
“Call together the archers against Babylon, all those who bend the bow. Encamp against her all around. Let none of it escape. Pay her back according to her work. According to all that she has done, do to her; for she has been proud against the LORD, against the Holy One of Israel.
- 30
Therefore her young men will fall in her streets. All her men of war will be brought to silence in that day,” says the LORD.

“Behold, I am against you, you proud one,” says the Lord, GOD of Armies; “for your day has come, the time that I will visit you.
- 32
The proud one will stumble and fall, and no one will raise him up. I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it will devour all who are around him.”
- 33
The LORD of Armies says: “The children of Israel and the children of Judah are oppressed together. All who took them captive hold them fast. They refuse to let them go.
- 34
Their Redeemer is strong. The LORD of Armies is his name. He will thoroughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the earth, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.

“A sword is on the Chaldeans,” says the LORD, “and on the inhabitants of Babylon, on her princes, and on her wise men.
- 36
A sword is on the boasters, and they will become fools. A sword is on her mighty men, and they will be dismayed.
- 37
A sword is on their horses, on their chariots, and on all the mixed people who are in the middle of her; and they will become as women. A sword is on her treasures, and they will be robbed.
- 38
A drought is on her waters, and they will be dried up; for it is a land of engraved images, and they are mad over idols.
- 39
Therefore the wild animals of the desert with the wolves will dwell there. The ostriches will dwell therein. It will be inhabited no more forever, neither will it be lived in from generation to generation.
- 40
As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and its neighbor cities,” says the LORD, “so no man will dwell there, neither will any son of man live therein.
- 41
“Behold, a people comes from the north. A great nation and many kings will be stirred up from the uttermost parts of the earth.
- 42
They take up bow and spear. They are cruel, and have no mercy. Their voice roars like the sea. They ride on horses, everyone set in array, as a man to the battle, against you, daughter of Babylon.
- 43
The king of Babylon has heard the news of them, and his hands become feeble. Anguish has taken hold of him, pains as of a woman in labor.
- 44
Behold, the enemy will come up like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan against the strong habitation; for I will suddenly make them run away from it. Whoever is chosen, I will appoint him over it, for who is like me? Who will appoint me a time? Who is the shepherd who can stand before me?”

Therefore hear the counsel of the LORD that he has taken against Babylon; and his purposes that he has purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely they will drag them away, even the little ones of the flock. Surely he will make their habitation desolate over them.

The earth trembles at the noise of the taking of Babylon. The cry is heard among the nations.

A palavra que o SENHOR falou a respeito da Babilônia, a respeito da terra dos caldeus, por meio do profeta Jeremias.

“Anunciem entre as nações e publiquem, e levantem um estandarte; publiquem, e não ocultem; digam: 'A Babilônia foi tomada, Bel está envergonhado, Merodaque está apavorado! Suas imagens estão envergonhadas. Seus ídolos estão apavorados.'

Pois uma nação sobe do norte contra ela, a qual fará de sua terra uma desolação, e ninguém habitará nela. Eles fugiram. Eles se foram, tanto homens quanto animais.

“Naqueles dias, e naquele tempo”, diz o SENHOR, “os filhos de Israel virão, eles e os filhos de Judá juntos; eles seguirão o seu caminho chorando, e buscarão ao SENHOR, seu Deus.

Eles perguntarão por Sião com os rostos voltados para lá, dizendo: 'Venham, e unam-se ao SENHOR em uma aliança eterna que não será esquecida.'

Meu povo tem sido ovelhas perdidas. Seus pastores os fizeram se desviar. Eles os desviaram nos montes. Eles foram de monte em colina. Eles se esqueceram do seu lugar de descanso.

Todos os que os encontraram os devoraram. Seus adversários disseram: 'Não somos culpados, porque eles pecaram contra o SENHOR, a habitação da justiça, sim, o SENHOR, a esperança de seus pais.'

“Fujam do meio da Babilônia! Saiam da terra dos caldeus, e sejam como os bodes diante dos rebanhos.
- 9
Pois, eis que eu despertarei e farei subir contra a Babilônia uma companhia de grandes nações da terra do norte; e eles se colocarão em ordem de batalha contra ela. De lá ela será tomada. Suas flechas serão como as de um guerreiro perito. Nenhuma delas voltará em vão.
- 10
A Caldeia será uma presa. Todos os que a saquearem serão saciados”, diz o SENHOR.

“Porque vocês se alegram, porque vocês se regozijam, ó vocês que saqueiam a minha herança, porque vocês saltam como uma novilha que debulha o grão, e relincham como cavalos fortes,
- 12
a mãe de vocês ficará totalmente envergonhada. Aquela que os deu à luz será confundida. Eis que ela será a menor das nações, um ermo, uma terra seca e um deserto.

Por causa da ira do SENHOR ela não será habitada, mas ficará totalmente desolada. Todo aquele que passar pela Babilônia ficará espantado, e assobiará por causa de todas as suas pragas.

Coloquem-se em ordem de batalha contra a Babilônia ao redor, todos vocês que armam o arco; atirem contra ela. Não poupem flechas, pois ela pecou contra o SENHOR.

Gritem contra ela ao redor. Ela se rendeu. Suas fortalezas caíram. Suas muralhas foram derrubadas, pois esta é a vingança do SENHOR. Vinguem-se dela. Assim como ela fez, façam com ela.

Eliminem o semeador da Babilônia, e aquele que maneja a foice no tempo da colheita. Por medo da espada opressora, cada um voltará para o seu próprio povo, e cada um fugirá para a sua própria terra.

“Israel é uma ovelha caçada. Os leões o afugentaram. Primeiro, o rei da Assíria o devorou, e agora, por fim, Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia, quebrou os seus ossos.”

Portanto, assim diz o SENHOR dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel: “Eis que punirei o rei da Babilônia e a sua terra, assim como puni o rei da Assíria.
- 19
Trarei Israel de volta ao seu pasto, e ele se alimentará no Carmelo e em Basã. Sua alma se fartará nas colinas de Efraim e em Gileade.
- 20
Naqueles dias, e naquele tempo”, diz o SENHOR, “a iniquidade de Israel será procurada, e não haverá nenhuma, também os pecados de Judá, e eles não serão encontrados; pois eu perdoarei aqueles que eu deixar como remanescente.
- 21
“Subam contra a terra de Merataim, sim, contra ela, e contra os habitantes de Pecode. Matem e destruam-nos totalmente”, diz o SENHOR, “e façam de acordo com tudo o que eu lhes ordenei.

Há um som de batalha na terra, e de grande destruição.
- 23
Como o martelo de toda a terra foi cortado e quebrado! Como a Babilônia se tornou uma desolação entre as nações!
- 24
Eu preparei uma armadilha para você, e você também foi pega, Babilônia, e você não percebeu. Você foi encontrada, e também capturada, porque você lutou contra o SENHOR.
- 25
O SENHOR abriu o seu arsenal, e trouxe para fora as armas da sua indignação; pois o Senhor, DEUS dos Exércitos, tem uma obra a fazer na terra dos caldeus.
- 26
Venham contra ela desde as fronteiras mais distantes. Abram os seus celeiros. Amontoem-na como montes de ruínas. Destruam-na totalmente. Que nada dela seja deixado.
- 27
Matem todos os seus touros. Que eles desçam para o matadouro. Ai deles! Pois o seu dia chegou, o tempo da sua visitação.
- 28
Ouçam aqueles que fogem e escapam da terra da Babilônia, para declarar em Sião a vingança do SENHOR nosso Deus, a vingança do seu templo.
- 29
“Convoquem os arqueiros contra a Babilônia, todos aqueles que armam o arco. Acampem contra ela ao redor. Que ninguém escape. Retribuam a ela de acordo com a sua obra. De acordo com tudo o que ela fez, façam com ela; pois ela tem sido orgulhosa contra o SENHOR, contra o Santo de Israel.

Portanto, os seus jovens cairão nas suas ruas. Todos os seus homens de guerra serão reduzidos ao silêncio naquele dia”, diz o SENHOR.

“Eis que eu sou contra você, ó orgulhosa”, diz o Senhor, DEUS dos Exércitos; “pois o seu dia chegou, o tempo em que eu a visitarei.
- 32
A orgulhosa tropeçará e cairá, e ninguém a levantará. Eu acenderei um fogo nas suas cidades, e ele devorará todos os que estão ao seu redor.”

Assim diz o SENHOR dos Exércitos: “Os filhos de Israel e os filhos de Judá são oprimidos juntos. Todos os que os levaram cativos os seguram firmemente. Eles se recusam a deixá-los ir.
- 34
O Redentor deles é forte. O SENHOR dos Exércitos é o seu nome. Ele defenderá vigorosamente a causa deles, para que possa dar descanso à terra, e perturbar os habitantes da Babilônia.

“Uma espada está sobre os caldeus”, diz o SENHOR, “e sobre os habitantes da Babilônia, sobre os seus príncipes, e sobre os seus sábios.
- 36
Uma espada está sobre os arrogantes, e eles se tornarão tolos. Uma espada está sobre os seus valentes, e eles ficarão apavorados.
- 37
Uma espada está sobre os seus cavalos, sobre os seus carros de guerra, e sobre todo o povo misto que está no meio dela; e eles se tornarão como mulheres. Uma espada está sobre os seus tesouros, e eles serão roubados.

Uma seca está sobre as suas águas, e elas secarão; pois é uma terra de imagens esculpidas, e eles enlouquecem por causa dos ídolos.

Portanto, os animais selvagens do deserto com os lobos habitarão lá. Os avestruzes habitarão nela. Ela não será mais habitada para sempre, nem se viverá nela de geração em geração.
- 40
Assim como quando Deus destruiu Sodoma e Gomorra e as suas cidades vizinhas”, diz o SENHOR, “assim nenhum homem habitará lá, nem qualquer filho do homem viverá nela.

“Eis que um povo vem do norte. Uma grande nação e muitos reis serão despertados dos confins da terra.
- 42
Eles empunham arco e lança. Eles são cruéis, e não têm misericórdia. A voz deles ruge como o mar. Eles montam em cavalos, cada um em ordem de batalha, como um homem para a guerra, contra você, filha da Babilônia.

O rei da Babilônia ouviu as notícias sobre eles, e as suas mãos se tornaram fracas. A angústia tomou conta dele, dores como as de uma mulher em trabalho de parto.

Eis que o inimigo subirá como um leão das matas do Jordão contra a forte habitação; pois eu de repente os farei fugir dela. Quem for escolhido, eu o nomearei sobre ela, pois quem é semelhante a mim? Quem me marcará um tempo? Quem é o pastor que pode ficar de pé diante de mim?”

Portanto, ouçam o conselho do SENHOR que ele tomou contra a Babilônia; e os seus propósitos que ele formou contra a terra dos caldeus: Certamente eles os arrastarão para longe, até mesmo os pequeninos do rebanho. Certamente ele fará com que a habitação deles fique desolada sobre eles.

A terra treme com o estrondo da tomada da Babilônia. O grito é ouvido entre as nações.
